Excluding a slow motion topple on the bike path last year trying to avoid Keiran as he dodged an unleashed labrador, I had my first fall for ~ 15 years this morning. In light misty rain, I was turning right on a negative cambered roundabout at north ryde & over I went. Nothing serious but I can say that the standard (elbow + buttock) grazes don't hurt less as you get older!

The combination of 120psi 700x23c tyres, light rain and a turn can be dicey. Look out today!

Cheers,
Alan W

You also have to watch on days like this when it hasn't rained for a while. The cars dump oil on the road, which then gets lifted by the slight rain, which makes it even worse.

I know that I ride a lot more carefully in the wet compared to the dry.

& a few stitches, as there was a reasonable hole in the elbow.

I went through my parent's old slides last week as I'll be digitising the interesting ones, and I noticed in the old cycling photos most of us wore elbow pads. I'd forgotten about that & I'm not sure how widespread it was (maybe just the warwick boys as we used to fall off a lot!), but I guess if you use the logic that gloves are there to protect the hands in accidents, then elbow pads would be worthwhile as well. Not sure it'll take off though, unless they become available in team colours.

Cheers,
Alan W

I wimped out and didn't ride to work today. I still cross the light rail tracks at a snails pace since my fall, regardless of the weather. Riding home from sprint training last night in the storm was not enjoyable.

I have a steam powered phone without a camera so you'll have to take my word about the stitches!

Pristine sydney harbour water will do the injury a world of good. Plus having limited elbow use is a fantastic drill, as it forces you to use torso rotation & therefore the more substantial muscles in the body's core.
