Cyclists fixated with latest trend
Well, seems some club members were actually trend setters!

That's it, I'll need to avoid it to maintain my counter-trend ideal.

Ah yes Weiyen but its also currently popular to be the person who is against current trends, therefore your caught in a never ending paradox.

No brakes and he doesn't appear to be running clipless pedals or toeclips so the aforementioned "applying back pressure to the pedals." isn't going to be effective.

You're right about the brakes, but you can still apply back pressure without clipless. I do it all the time on my unicycle.

If you don't have brakes then you need to stop with a skip stop. Applying backward pedalling force takes far too long to stop. (At least 100m!)

A skip stop involves momentarily lifting your weight off the back wheel, then stopping its rotation whilst weightless. when you reweight the back wheel, it will skid along the road, since its rotation has been stopped. This skidding is what scrubs off all your speed, as well as a fair amount of tyre rubber.

Not something to try without lots of practice, but not dependant on your type of shoes or pedals.

Example of skid stop (also known as a skid stop).

Example of the skip don't stop.

Then there's always the stick stop! *

* A reference to some lawsuit in the USA where a messenger was found to be at fault in an accident because she didn't have a brake. the gov't lawyer said something to the effect of 'if she had a stick to rub against her wheel she might have a case'.
