For the newbies, this says you should have MTB experience. http://www.trailflix.com.au/tfx_new/tra ... =trailinfo Does riding one to the shops count?
meh. The fire trail is easy. And if you find the single track too challenging (and its not), you can choose to ride on the road I suppose. And I don't even own a mountain bike. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun morning out.

I am in and wrapt its now 7am start. The Oaks is a favourite, especially the fast downhill and single track at the end. There is a bit of technical stuff which you may need to walk down if you've never mountain biked before, but that's fine. Sometimes a little water crossing at the end - a potential finish with a swim in the river at the bottom on a hot day before the rather hideous climb back out to the station.

Not in. No MTB. Just commenting on the (lack of) difficulty from a non MTBikers perspective. Ive done the oaks a fair few times (I lived in the mountains for a bit). Its lots of fun. But I much prefer road riding (bizzarley). Even tho i love bushwalking, canyoning, camping and am still partial to the odd trail run. I'd be tempted to borrow a MTB if you we're going from wenty. Not that I'm suggesting that. Oaks is suitable for any roadie on a MTB. I don't think Anderson's is.

To answer Stuarts question, I expect the ride to be about 2 hours from the head of the track. The track starts about 5 minutes from the train station. Depending on if you train it up or drive will determine what time you get back to Sydney.

I think it is possible to ride the Oaks on a CX bike. This is assuming you have actual off road tyres and not 35mm slicks.

Well they're 35mm knobby CX tyres. A MTB guy at work thinks it's possible too so I guess I'll give it a go, worst case I'm a little slow through the single-track section.

Anyone thinking about it should just go.Am pretty sure you don't need a fancy bike. I know people who have done it on bmx and kmart bikes. Riding a slighty unsuitable bike will just make you a bit slower and slightly more prone to flats and non-serious crashing :) but it's only 25km so how else would you fill
in the time???
p.s i have a slighty unsuitable bike someone (brave)can borrow

Great ride was had by all - complete with river crossings and soggy feet! Andersons was excellent fun - fab descents but ugly climbs out. I had to bail after that to get back but the enduro people (Alison and now mountain biker Mike) pushed on for the Oaks too. Where are the rest of the DHBC Mountain BIkers??!!

Introducing the 2013 DHBC Non Fixie Imperial Century (that's 160k for the metric folks.

This year we have 3 challenges for you;

Sat 13th April - The 2013 DHBC Non Fixie Imperial Century Prologue
Image
Nah, its not that fast, a social ride from Marrickville to Kiama. Coffee shops are mandatory on route. If you can't make Sunday but you can make Saturday or you feel that Sunday is too much for you, then your still welcome on the prologue, you catch the train back.

Accommodation at Grand Hotel. I've contacted them and they have secure parking for our bikes.

2. Dagfest Saturday night!!!!!
Image
Your mission on Saturday night is to be the worst dressed and cos Sunday is an unsupported ride, what you wear is gunna be binned prior, so here's your chance to get rid of that shirt that the mother in law gave you for christmas...

3. the 2013 DHBC Non Fixie Imperial Century (160k)
Image
Nah its not a race, but it is a challenge and your gunna look great in red. Must ride a geared bike, its a tradition
Route;
1. Kiama to Robinson Pie Shop, via Jambroo
Brunch in the pie shop
2. Robinson Pie Shop to Kangaroo valley
Late lunch
3. Kangaroo valley to Berry (1st bailout option)
4. Berry to Gerroa using costal route
5. Gerroa to Kiama (those who drove can bail here)
6. Kiama to Wollongong using costal route. We can use bike paths if getting on. Sunset is 5.32pm.
Train home

Stages 1 & 3 are the challenge sections. To do these you need reasonable fitness having completed 3 rides to Waterfall in C28 or equivalent.

There are start time options that we need to discuss, but first let me know what your interested in, so add your name to the following list and give me comments

Proglogue;
Mike (drinks coffee)

Dagfest;
Mike (doesn't own a Hawaiian shirt)

Non Fixie Century;
Mike

I'd be interested in doing the Non Fixie Century, just to do a longer ride and have a change of scenery. I'm not sure I know anyone here though. I do ride every week with the middies to Waterfall. Would the pace be more C28 though for this?

Re: Adventure Ride - Non Fixie Imperial Century - April

Pace will be at that of the slowest rider. The hills give the faster riders there personal challenge, regrouping at the top.

Well it doesn't seem this one is a goer. There is the possibility to catch a train to the start and avoid the overnight stay if that's the issue.

Those who would of come on a century but didn't go for this one. let me know the reason (school holidays, no overnight, too hilly whatever) and I'll take that into account for a replan.

Perhaps we should do the Bundena Ferry ride instead?

I love a big ride, but overnights the kicker for me. A very expensive leave pass it is, only purchased for events. A whole day leave pass is itself a big purchase.

I've cancelled the Non Fixie Century. The format wasn't popular. There's some timeslots later in the year if people are interested in still doing one, we can revert to the normal format of starting it at Marrickville.

Mark is hosting an interesting route for next month, Marrickville to Springwood via a road thru the blue mountains that few of us have ever been on. Watch this space for more details. The route is detailed in the second post in this thread.

Hi All,

The next Adventure Ride goes west to Springwood via Windsor.

I did this ride in 2010 with Stanmore Cycles and it's a nice ride and change of scenery. The route is in the second post of this thread. It is undulating to Seven Hills (ok, maybe short hills) and then flat to Windsor where we'll stop for coffee/ morning tea. Most of this section is on multi-lane roads.

We then head to Springwood Road for the climb up to our lunch destination, regrouping at the lookout part-way up the climb.
Lunch will be at the Orient Hotel Bistro and they have vegetarian meals.

