I just bought my first MTB magazine, whilst waiting for a plane at the airport. Does that offically make me a mountain biker now or do I have to destroy at least one real derailier first?

Destroying a derailleur will help, although I've never done that. I like to think that your most expensive bike determines what sort of cyclist you are, it makes me a mountain biker, even though I have three other bikes that get ridden more.

Sorry Alex but you aren't a mountain biker until you've stopped shaving your legs, shudder at the thought of riding in a bunch, turn up to races hung over and don't even mention it cos you KNOW everyone else is too...

You know you're a SS mtber when you wake your partner up in the middle of the night cos you are frantically moving your legs, and realise you were just riding some sweet singletrack in your dream that you were slightly under geared for (true story!)

You're a SSer when you actually think riding a SS is a better way to get around, they all need help.

Man I am going to assume that I am a hardcore mountain biker as soon as I jump on a bike tomorrow, I just dont conform to all these rules you lot try and give to my sport :D Totally strait edge hey! (which turns out isn't a religious thing!)
