We've all done it, ridden past that pothole and muttered "someone should fix that" but didn't report it. As cyclists we are close to the road and observant about road conditions that affect us. That's not always the case for road repair crews or decision makers who probably aren't thinking bike. But we can, and should, help.

A couple of years ago, one of our members hit a hidden sinkhole in RNP and hit the tarmac hard. Turned out to be notorious hole but it seemed that nobody had actually reported it. 2 members rode out, marked the hole (you can still faintly see the arrow) and then reported it to RMS along with info about the crash. Within a weekit was repaired temporarily and a couple of weeks later that section was cut out and resealed. Voila!

About once a year we report the Bestic St lights and after a bit of correspondence, the RMS turns the sensitivity of the light sensors up and it works again. It does work to report.

DHBC is a community minded club and we reckon we can all help in getting better roads by reporting damaged roads. We want you to help with this, and to keep it interesting we are starting a competition to report the most holes, bumps and hazards in 2016. There will be a worthwhile prize for the Gold, Silver and Bronze reporting at the Christmas Party.

And we should have a handy club total at the end of the year about our collective contribution to getting things fixed.

You can report it either through a handy free App "Snap, Send, Solve" available for iPhone and Android via the App Store. Or you can report to RMS. Both accept photos, know who owns the road in question and you get feedback. Don't forget to also tell us on the forum that you've reported it so you get points.

Here's how it will work.

At the top of your post
Very brief description e.g. Pothole in RNP at bottom of Garie

You get 1 point for reporting.
If you make multiple reports of the same hole, you get a point for each report.
When it gets fixed you get an extra 2 points.
More than one person can make a report.

(No doubt we will have to adjust the rules as we go along given we haven't done this before.)

We'll keep a rolling list so copy and past, add your points to make a cumulative total and put yourself in the right place in the list.

Ha! Love this.

I reported the 'bump' on Olala via 'Snap Send Solve' last week after Nick's bingle. If someone can please check on hills tomorrow whether it has been fixed? I believe Peter Bownes knows where it is.

Great idea!

As a FYI, most roads will be council roads. The map here shows the RMS assets. If it's green, red or blue it's RMS. Anything else and its council.

Please don't contact the RMS maintenance division unless reporting an RMS road. They are super busy and under staffed!

How about the sink hole on Little Everleigh between Lawson & Wilson. The council keeps filling and it keeps sinking.
Have a great ride,
Peter

The point is though, that you actually report it to RMS yourselves. It's an individual competition.

So far I have

Do we count holes in footpaths?

Interesting question - many footpaths are legally part of the road. And kids ride on the footpath.

I guess we can count footpaths on that basis.

I've reported the long cracks in the road where Victoria Rd joins Myrtle St under the rainway line. Also someone has patched the rut on King St I reported.

I thought that I would give an update about all those holes I reported around Eastern Suburbs.

Firstly I can’t fathom why the roads in the east are so bad given that Waverley Council has a comparatively strong balance sheet. But in their defence the Council seems to be taking my reports seriously.

It might take a while for me to report back on holes being filled but it looks promising. I get emails from the Council telling me things have been “finalised” – not sure if that means fixed. But I have had a couple of emails from real people at the Council – here’s a recent one:

“Good afternoon John, thanks for letting us know about the several issues with road surface in the area. I will arrange for our bitumen team to patch several of these and this will occur in the next week or so weather permitting. Others like 22 Gaerloch Ave, 45 & 194 Military Rd will require heavy patching by a contractor and we will organise this ASAP but it may take a few weeks. Lastly the cracks in the road at Campbell Pde will also be filled and this work will be done by a contractor and carried out in the next couple of months as we will be getting other areas treated at the same time. Thanks”

Not all roads are Council owned and maintained roads – Old South Head Road is a State Road, and I have to go through RMS to try and get that one fixed.

Anyway, making progress – I hope to ramp up the points tally when I can verify from my own inspection that the road surface has been repaired.

And Marrickville Council have not been too bad either. So don't be shy you guys can report too - I might be highlighted as some kind of vexatious reporter if I overload them too much. I might lay off Waverley for a while unless I see a really nasty hole.

Probably due to the fact that they don't spend much on maintenance?

Some of the pavements in the eastern suburbs are rigid pavements and are difficult to repair. Flexible pavements usually have the potholing. This is easier to repair but councils generally just fill them up as a quick fix. These quick fixes last from a day to a couple of weeks!

Happy days! They fixed the metal rod sticking up ... by reinstating the bollard that was supposed to go there. Better warn Saturday Slowies.

I reported the new traffic lights on the Airport Drive Cycleway. The lights are set to red for cyclists when they could be set to green with a red left turn for cars. At the moment when we cross, it also stops the cars heading north on the Airport Drive. I made the point that this is a congestion generating phasing and not helpful. I encourage everyone to report these lights.