The train station is down the road and trains run hourly, 6 mins past the hour, stopping at Strathfield and Central. There's currently no trackwork planned.

I'll book a table when we get an idea of numbers and I'm thinking inside as it could be cool. If it's forecast to be warm I could try to move us to an outdoor table.

Who's in?

Phillip, Keith,

Perhaps, maybe, possibly I could be tempted to ride back.

Cracking weather further up the mountain today. Cold in the shade and when the wind picks up, however it's pretty spectacular on the bike and off it! Enjoy the ride tomorrow everyone.

Sorry guys, we didn't quite make it today.
Were about 10 minutes late getting to marrickville road cafe. Found 2 dhbc guys preparing for the waterfall ride and said the bunch just left 2 minutes ago :| .
Tried to catch up but couldn't cause not too sure about the actual route (didn't upload the map to our phone last night! sorry :( )
Hope everyone had fun! PS: we ended up joining the waterfall ride :D

Great ride out to Springwood this morning.
Big thanks to Mark & Mike for a great piece if organisation.
Good company, great scenery and some powerful rural smells.
Bit chilly though.
Big thanks to Phillip, Keith and Nick for dragging me home.

Really good ride. My thanks to organisers too. It really needs to become one of the regular adventure rides. Only downside is that it was so cold on the section out to Windsor that I'm now fighting off a cold. Small price to pay...

Really enjoyed the Adventure today! Also chalked up my biggest single ride courtesy of heading back with Philip, Andrew and Nick.

Loved the climb up to Springwood.
A big thank you to Mark and Mike for organising the ride.

Quotable quotes from the ride:

Question: What happened to you yesterday?
Answer: I was scared by your in and out ...

Stuart (in third wheel): I'm not going to the front! I'm sitting in the bunch today, this is an adventure ride!
Philip (sitting on the front): Pain is an Adventure.

I'm sure there are more so feel free to share them ...

I will dress better for any ride West in future as the temperature dropped and all my extremities froze.

Phillip, Andrew and Nick a great ride back and a pleasure to ride with you. Will be forever conscious of my toe overlap from now on :-)

Big thanks to Mike and Mark, a great ride, I had an absolute ball.

When too much pain is just not enough, some of us rode home.

Mark has come out with a great route, we will definitely have to do that one again next year

Temperature wise, it was cold when we left Marrickville when we left, which is expected but I was surprised to see that it got even colder riding out west. The good thing was there was a sizable jump in temperature while we had morning tea. And this resulted in a really great ride from there on.

It also shows that we haven't exhausted all the potential Adventure routes that can be done departing from Marrickville

Hi All,

Thanks for coming along and making the ride what it was today, successful by all accounts.
I was talking with Mike earlier this evening and discussing what seemingly made it a hit.
We came up with a range of possibilities:- nice day, thou it was cold- maybe dam cold as we approached Windsor,
-it wasn't quite an all day ride,
-nice climb with switch-backs, seemed nice and challenging and don't think anyone
suffered too much, -
- different direction, only the 2nd time I've ridden west of Parramatta,
-that we were able to roll along at a good pace out to Windsor,
-and that we had 2 stops.
I'm keen to know what made it a good ride for you for future ideas :)

On the quotes, I recall Svetlana saying she was slow at MRC this morning. "No problem, it's not meant to be a fast ride" I said. Then around Stanhope Gardens Svetlana rolls to the front feeling as though she must do a turn and I said "you can just roll off if you like, you don't have to do a turn". Well, several k's later Svetlana is still on the front and rolling around 38kph and looking comfortable :)

Then around Vineyard Stuart IS ON THE FRONT give us a good tow along having previously declared that he was sitting in today :)

Kudos to The Orient cafe who looked after us by offering the Lunch menu early, putting us in the comfortable outdoor sheltered seating with a gas heater, good food and prompt service :)

Adam- I hope you can shake that cold quickly!
Philip- as usual, nice work on the photos :)
Anna and Robert- yes, we gave you some grace and it was time to roll.

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks again Mark, not sure what made it such a good one but a new direction and a great hill are my two picks.

last pic, this ones of Micheal and Nick on the last pitch before the lookout. Can't see much but nice mood.

A great day out indeed. Not much like the older style, rambling along adventure rides as the pace was fairly quick out to Windsor and yes I did a short 4-5k turn on the front on a lovely hot mixed dual lane piece of road that mostly sloped downwards at 1-2%. Nick thought we must have had a tailwind as we were motoring along. Still, everybody stayed on so the pace was just right :shock:

The climb was like all climbs - to be endured :-) But luckily not too long.

Coffee was fast and friendly in Windsor and Breakfast / Lunch at the pub was great. All up an excellent ride that could only be improved by going in late Spring or late Summer ... could even extend it to Katoomba, or go a bit slower. I also own the slowest ever DHBC time on Strava up that hill.

Adventure Ride - Bundeena Ferry - 6am Sunday 23rd June

A technical issue is preventing the thread heading being changed. Stuart will get on top of it in a day or 2. Anyway here's the next one;

Adventure Ride - Bundeena Ferry - 6am Sunday 23rd June

It was requested that instead of entering RNP at Audley that we enter via Waterfall. So the route is;
Marrickville -> Waterfall -> RNP -> Bundeena -> Ferry to Cronulla -> Marrickville.
The ferry departs every hour on the hour. Last year the ride arrived at Bundeena at 8.40am and they caught the 9am ferry. This year with the longer route we are more likely to be on the 10am ferry, so we will enjoy the Bundeena coffee shop and lots of bike nerd conversation.
