I (properly) started on Strava a few weeks ago and love it.
However I'd like to map out my own runs, or 'segments'. There seems to be a lack of them west of Dulwich Hill. My question is this; do I have to be a paid up member in order to do this?

lol you are killing the km's marc, I noticed you on the list! I only started using it properly last week or the week before and am only putting in every 3rd or so ride, but am loving these segments! I am only up against my self, but its still fun!

Stuart, but after I log in and go to the 'create and keep track of your routes' page, the 'create new routes' button is greyed out. http://www.strava.com/athlete/routes

Yes it is fun Tim. Notice most of the fast dhbc guys tend to take it easy on route to the city. What really counts is the waterfall route. :)

Routes is for paid members only but you don't want to create a route you want to create a segment. Open a ride of yours and you'll see a pull down menu on the right called actions. Create segment control is in that menu

Thanks Philip. I just created several segments i.e. Lewisham, Dulwich Hill, Ashfield and Ashbury. Feel like a dog who just pissed all over the place to mark his territory.

there's a segment from the river to the water tower that runs right past your place, pretty brutal.

I know. That is why I ride one street up on the more level Hardy St.

Another question: Is it possible to isolate group of segments to calculate average speed etc? I dont own a Garmin and only use Strava via my smartphone.

The problem is that I start recording a ride when I leave home and don't stop it until I get back home. My total trip includes an 8km return trip between home and the Marrick Cafe. I am interested to only calculate my average speed for the Waterfall run (starting and ending at Marrick Cafe) and not include my commute to and from home.
If not possible have to start and stop Strava more often than I would like to.

You can 'crop' a ride Marc. So you can delete the sections at the start and end. But it does delete them and once cropped, you can't get the data back.

Or... Press start and stop at the cafe.
