premature failure?

The left crank on my commuter started creaking last week, and on thursday night I felt some play but didn't stop as it was too wet and miserable to do so. Had a look today and the crank is cracked through. Which I was surprised about as they're workmanlike 105 cranks - not exactly exotic or extra light, and I never sprint or really even get out of the saddle on this bike...

I've seen a number of posts on other forums about cracked cranks, so while it's not that common, it does happen.

Bummer. I've snapped cranks and a bottom bracket axle on my old mountain bike, by they arguably got a lot more of a hammering than these.

I put it down to your hellish assault on Melville St each day.

It's a natty little hill you don't expect in the relatively flat surrounds of west ryde... I'm glad I didn't experience catastrophic failure whilst standing on the pedals for that last little effort near the top!
