The second club information event/ friendly get together is 'So you want to race?'

It's aimed a people who want start road racing (track is pretty well catered for). John Mason and James Rogers will be leading the discussion and sharing their experiences. It will give people an idea about what events you could start with, what you should know for your first race, and where it could all lead to.

It's a big area, and may be followed up with specific sessions on things like what parents want to know about junior tour events. It's possible that in the second half of the year a club crit for beginners might be organised.

The event will be held on Sunday 25th May at Canada Bay Club, 4 William Street, Five Dock, from 2 to 4pm.

If you want to attend, please add your name on this thread.

For additional zest and spice, Simon Bolton will be joining the discussion, and elaborating on:

- Mountain bike racing as a pathway to road racing;
- His experiences on the NRS tours, from within the team car;
- Junior Tours (info for parents/guardians, and why I shouldn't be in charge of booking the hotel).

Unfortunately I'm out. I injured my wrist yesterday so I can't drive and I can't ride for a month or two. Just bought my gold license too...

A great session on what you could want to know if you are thinking of racing - or have done one or two and want pointers. And a huge thanks to James, John & Simon who did a fantastic job. They really covered so many bases and shared great experience.

We'll probably keep this thread going, on the suggestion of participants, for new racers to post what races they might try and see who else is doing it ... And stuff that would generally be useful if you're starting to race.

Thanks also to Dougie who has again given us access to the Canada Bay club.

Only thing that would have been great is a few more participants. But we'll get there.

I was thinking about heading to Eastern Creek for my first ever race this Sunday or if not this Sunday, on 15th June 2014. This Sunday is the Sydney Dragway Full at Eastern Creek. Is this ok for my first race and is anyone else going? Will I be able to warm up on the track before the race as I don't have a trainer to take there? I'm also assuming I can register on the day.......

I heard in the rain, the drag way can be rather slippery.
Check the weather first.

Marc is correct re the dragway, it's also not that interesting. Lansdowne Park is also fine for a first race, not as wide but no significant hills.

You get to warm up on the track before the race and yes you sign-on and pay your $15 on the day. If it's your first race then take your licence as they'll need to sight it. I'd suggest arrivign at least 30 mins before race start time, or even longer if you like a long warm up. We normally get there about 45 min before.

OK, first race = tick. I went to the LACC Women's race at the Sydney Tennis Centre today. I signed in at 12pm and was given a number, No 1 and put in D grade (there were A-D grades). I got chatting to a friendly fellow rider in C grade who then took me around the course for a warm up. I was asking her many questions as it was all very new. I didn't see any other red jerseys there, presuming everyone was at the track carnival. We were given the call to go to the start line 5 minutes before and they announced they were combining C & D grades (oh dear I thought and is that the norm). I had no idea of any etiquette or norms. There were about 12 women in the bunch. Off I went and expected to be riding 2 abreast but we were quickly in 1 line with me trying to get in. No such luck so I ended up at the back which is not where I wanted to be as this is where I felt the effects of the elastic band. After a few laps, I felt OK but after the sharp right turn and needing to stand up and sprint I thought, why the f&^% do I have so much luggage in my back pockets which was bobbing around substantially..... Lesson number one, de luggage before next ride. I was the only rider with 2 drink bottles! I'm sure I'm not going to get that thirsty on a Winter's day over 25kms. I now know better. We were told that after 35 minutes we would be given the signal we had 2 laps to go. At the 30 minute mark I felt like I was going to throw up and couldn't hold on to the bunch any longer. Bummer as there were only another 3 laps to go. I finished the other 3 laps, coming 4th in D grade (there were 4 riders in D grade :-)) Prizes were given to the first 3 riders. I'm happy with my 32 average and plenty Strava cups for the experience. I gave it all I had. Actually participating in a race provided me with so much info about how I would do it differently next time. I loved it. Cheers. Happy racing. Laura G.
