The Johnny Warren Jambaroo Classic - 2009
Those of us who attended the DHBC Centenary Dinner will have heard Mike Tomalaris speaking about his charity ride - the Johnny Warren Jambaroo Classic. Well I thought I'd stick some details up on the forum about this event.
The event is to be held on Sunday, 4th January, 2009. It's 96km from Loftus to Jambaroo, with 3 scheduled stops along the way for coffe and rest. The first part of the route around Waterfall and RNP is well known to lots of us.
The final destination is the Jambaroo pub, which is owned by Johhnie Warren's brother. I stayed in this pub a couple of years ago on a football trip, and the hospitality was sensational despite our less than salubrious behaviour there.
I think we should get a team together, and ride this one as a club like we did for the Gong ride. It's a good way to thank Mike for giving up his time to speak at our function, and if you missed out on a chance to chat to him on the night, perhaps here is your opportunity...
Other confirmed riders are Sean Eadie, and numerous paralympic riders. Stay tuned for more confirmations.
Cost is $35 if you enter before 15th December. Proceeds go to the Sydney Cancer Centre Foundation, affiliated with RPA.
Details here.
Also, if there is interest, we could enquire about staying overnight in the pub, and riding back the next day.
Who's keen?

No commitment yet given the time of the year. But in the past, we have always rode past them before their official start time.A Sunday training ride start at MMs would see us at Loftus for the 7.30am start?
IIRC, many of them ride back to the station post event and catch the train back.
I'll be in if I am in Sydney then. Unable to confirm until late I suspect.

Is it possible to catch a train back?
Train station is ~15km away. On the day there will be a shuttle bus to take riders & bikes to the station if your legs don't have another 15k in them. Plan at this stage is to ride as a group, have lunch as a group, and ride back to the station as a group.

I just booked myself in. I'm happy to fall off the back of the DHBC group & see you at the pub if I can't keep up though. I have to earn that Gong sponsorship money that I never actually rode for somehow, but don't tell the cancer foundation that. Zen fundraising.
I have to work the next day, so wouldn't stay over night.

4 coffee stops! You're kidding! No worries then.
Bill, I had the same problem. You have to type "35.00" in the box at the bottom of the section were you've hit the early bird box (or whatver the total is if you've gone for the jersey too). And don't use the dollar sign, it doesn't like that either!

Pace determined by the slowest rider / coffee drinkerOKAY.. are we riding as a team?? are we staying over night? any places to stay??? - Like to confirm before NYE.
I'm riding back to the train station (15k) and going back.
Stuart or Jo - tried to send a message , but for some reason doesn't seem to want to go thru. Can you call me re: the Johnny Warren Classic discussion - 0417 261 195. Thanks.
UPDATE:
It's not too late to come along.
I've just spoken to the organisers, and...
1) Whilst you can still enter online, if you want to come along, you should confirm your intention on this forum, and I will send an e-mail to the organisers to ensure there is a wristband waiting for you at the start, because I doubt you will get one in the mail before 4th January.
2) If, like me, you had trouble registering, and you don't want to pay $45, we have a special offer where we can still get registration for the old price of $35, right up until the day. Of course, you will be ripping off a charity, but the deal still stands...

MORE RIDE DETAILS:
- - We will be leaving Mick Mazza's at 6.00am on Sunday morning. This will give us an hour to ride to Loftus for the official start, and to get our wristbands, etc.
- If you are going to make your own way to the official Loftus start point, please let us know so we are not hanging around waiting for you.
- If you want to ride, but have not yet officially entered, please either PM me or post your intentions online. I'd like to see at least 20 DHBC riders do this ride. Anyone who has done it before will attest that it is much more fun than the Gong ride, and a great social day out.
- Bring money for lunch, and maybe a beer at the Jambaroo pub.
- You can come home anytime you like, but at this stage the plan is to ride the 15km from Jambaroo to the closest railway station for the 2.00pm train back to Central.
- No plans have been made for anyone to stay at the hotel, but the option is still open for anyone to make their own arrangements. If you want to stay at the hotel, it's only $65 for a double room. They also have self contained double motel suites for $120.
Just entered and paid online. My partner, Tracy is driving me to the Loftus start..sorry, not as keen as some of you... and then continuing on to Jamberoo to drive me home. Because we have a van, I can offer up to 2 others (and their bikes) a lift to the start and a return trip from Jamberoo. Will be leaving my place in Dulwich Hill at ~6.30am. Email me on this forum if interested.
I've received wrist band via mail - its bright tangerine and will match my bike colour well. Lucky aye; as I wouldn't ride if the colours didn't match !
I will ride and take train back as looking to get some kms into legs...6am @ MMs

