2009 2010 2011
Welcome to the politically correct 2012 flat tyre competition.

Loosely based on feedback received, the following rule changes have been incorporated;
1. Sexual discrimination has been removed
2. Physical flats must be recorded in the brackets
3. New special bonus for acquiring tubes of members of other clubs - Devious points
4. New zero flat comp

As per last year, the points are on the bar to the left and physical flats are in the brackets on the right

Flat Tyre Rules ===================================
Definition: Requirement to replace tube/single due to its inability to maintain air. Valve failure is accepted.
Traveling requirements: Wheel must be ridden on, to deem it to be a separate flat

Basic Points
0.0 Get flat tyre
1.0 Repair own flat tyre, ie change the tube

Bonus Points
0.5 Repair another DHBC riders tyre, ie change the tube
0.5 Successfully patch your own tube
0.5 Lend another DHBC rider a tube, even if you didn't know you lent the tube (it happened in 2011)

Penalty Points
-0.5 Someone else repairs your tyre, ie replaces the tube or tyre
-0.5 Don't return the tube within 14 days - any form of payment is acceptable
-0.5 Cause of flat is patch failure
-0.5 Pinch the tube putting it on, even if its someone else doing it for you
-1.0 Get a flat while not having a pump or spare tube. Not applicable at the velodrome

Devious Points
Devious points are acquired by securing a tube from a member of another club, however you can only claim the points if you do not return or pay for the tube
1.0 Other club member not in club uniform
2.0 Other club member is in club uniform

Zero Flats Knockout Competition ==========================
At the end of each month, those who haven't had any flats can state their estimated moving K's for the month (if you don't know then guess) in a separate list. It's a knock out competition, once you have a flat, your out

Competition Period===================================
Both competitions run from Jan 1st 2012 until about a week before the DHBC Christmas party

Let me just state that I've never had a flat tyre, either on my current road bike of ~250km or my Aldi hybrid of ~800km (sorry to everyone I'm riding with tomorrow for jinxing myself), bring on the knockout.

How to tubeless tyres fit in? Do I get points for patching them?

I'm curious Eleri, what time was your flat? Mine was probably at about 6:50am, who was first for the year?

You. I found mine in the evening and I had not ridden after about 10am and I didn't notice it was flat then.

Crack in road on Victoria rd, riding home from the Cafe. Lizanne offered to repair it for me, clearly a devious attempt to gain points

This morning in Centennial Park. Some glass in a previously booted cut in the tyre casing. Put a new boot on the tyre and put in a new tube.

Punctured going down Bondi Hill with the Valley Wheelers. Fixed it at the cafe at the bottom of the hill.
Suspect this will be the only club competition I will lead....

Can I get clarification on Bonus Points rule #2 please?

It states that you get 0.5 points for successfully patching your own tube. After a flat, I almost always go home and patch the tube straight away. Under the rules, as I see it, I will always get 1.5 points for each flat I get. I patch the tube at a different time to when I get the flat, but there is nothing in the rules that requires me to patch my own flat at the same time as when the flat occurs. Repairing a puncture involves the same amount of work, whether it's on the road, or at home. They both use the same amount of glue and rubber. It's simply a repair that takes place at a more convenient time.

Further, if I sit at home, with a 10 punctured tubes, and I carry out 10 repairs of flat tubes, I should have amassed 5 points, without actually having suffered a flat on the road. I see nothing in the rules that states that you need to repair your punctures in the same year as the puncture occurs to acquire the 0.5 points per repair.

The rule states: 0.5 Successfully patch your own tube

It doesn't state a time relationship between when the flat occurred and when the patch was applied. The only time stated is the period of the competition. As long as you the owner of the tube and its patched during the period of the competition, then you deserve the points.

Cunning riders who don't patch their tubes will stash them and if near the end of the comp they are within points striking distance, do a bulk patch session.

So if I get given 10 punctured tubes from someone, they are mine when I patch them, so I still get the points.

What about if I patch my tube with someone else's repair kit? The tube is still mine, although the rubber patch and tyre cement are not...

If you are given 10 tubes by someone, then you own them. The rules don't state the ownership of the patch or cement

Its all about maximising your points within the boundary of the rules

I have a nice collection pre-loved tubes available at a reasonable price :)

The rule is clear:
0.5 Successfully patch your own tube

But .... you can't claim that that repair due to a particular flat was successful until you ride on it: "Traveling requirements: Wheel must be ridden on, to deem it to be a separate flat"

So the status of the repair is indeterminate until the tube is subsequently used. (sort of like Schrödinger's cat - Wikepedia will be your friend on this one peeps.) From a quantum mechanical perspective, you couldn't call the repair successful (and hence claim the 0.5 point) until you subsequently ride on it.
Clarification Mike?

