Boonen caught with cocaine?

Belgian super star sprinter, Tom Boonen has allegedly been caught in an out of competition test for cocaine, according to Belgian newspaper HLN.be. The out of competition test allegedly occurred three days before start of the Tour of Belgium, where Boonen won the final stage.

The Belgian paper also reported that the homes of Boonen's parents and girlfriend in Postel and Lore respectively were searched last night. The non-negative test has also not yet been confirmed by the UCI. Boonen's Quick Step team was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.

This is not the first time that Boonen has been linked to the drug. Last December, his good friend and cyclo-cross star, Tom Vanoppen was caught by the Flemish doping controllers with cocaine. During questioning Vanoppen allegedly named Boonen as his dealer, a claim Boonen later denied. Following the claim, Boonen's parent's house was searched.

Boonen's brush with the law does not stop there however. Just last week, he lost his drivers license for the second time in six weeks. On Tuesday night he was pulled over by the police travelling at 180-km/h in a 90km/h zone on the Mol ring road. He had a blood alcohol reading of 1.0.

Six weeks earlier he lost his license for 14 days for travelling 120km/h in a 70km/h zone. In 2006 Boonen was the face of the Belgian roads and traffic Authority, promoting safe driving.

back to the question, should they check for recreational drugs?

back to the question, should they check for recreational drugs?
1. Is it legal?
2. Is it performance enhancing?
3. Morality issues.

I think the main issue is it's illegal, and can give the sport a bad image. He does need to learn to slow down a bit when not racing.

any point to it though? if it doesnt effect any thing, then if they didnt check it all, they wouldnt know, and yeah.

But yeah, for the actual sport the only bad thing is that they may kill the athletes and be bad for them etc.

But the actual reason for checking for them is because of their influence etc isnt it? if they didnt go to the press, no one would know etc.

But yeah im totally against the use of drugs of all sorts, (well illegal, not including for medicinal use, including marijuana for cancer etc etc)

Seems that out of competition positives for cocaine don't face a ban. Though it looks as though Boonen won't be allowed to race the Tour de Suisse, and possibly the Tour de France. Might also hurt his contract negotiations for next year, as Bouygues Telecom has already said "end of negotiations".

The real questions are:

1) have Quickstep approached any of us to replace Tornado at the TDF

2) will Tornado play for St George next?

I had to decline due to other racing commitments during July....

I changed my mind when they said I'd have to do a drug test.

Coke is a performance enhancing drug if taken just prior to start, or during a race. It is a stimulant, and can affect the rider's state of mind as well as his endurance, etc.

You can be disqualified for drinking too much coffee for the same reason. Who here remembers Alex Watson?

Apparently athletes on EPO (who are at risk of heart attack in their sleep due to their treacle thick blood) sometimes take cocaine to keep the heart rate up.

I thought they took caffeine off the ban list, no?

That was my understanding.

That sucks that Boonen won't ride TdF. He's one of my favourite riders.

I think caffiene is only banned if you have above a certain amount. Though from what i remember, there's a point where there are no further benefits from taking more caffiene.

It was no more than 2 cups of coffee at the last Olympics. The athletes ended up drinking decaf!

Just did a google, seems caffiene isn't on the list any more, but i think WADA is still monitoring it to decide if it should be put back on.