What's the start time up at Loftus
http://www.johnnywarrenjamberooclassic. ... home.html#
7.30am from Loftus (I think thats Sutherland park?) as I understand it

Start is from Waratah Park (not sure if that is also known as Sutherland Park).
The starting park is just 500m from Sutherland station.
I'm guessing that the event will have approx. 300 riders participating. It's not like the Gong ride, where 10,000 people ride. There will be a support van in front of the first rider, and a broom wagon behind the last rider, as well as a mechanic's vehicle. In that respect, everone will be riding as a group. Within that bunch, we can all ride as a club.
Anyway, it will be easy to spot the bunch of red jerseys at the park. If people want to meet up at the station, that's fine too, but if there's no-one at the station, I'd suggest heading over to the start line, where there will certainly be lots of red before the 7.30 roll out.

What's the chance that the DHBC bunch will stay as one?
What's the ETA at Jambaroo? And what's the likely time we can get back to Sydney by train? I am still undecided. Hard to justify a solo escape from the family for a whole day.
Speaking to Toff - he seems to think we won't get to Jamberoo until around lunchtime and it won't be until late afternoon bfeore the train will get you back into Sydney.
Thanks.
It was great to see so many fron DHBC out for the ride.
We were at Jamberoo by 12 after a great ride. This was Marian's longest ever ride so she was pretty pleased that she made the distance without fading too much.
After a couple of beers at Jamberoo we rode over a couple of nice hills to Kiama for a three course lunch at our friends house. Then we caught the train back to Wolli Creek and cycled to my sisters house in Earlwood just in time for another three course meal.
I think we managed to replace most of the carbs used for the day!

It wasn't the 3 nights of track racing backed up by the 121k to Jambaroo that got me, it was the 9k back to the train station
Jambaroo Fun Park (JFP) uses the downhill gravity factor of the the rolling hills to Albion Park railway station to power it's water rides - and due to same, (and some emiprical data via speed cameras), the water rides at JFP are regarded as the fastest in the sthern hemisphereit was the 9k back to the train station
I passed only a couple of the DHBC team on the rolling hills back to Albion Park rail - without hesitation each one swore @#%$ gusty Nor easter ^_*&%+ Kiama LOL
Mike wrote it was the 9k back to the station.
Nobody told me it was a hill climbing course otherwise I would have gone to Kiama instead.
Amy was battered and bruised at the top of the last hill.
Lindsay got her back on the bike and gave her a helpful push down the next hill. She was flying then

How did that last 9km compare with RNP hills?
its hard to say, after a coffee, 2 schooners, a 600 ml lift and x 3How did that last 9km compare with RNP hills?
sausage sandwichs from the Lions Club - - I'd say longer. but not as steep as say Audley in. The clincher was the strong nor easter using ur chest as a sail for hobart
... now known as the the "Albion 9"

Sorry Amy, I didn't realise that you were in a spot of bother going up that hill. If I'd known, I would of slowed down and acted as a wind shield.
Just for fun i put both routes into mapmyride and I'm very glad MariAn and I went to Kiama.
2 climbs on the way to kiama, the first is 1.5km and the next is only half a km. The second one does have a section of nearly 20%. toatal climbed is about 70m
The albion Park route however climbs nearly 150m over a distance of 3 km with a few sections of 10%.
Oh and we didn't have a headwind either!
what doesn't kill you makes you stronger?
