floor pump

My silca floor pump stopped working recently. It probably needs a new leather washer which may not be easy to source, and the cover over the pressure gauge is broken anyway. In line with most things being throwaway nowadays, I'm wondering whether it wouldn't be simpler to just buy a cheapy every couple of years.

I don't know that pump, but at $15 I'd be a bit reserved about buying it. I brought my floor pump for $80 in 2000 and its' still going strong.

Is there any chance of fixing the silca floor pump?

The beauty of the SILCA is they are rebuildable, however once that gauge takes a hit & they are fragile, that's it for them. I got one for the track & thought if I get a year out of it I'd be happy as it gets used heaps by everybody. Now it's about 4 years old & still good, I've replaced a few bits however it has a big soft plastic cover over the gauge & that is what has kept it alive.

With the rubber washer on the Silca's they are too tight for 45%, just right for 10% & too loose for the remaining 45%.

My feelings is any devices with the the term SMART_SOMETHING_OR _OTHER are no good. I have a cheapie at home with a smart_valve & it's real dumb. When you use presta it tries to blow out the schrader hole. I'd like to replace the hose with one from an old silca I've got (with a broken gauge)

My silca has a leather washer. Even though the gauge cover is smashed, the gauge still seems (or seemed) to register pressure accurately. The hose used to blow off at 120psi anyway, so that was a useful measure of pressure. I'll probably give the torpedo7 cheapy a miss.

I bought a Serfas pump a few years ago for about $60. The gauge on it has survived my little boy knocking it over onto the wooden deck many many many times (he wants to "fix his bike tyres like daddy" all the time).

It has a smart valve thingy on it, but I haven't had any problems on my valves or any of the neighbours MTB tyres either.

Al has the rubber washers if you need one. I think he can get the other bits too, if you need them.

I have a better version of the Giyo, it has a dual purpose head, so it fits both the Presta and Schrader valve without having to change it.

However, it is the pump that I keep at work, so it doesn't get a lot of use, I basically purchased it as I got sick of flatting on the way to work and not being able to inflate my tyres fully with a hand pump. Plus the other riders use it as well.

If you need a high pressure pump, then fork out some decent money for it. I have a Serfas at home, and it hasn't missed a beat yet.
