BHP Appin 400
Entires will open this Sunday for the BHP Appin 400, which is held on 15th August at Appin and put on by the Wannaride crew.
I'm pretty keen on racing solo. I was thinking about doing a 4 hr as my first but I think doing 400 minutes (of 6hr 40mins) is plausible with a bit of extra training between now and then.

Thanks for all your hard work timekeeping Rob (and for the personalised commentary on my trips through the transition area). Results are up over here
It was a fantastic course. Going by Christian's time, my first lap puncture cost me 10 minutes. Two DHBC riders in the top 10 (three in the top 11) is good going. I think a top 10 finish in the triples at the Scott is looking pretty good. GO the DHBC Triple Ds!!!
It was a really enjoyable course and I had fun from start to finish.
I am actually really happy that I managed to ride the whole time, considering I spent the whole of the first lap expecting that I would be packing it in once I got back to transition. I managed to miss the start of the race which wasn't so bad as up the back I had the track to myself. I decided to take it real easy and keep the effort low for the first loop, but my body had other ideas. My heart block decided it was time to make an appearance (which seems to happen every 3 months or so, always at the worst times) and my heart rate jumped up to over 200bpm when I was cruising. Kind of hurts when your max is 191. I was in the granny ring and walking a lot to try and get it down, as the chest pain was pretty unpleasant. A bit worried for my poor little ticker I decided I wouldn't continue if it kept that up, but luckily after a good rest at transition after lap one it died down but I was still feelin pretty shagged from the experience.
After that the laps just got better and better. I think there was some kind of entertaining event on each one, like literally scraping past a twig on lap two and it ripping a hole in my knee (the penny farthing crash scar that has never really healed properly) and having to take a phone call from work to resolve some IT problems track side on lap three. Each lap where I couldn't (or decided not to) tackle a drop or a step up, I decided that I would try on the next one and I got close to riding a lot of it by the last lap.
I felt pretty good by the end of it, and would have loved for it to go longer. I had set myself a goal of 8 laps before the race but given how technical the course was I am happy with the 6 I managed to get in. Everyone was really encouraging, particularly the other solo female and male riders. I only got cut off by someone once but I was also very accomodating to people wanting to pass and got out of the way before they even asked in most cases. I was pretty happy that I managed to not crash for the whole thing, that's got to be a first for me.
My bike is ridiculously awesome, I just can't wait to ride it again. When we did Manly Dam on Saturday it felt a little strange, but I think by lap 3 yesterday I was really into it and by lap 6 I just didn't want to get off!
Here's my Garmin data for the race if anyone is interested. The distance is a bit off because I was running off GPS, it was actually more like 60km. Notice the less than favourable heart rate from the 15min to 1hr mark.

I found out that I don't eat enough when I'm riding, thus my first three laps are good, then I slowed down a bit. I was aiming for 10 laps, and I actually could have done 10 as I got back with 6 minutes to spare. I decided against it, and it was a good decision. Even if I did go back out I would have still finished in the same place. Anthony passed me on the first lap, and I don't know where this happened, then later in the race I passed him, not sure where this happened either.
I only came off once, and there was one hill I just couldn't get up. It wasn't even that difficult but others I spoke too had the same problem. The A lines on this course were fantastic if not almost vertical for two of them.
I definitely be doing some more racing on this course. There is a club race next month.

Appin is a hard track to eat and drink on, there's only really a couple of places where you have the chance to and they are both pretty short.
For some last minute training before the Scott 24hr there is the Singletrack Mind Race 8 hour at Appin on the 25th September . http://www.chocolatefoot.com.au/singlet ... nformation . You'll get to test your lights out too.
