Nite of the Spring Classics - Tour of Flanders

Lo All

I'm a bit of a fan of the Classics races (MSR, LBL, Roubaix, etc), and this year the Tour of Flanders falls on Easter Sunday (March 31), so we've all got the day off the next day (hurrah). As such I was wondering if anyone wanted to make a night of it?

Rough plan would be:

(1) Go to Belgian Beer Cafe and consume vast amounts of mussels, trappist monk beers, veal sausages, waffles, etc
(2) Regroup at venue X to watch said race. Shift gears into Red Wine
(3) Prove we're rock hard by riding the next morning. Given the Tour of Flanders is all about short sharp climbs on bad surfaces, I'd suggest the Eastern Suburbs 5 Hills loop

Now admittedly this is still a ways off (March 31), but I'm going to need to work out where the hell Venue X shall be. If there's only a few of us, I guess we could pile back to someone's house (the race is on SBS), but if there's a decent posse we might have to sort out a larger venue.

Any love?

Cheers
Greg

Sounds like a good plan to me. Though there is a strong chance I'll fall asleep mid race so my vote would be for a comfy couch at Venue X.

Ronde van Sydney? I say we find as much pavé as we can in lovely Sydney Town and plan a route around that.

Oooo. Like the idea of the Ronde, though I don't know the whereabouts of much Sydney pave.

Venue ideas? Someone suggested the velo hall, but I don't know it nor what mod cons it has. I was thinking the highly exotic Wests Ashfield might do the job?

Will York Lane be open? They often are for this sort of thing.

Good idea. That'd be handy for the Belgian Beer Cafe as well

Good call on York Lane. Had a chat to the owner, and he's happy to open up on the night (he'll also broadcast the event through his own channels). Looks like the venue holds about 30 or so, so there should be a bit of atmosphere.

So the slightly more refined plan is:

Belgian Beer Cafe in Harrington St around 7ish - belgian fare + trappist monk beers - http://www.heritagebarandrestaurant.com.au/
Migrate to York Lane (in York Lane) to watch the race @ 9ish - open bar and finger food - http://www.yorklane.com/
Regroup at Marrickville Rd Cafe around 7am ish on the Monday - Eastern Suburbs 5 Hills Loop - http://app.strava.com/activities/38640128 (unless someone can come up with a Sydney pave route)

This is one of those unofficial rides, so usual caveats apply (no formal ride leaders, ride at own risk, etc). We will though be entirely civil and wait atop the climbs.

Just need a firm show of hands from people keen to attend. I'll need to numbers to book the Belgian Beer caf and let Dieter @ York Lane do some planning. Happy for people to take the bits they want as well.

To kick off the list:

Greg
Lizanne
Mike
Tim L
JotheBuilder
Tim Clifford
Jeremy (?)

I'm assuming it's broadcast on Eurosport? Or is SBS doing some classics this year? I may come along on the night but likely to be away given it's Easter. Will definitely NOT be riding on the Mon if I come along though (cause I'm soft).

Bit delicate but is somebody taking over the booking of the venue for this, assuming it's still on? We should notify the venue owner either way.

BTW, Lots more classics being broadcast on SBS this year with 5 in total : http://www.sbs.com.au/cyclingcentral/ne ... IVE-on-SBS

Dieter from York Lane has contacted me today. He heard about Greg's accident. He's keen to go ahead and wondered if people from DHBC still are.

So - who's in?

I'm keen on the drinking and eating and race watching, not so sure about showing how rock hard I am by riding the next day though...

Just got an email from Dieter.

Looks like you'll need another venue as York Lane has decided not to open this weekend and show Paris Roubaix instead.

Plan B? I'm not a starter myself.
