This p***es me off, given that I just paid the same for a 20" kids bike for the boy's birthday and kids road bikes can't be had for under $400.

Hmmm - it would probably break like Kristina Keneally's bike did last week.

Where do you get decent kid's road bikes? I'm after a new bike for my soon to be 9 y/o. Something that doesn't way a ton would be nice.

The best price I've seen on a kids road bike is this fella: http://www.getprice.com.au/Kids-Road-Bi ... 325032.htm
Cell and others have a kids road bike at $599
My lad's turning 9.

Nice. Bit of pressure to go the mountain bike option, but these would be much lighter I guess.

Yep - kids think MTBs are cool and road bikes are for dads whose lycra doesn't fit very well :D
There are some alloy framed MTBs out there - Ashfield did me a Holstar at $249. It's still about 14kgs, but at least that is lighter than supermarket/Kmart bikes. And with better components. And assembled.

So true! Dads in lycra definitely kill the coolness of road bikes.

Thanks for the tips; I'll check out the lighter mountain bikes as well. I have never and will never buy a bike from kmart/big w.

True, but mine also realises that the only way to keep up with dad is to get a narrow tyres, low weight road bike. MTB and other heavy tanks just don't cut it.