Andrew, you're an engineer, but clearly not a lawyer.

No-one is deeming a repaired tube to be a separate flat. Indeed, there need not be a flat at all in the competition timeframe, as already clarified by Mike.

"Successfully" has not been defined in the rules. This means that we need to apply the reasonable person's definition of what "successfully" means, not some other reference to another matter in the rules, which has no bearing on the definition at hand. I think the reasonable definition would be something very similar to saying that the tube was functional again, and capable of holding air.

If the Andrewb definition were to be taken to it's extreme, one might argue that since this is a flat tyre competition, the tube repair is not successful until the tube is repaired, installed, riddden, and either fails to hold air from the repair, or punctures again somewhere else. I would not argue that a successful repair is one where the tube does not hold air, and most reasonable people would not either...

-0.5 Cause of flat is patch failure
Seems straightforward. You get half a point for patching your tube. You lose that half point if the patch subsequently fails.

I can foresee a patchathon in my near future. (No need to sell me any tubes, I've got heaps of my own).

You should of done it in the 2009 comp, the rules were written in a way to enable disagreement

1.
Andrew, you're an engineer, but clearly not a lawyer.
ooh, yeah

2. My definition was just: the tube repair is not successful until the tube is ridden, and holds air or doesn't.

It's quite plausible that a repair could seem "successful" (in the reasonable usage definition) after the patch is applied and the tube tested, but stops holding air during a subsequent installation process, and isn't able to be ridden on. According to the competition rules "travelling requirements", this would not be a separate flat, even if the tube was not installed for some time after the patch was applied.

From there, my reasoning was that if the rules say it isn't a separate flat, then it must be deemed to be the same flat.
So ... if (possibly a considerable time later) following a repair the tube has the "same flat" as existed prior to the repair, then as far as the competition is concerned, the repair has not changed the status of the tube, and therefore would not be considered "successful" (in the domain of the competition).

3.
Seems straightforward. You get half a point for patching your tube. You lose that half point if the patch subsequently fails.
I agree. My point was a philosophical consideration of that (ahem) 0.5 point which is somewhat in limbo until the tube is actually ridden on.

4.

Not like some ...

Andrew :)

Rear on the fixie, which has gatorskin, tyre liner and that gunk stuff in the tube. The gunk wouldn't fix it, so I had to pull it out and the problem was that the tyre liner had split and that split had caused the flat

+1 Rear went down again on the way to Rockdale. This time I was stuffed, I had no remaining spare tubes. I phoned Tim who lives nearby and asked him for some patches, which he didn't have but he dropped by and lent me a tube. As I'm jumping the ditch on Thursday, I don't think I'll be able to return the tube within 14 days

Points
1.0 Repair own flat tyre, ie change the tube
-1.0 Get a flat while not having a pump or spare tube. Not applicable at the velodrome
-0.5 Don't return the tube within 14 days - any form of payment is acceptable

Interesting that the rule doesn't state that the spare tube has be operational, one could argue that I still had a spare tube, even though it wasn't operational due to being punctured. But I'm gunna take it on the cheek

Another one this morning. Unlike yesterday arvo's one which was a pinch flat, this one appears to of been caused by the rim tape, which has somehow shifted allowing a tiny bit of the spoke hole to appear

Patchathon!! Had the day off work so I patched 8 tubes today, 3x18-23 and 5x23-28. Water tested them for leaks after I was finished, so I'm reasonably confident that they're now ok. Also found several good 27" tubes, so I've now got plenty of spares for all my bikes.

and lent the club 2 tubes 1 new and one newly patched +2
i also helped Ben fix one of his flats, he had the smalles bit of metal wire stuck in his tyre 3 flats in 3 days. so he asked me to do it

I haven't had a flat! woohoo although i feel one coming and i recon i did my usual 1200k's last month (my new bike doesn't have a speedo yet)

1200 km this month! you must ride in the rain :P

Can't wait until it stops and I can ride to work and back most days, always gets me feeling more awake and alert for the day.
ya, 300k weeks are standard for me, rain shine, snow. I don't have a car and bike is how i get around. and i've been doing a couple extra rides. i need to put a speedo on my new bike so i can actually see what i'm doing.

I know I don't get extra points, but I punctured my rim today. Nail, through tyre, tube and inside of the rim.

