Since the fixie century, I have become mildly obsessed with touring and the possibilities for awesome riding it opens up. It was something about those country roads, the freshness of the air, wind in my hair... You get the picture.

I've even gone as far to sort myself out with a touring bike that's pretty damn sweet and is capable of conquering all kinds of terrain. But I am sure you will hear me brag about that enough in the coming weeks.

The point of this thread is to see what kind of interest there is in doing a three (or potentially four) day tour in January. Lindsay had the awesome idea of doing a three day stint from Sydney to Nowra, Nowra to Bundanoon, Bundanoon to Sydney. As we found out on the fixie century, there are some great roads worth travelling down there.

Looking at our calendar for the month, at the moment there's really only two weekends it could be done on - the 15th and the 23rd Jan. Both would require taking the Monday off, and doing it on the weekend of the 23rd means it could be extended to a four day tour as Tuesday is a public holiday.

So register your interest, ideas, etc here. I'm off to see what pubs I want to check out along the way... ;)

As for Tasmania, the Penny nationals are on the 20th of February. The Penny century will be the weekend before that, so the 13th. Touring happens in the week in between.

We have the entire top floor of the pub booked for the weekend of the nationals. I know Stretch said he was going down. I'm considering it, I'd like to maintain my Penny ranking, if there is such a thing.

Le tour de Disneyland actually finishes in Tasmania, if you haven't already seen the topic?:

http://dhbc.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php? ... sc&start=0

PS: I want to do 200km+ back to back on the weekend of 5th-6th Dec as a warmup for the tour. Can go ride to some far far away land on Saturday, stay night there, and return Sydney on Sunday. Anyone keen?

I think the record is 55 days for 15000km around Oz. That's 272km/day!

Current Record for Around Australia is 51days SEE HERE

Anyway, i wouldn't mind doing some more touring, still deciding on my Tassie plans as it depends on whether i find a new job or not.

I'm up for some touring. It's much easier for me to take a Friday off than a Monday, but could probably manage it. Can't make the 23rd either - also away on a bike.

What about the weekend of the 8th? Anything wrong with that?

I had a quick look for breweries for Sydney to Nowra, Nowra to Bundanoon, Bundanoon to Sydney. There's only really 2 to stop at, 5 islands brewery in the gong, and Scharers in Picton (i know where it is now, should have checked before the fixie century). I noticed one at Goulburn as well.

Another option for the route would be to head up towards the Hunter Valley, but 3 days may not be enough to do that comfortably.

I didn't think that the Brewery at Goulburn was a Brewery anymore. You may want to confirm that before heading in.

From memory, the only claim to fame that the Goulburn Brewery has is from this ad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHyVqJTsefc

You can see it at about 18-20 seconds in. It is the tower in the background. You can see this from the bypass as you go past Goulburn.

Goulburn Track open is on that weekend, so I figured some people would want to compete in that. I wouldn't mind doing it myself.

Goulburn: a brewery and a track meet! That's not at all bad. Of course, it'd be a bit tricky to fit our track bikes into our panniers.

Well I have been thinking about how I could carry my track bike on the back of my touring bike. I think it could be done with a bob trailer... And how freaking cool would I look riding a steel frame tourer with a carbon track bike off the back of it?!

Listen up travellers! The tour committee discussed the three day tour plan last night, and locked in some dates.

We will begin the tour on Friday the 15th January, travelling from Sydney to Nowra and staying overnight in Nowra. The 16th will see us travel from Nowra to Bundanoon, and on the 17th we will make our way back to Sydney.

This means that those who are working full time and want to participate will need to get the 15th off work.

We need numbers for booking accomodation. So add your name to the list if you're in.

If you know of anyone who might not have seen the thread please pass on the information to them.

Do it!

Tim proved you can ride 350km with a backpack too... Albeit painful.

Or if you can make your luggage weigh no more than 200 grams I will carry it for you ;)

IIRC, Eugene did some of his long distance touring on a regular road bike with a makeshift luggage platform at the back. Of course, that calls for minimalist luggage for the trip. Otherwise you are welcome to borrow a seatpost rack I have that's rated up to 10kg. Might be ok for a 3 days trip.

Bundanoon Hotel is booked for the Saturday night. They are pretty flexible with the number of rooms that can be booked and it still works out at the same cost per person, so we've got three.

I am just looking at where to book in Nowra and I may need some more definate numbers for that. Are you definately in Jess, and James? Alex are you going to man up and do it on your fixie or what? ;)

If anyone has any recommendations of where we can stay in Nowra that would be appreciated. I've never stayed down that way myself.

Yeah, you know I'm in, even if it's the train ride down on Friday night, so try and make the accommodation near to the train station please. Last time I found myself in Nowra I was 16 and had fallen asleep on the train. I was very scared and am nervous at the prospect of finding myself there again, lost and confused.

Love your work Vic and am looking forward to the chats, and the ks.

