Great news everyone - due to popular demand, the next SUVelo race in May we will be offering a women's B grade division

Women's B grade will start at 7.30am and to cater for the extra grade we're reshuffling the start time of A grade to be run at the later time slot of 8.30am.

For those unfamiliar with racing, the criterium format for B grade women will be as follows:

- 40 minutes + bell lap
- In the first half of the race there will be a prime (interim sprint) that will be indicated by the commissaire by a whistle the lap prior
- There is no drafting off other grades allowed
- If you suffer a mechanical prior to the last 2 laps, you may have a lap out while you fix the problem and re-enter the race
- All the usual things like keeping your line through corners and during the sprint apply - safety first

The team at SUVelo really hopes that the women cyclists of Sydney get behind the racing and come along to give it a go - if you've never raced before, this is the perfect opportunity to race in a supportive, controlled environment with your peers. Plus great prizes as always.

FOR YOUR DIARY:

Sunday May 20, Heffron Park Maroubra
Sign on from 7am, $10 entry fee
7.30am Womens B Grade, Mens C and D
8.30am Womens A Grade, Mens A and B

Also Sunday June 17, July 15, August 12

Please pass on to anyone you think might be interested

I spoke to Mel from SU Velo last night and said I would come and race if there was women's B grade and it sounded like they needed one last week as a few got dropped. So I'm in.

This is awesome. I was just discussing how wrong it was that there was 4 grades for men and 1 for women at SUvelo's Heffron races. Good news for Sydney cycling.

I also plan to ride in this, it was fun last time.

Just checking....

Yep will also be riding in the dudes race. what grade are
you going to go in taylor? i did c last time, i feel i would
get a better race in b but i think i will get dropped pretty
quickly. and the money was good for these races too,
incentive to go lower and try for the cash...

Awesome.

Last time if you won the prime and came first they doubled your money, one a $100 for D grade!

Im still not sure what grade to race. I have only raced heffron once and that was last month with SUVelo. I did D grade. 8 riders started 3 Dullo boys, I was in both break aways and took second. 2nd break away was away for almost half the race. It was really a matter of just cruising to the sprint. I feel I got beat by tactics and not fitness. So thats why I am not sure wether to do D or C. Should I roll in D one more time and try my hand at a more tactical race or should I just jump into C and be done with it. Will have to sleep on it. B might still be a bit advanced for me at the moment.

Chidgley came out last time and went in C grade and came 2nd. If he comes that might mean there would be three of us in C.

Just all of you stay out of Women's B grade - including Lizanne - and I'll be happy :)

I might come down if my bike is in a suitable condition... And if I can hold on to the handlebars. Will let you know!

Oh, and I'm with Eleri. No Lizanne. ;-)

Posted on another forum, you probably know the poster
From my club (LACC) newsletter:
Womans Criterium Series 2012

Earlier this year a survey was conducted for female members of Cycling NSW based in Sydney to gauge interest in participating and the support they would give to the establishment of women’s only graded crit races.

A number of options were proposed and the majority of support indicated a wish for monthly weekend races within the Sydney area where members could access a safe circuit, be able to ride to and from with ease, and for the racing to be graded to A and B when numbers permitted.

Three clubswere approached that already have an established crit racing schedule on 3 different circuits (Heffron Park, Waratah Park and SOP – Tennis Centre) and all agreed to offer a women’s grade in their schedules, and, when numbers permitted to have an A + B grade.

We have now established a women’s grade crit every month for 2012 at these venues and want you to spread the word amongst the cycling community, turn up to race, and in general support the development of women’s racing in NSW.

We are also proposing to hold 3 days at Dunc Gray crit circuit with a morning of skill development, race tactics, and preparation followed by an afternoons racing with something to attract all levels of skills and experience. Once again support from a wide cross section of females will be what makes these days successful along with growth of women’s cycling in Sydney.

Might drag my sorry butt down there with my camera for some happy snaps. Provided there is some kind of sausage sizzle there.

No sausage sizzle from memory but there is a coffee cart.

I'm looking forward to this. Hope lots of DHBC people come along to race.

I'll was going to be heading down direct from Newtown, but I only have a vague idea and an iphone to get me there... Maybe starting at the cafe would be more sensible...

Hi James, both Eleri and I are also in Netown but I figure it's nicer is we all roll over as a group. I know the way from Marricville Rd and its not that much of a detour. It's also a good warm up!

Text me Patty - 0419 708 118. I'll be up late tonight watching the Giro, so any time tonight is fine.
What time were you thinking? I could meet you out the front of Peter's of Kensington at 6-6:30ish if that leaves you enough time to sign in etc.

I'm out... Turns out my fork is tapered and not compatible with either of the ones I was going to borrow and my bike is sitting in pieces on the lounge room floor. Not sure racing on a single speed is a good idea.

Well this got washed out - which was a pity. I was keen to race and suitably nervous. We got to Heffron and heard the bad news, which we kind of suspected on the way over at the point when our socks felt the rain. Never a good sign.

Adrian, Taylor, James, Andrew and I went for a tour of the East and I found out that carbon wheels are harder to stop going down hill in the wet but make going uphill so much better. And fortunately we stayed dryer than the Waterfall tourists appear to have and finished up with a very pleasant second breakfast in Waverley.
