Mi bike's chain skips gears. Where can I get it serviced cheap?

Q: How complex it is to DIY? Wot tools I need?

A: Depends on why it is skipping? How many kms has the chain and cassette done? If it only skips down, ie into small cogs then it could just be cable stretch and can be adjusted using the barrel adjuster on the derailluer. If its not that you can measure how worn a chain is either with a chain guage or vernier calipers. You can get 3 chains to a cassette if you change them before they get to 1% stretched. When cassettes wear the teeth with become pointed.

As for getting it serviced, most people have their favorite bike shops where they get good service. You could try, Burwood Cycleworld, Ashfield Cycles, Stanmore Cycles, Peter Bundy Cycles. With all of these remember to mention you are with DHBC.

It's done about 4000km only

Then your chain will be stretched, probably past 1%. So it looks like you will need a new chain at a minimum. If its not too far gone then your cassette should be ok.

To change the chain you are going to need a chain breaker to make the new one the correct length. I can attempt to remember to bring a chain guage on Sunday, but I think its going to need replacing either way.

1% stretch is pretty late for replacement. Many, including Campy, has their upper spec set at 0.5%. And just yesterday I did a tally and noted the Veloce chain on the Bianchi is now just under 9000km and is just inside the 0.5% spec. Yet I also understand that Shimano and some other brands don't wear nearly as well. YMMV.

Chain change is much much cheaper is purchased online and done at home. It's very easy with the correct tool.

Spoke to Mick Mazza's mechanic. He said $45 for the new chain + $30 for labour.

Q: Can my bike's chain be replaced by any shimano 10 speed chain or there are groupset specific chains? My bike is shimano 105.

There's more choices than just Shimano branded chains which exhibit a range of durability.

I'll do it for beer. If Vic does it, she may charge $25, but then I'm going to charge her $20.

But in the past you've done it for non-redeemable brownie points... ;)

ok ok... $25 for Vic, and a beer for Christian. Any more bids? The tender is still open for bids :)

But, as of now, I don't even know whether the chain requries replacement or not or the cassette requires replacement as well. I am clueless how to investigate wot's wrong?!

Read it all about it at Sheldon's. It's all about chain wear.

I think I need a new cassette... And a hub rebuild. I'm hoping to get a hub rebuild lesson - what's the charge for that kind of thing Christian? It might require a whole case of Monteiths Summer Ale? ;)

Catch is, I would make you drink at least a 6 pack while you're doing it.

A challenge, I like that. Its not that big of a job, say 30 minutes to an hour, so a six pack in that time is going to be messy. If I'm teaching you to do it it may take longer, so I'll be slightly less drunk at the end.

Sounds like I'd have to take my time so I'd still be able to walk at the end, I think it could be helped by a BBQ.

I'd be getting paid in beer, so the payment depends on how much I drink.

Hang on, are you asking me to cook as well? That might be taking it a bit too far. I only offered beer. You can do the cooking, in which case I might do some baking in return. Cookies/tart's (ok so I've only ever made one tart, but it was freakin good) are far more my thing than cooking up a storm on a BBQ.

I wasn't saying you had to cook a BBQ, I can rebuild hubs whilst turning snags whilst drinking beer. I'm that good.

I heard it was tradition to have a party at Christian's house after the boxing day omnium.

It's also tradition for Christian to cook dinner after an omnium... So you will be getting fed!

I cooked dinner after an omnium once, for one, not many. As for a party at mine on Boxing day, thats happened once. Not sure we can call either of these a tradition.

I've been off the bike so long that new track events are starting - what is the current Tempe Koga tossing record?

I may have just dropped it onto grass, the furthest its has been tossed is 0 metres. How did this new competition start anyway, why don't we do some Teschner tossing or Apollo tossing whilst we are at it. We can see which bike flies the best.

NB. Christian does not condone the tossing of track bikes, Especially his own.

Koga tossing sounds like the most fun. Especially after it's been freshly waxed.

I thought bike tossing was a Road thing. The orthodox methods David Millar and Bjarne Riis, plus the unusual by Mattias Kessler