At the cafe, Lizanne found a flat tyre on her fixie. She didn't have a spanner to change the wheel, spare tube or pump. My biggest spanner was a 14mm, and she needed a 15mm otherwise I'd have lent her a tube. She used my patch kit and she fixed it without taking the wheel off. She used my pump when it was repaired.

I've awarded myself .5 of a point. Feel free to disagree (I guess that's the point of this thread). I've left Lizanne to work out her own points as it seems a little complicated.

Zero flat last year and the trend continues this year despite some full thickness cuts in my front tyre that just got changed out. Locking in the 0(0) spot. ;)

Show me which clause in the competition rules that said "need". :P

In any case, replace the front tyre due to full thickness cuts. The inner was bulging out already but no flat. Rear tyre is looking a tad on the thin side and I am not confident it'll keep me puncture free for the coming months.

Despite only done 11k since returning to cycling, I've managed to run over a screw, which screwed my tube. Did manage to save the tyre by patching it

2 flats this morning :(
first one i patched on the spot and pumped up!
+1.5
second one i hit a pothole and the patch i fixed failed, i then borrowed a tube (i didn't have a spare, i just had a repair kit) for the sake of speed, and chucked the old tube. it had 2 other patches on it.
+1
-1.5
so that gives me a net of 1 point and a few more flats to add to my tally

so i have 3 flats to report
1 at the rolling with clover ralley. it just went pop. i had no gear so i walked to MC picked up a tube and fixed it.
1 point for fixing the flat
-1 for not having the gear

had another one riding to the bunch for the RNP ride yesterday. it was a big slash so didn't patch. looked for the culprit, pulled out a piece of glass. and then fixed the flat.
1 for fixing
then it punctured again. the original puncture was a large slash (about 1 a cm) in my tyre. time for a new one. I patched it with a $5 bill. stole a tube from ben (replaced it with pizza last night) and borrowed a pump
1 point for fixing
-1 for being caught without gear again
all up positive 1 point! :D but i recon with all the bad luck i'm having i might need to invest in a good pump... naw

Does a slow leak from a Waterfall run count?
Didnt realise I had a problem until the next morning when my front tyre was flat.

have you changed the flat? or are you happy to pump it up each ride?
i think i have a slow leak in my track bike. it looses pressure really fast(it's soft weekly)... but i haven't declaired it a flat yet, and have not changed it. i'm just happy to keep pumping it.

are you still in the running for zero flats? maybe it's worth ignoring

Dunno. I think I picked it up at the slowies last Saturday - glass no doubt.
Think I need to replace the entire tyre, not only the inner tube. Besides doing the B2B in 2 weeks time so have to get it fixed.
I will include my name in the Flat Tyre list soon.

Had my first ever flat this morning so I'm out of the no flats competition :(

Hit a huge pothole and got a pinch flat, replaced tube only to find out that my backup tube had developed a hole when in my saddle bag somehow and I wasted two CO2 cylinders trying to fill it before I realised. Patched both tubes today and they're both good to go again, so if I read the rules correctly that's:

Had a flat = 0
Changed the tube = 1.0
Patch tube = 0.5 x 2
Score = 2

+1 = 11

Front again. This time it was caused by a split in the tyre liner. I'm also completely out of spare tubes so will patch some. Last week I put a new rim tape on the front wheel. This week I'll put a new tyre and tyre liner.

Not that I'm expecting the puncture fairy to go away...

Rear was flat when I went to ride it. While I was at it, I played musical tyres, moving from the road bike to the fixie, new on the road bike. Now I need more new tyres

Firming up my position on the podium. I repaired a flat on the way back from West Head a couple of weeks ago. Today I lent Marc a tube after he had his second flat on the rather windy C25/C28/Middies Waterfall ride. So, plus 1.5 points. I'll leave Marc to work out his own points :).

Nearly time for another patchathon.

Lost count.
Someone needs to invent unpuncturable race tyres. Either that or eliminate all beer bottle smashing bogans in the Shire area.

after a good start to the year, i've had the worst luck this winter. all have been results of nails, pot holes, and tyre slices. so the new gator skins have been great against glass, but not me being a space cadet.
6 flats all fixed but no tube patches. (archived form the winter, i was trying not to jinx myself)
then 1x tubular on my commute... no hope in fixing that. do i get bonus points if i glue the new one on myself?
1 pinch on the weekend. a hole was not called while riding in a bunch. :(

so that's
7 points for the flats
1 for the tubular, and 3479 bonus points when i glue on the new one
and 2! bonus for stealing a tube off a MC rider in kit.

BOOM! i win at loosing.