Awesome :D I will look for something near the train station then. That at least gives me some criteria to work with.

Here's hoping there is no falling asleep on trains on the way to Nowra... Or bikes!

Ted's out, so just book for me Vic. Sorry, I should have mentioned this before.

Jess, if you let us know what time your train comes in we'll form a posse and come get you. Nothing can be that far away in Nowra, especially if we're on bikes.

I have to work friday, may be able to get out of working sunday and do a train thing, but don't worry about accommodation for me in Nowra.

Nowra train station is in Bomaderry just across the river.

Ok, we have two rooms booked at the Bounty Motor Inn for our stay in Nowra on the 15th January. It's technically in Bomaderry and is 2.4km from the train station. We'll come and get you when you arrive Jess!

There aren't any extra beds so if more want to come along closer to the time they'll need to book.

Nowra (well, it's actually Bomaderry technically) accomodation will be around $40pp (rooms are different prices but once added up and split across 6 this is what it works out to be)
Bundanoon accomodation is $80pp (includes breakfast)

I am working out the route and then I'll run it by everyone. Let me know if you have any requests.

We will be rolling out from Mick Mazza's at 7am on the Friday morning. Lindsay and Nada will be getting at head start, leaving at 6am, as Nada is riding as far as Wollongong before returning home (after a beer, of course).

If we leave at 7am we'll be in the gong by 11 at at the latest, is that too early for a beer? We can stop for a snack on the way down if its looking like we will get there too early.

Yeah we can definately stop for a coffee (or milkshake) and breakfast number two before Wollongong. I am only doing this so I can eat whatever I like, after all ;)

There is no such thing as too early for beer - but if we want to go to the brewery we will need to stall a little. I think they open at 12pm.

Bah, enough about alcohol and onto the more serious stuff...

What to pack? I need exact details/ list. Also... is there a way that the Bundanoon accommodation can be any cheaper? ie no breaky? I may have been offered a new better paying job, but I haven't started yet, nor been paid so I'll be carying what I can on me.

Wow, we'll look so tough at the train station on our bikes, lol. Thanks for coming to get me!

Good news Jessica, just got off the phone with Bundanoon Hotel.

You have a couple of choices, let me know what you want to go with (or anyone else who wants cheaper accomodation in Bundanoon)

1. $80 for room with ensuite + breakfast
2. $60 for room with ensuite (no breakfast)
3. $65 for room with hand basin only + breakfast
4. $45 for room with hand basin only (no breakfast)

As those who did the fixie century would know, breakfast is buffet style with both hot/cold foods and drinks.

Now as for packing, I'm wondering the same thing - since this will be my first tour! Perhaps some of the more seasoned tourers could help us out with a list?

Here are some route ideas

Day 1 - Sydney to Nowra 156.4km http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/377985

Just the standard route, taking the cycle path near Wollongong and assuming a stop at the brewery. I'm sure we can pad this out to hit the metric century mark.

Day 2 - Nowra to Bundanoon 84.5km http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/377987

I've included an optional climb to the Cambewarra look out, which is apparently worth the extra effort for the view (and coffee).

Day 3 - I'm thinking fixie century route, unless anyone has any ideas (perhaps what they would have changed after having done the century) - with the optional cyclocross turn off at Exeter. Cyclocross detour might be fun on a touring bike (not so fun on a fixie...). Depends on everyones tyres I suppose.

This is the route that James had drawn up for the fixie century - http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/australia ... 5138888189

I think we shouldn't go through Berry on the first day, instead turn off at Gerringong and head down Crooked River Rd to Coolangatta then across to Bomaderry. As for the second day there is no way to get from Nowra to Bundanoon without going up the massive hill. I've been told it doesn't have much of a shoulder either, so there will be no stopping.

On the second day we don't need to go into Moss Vale either, we can take the back street to Weria then onto Exeter.

Route is updated. I screwed up in the first version of Day 2 - it is actually much shorter coming in at 67.6km now. Day 1 is just over 161.5km.

Concerning the Bundanoon accommodation, I'm a bit poor at the moment too (have been overspending on my cycling habit - all these trips & entrance fees add up, not to mention the new frame!) I'm happy to share a lesser room with Jess. But am not too fussed either way.

Also, and I know you're not going to believe this, I don't eat breakfast. Not straight after I wake up anyway. A cup of coffee and I'm good to go. But I can sort that myself the night before probably.

Hmmmm I don't know if I would call that elevation sexy :?

I'll do the route for day 3 today when I get some free time (at work ofcourse). It'll probably be the same as the century route, but in mapping it out at least I might memorise the way...

How you can ride without breakfast is a mystery Camilla, but I will call Bundanoon and alter your accomodation booking when Jess gets back to me with her preference. I'm sure you can sneak in for a coffee at breakfast too.

Sadly as you may of guess I’m not going to be able to do the 3 day tour, both lack of annual leave and money dictate such a predicament. Hopefully I can do some touring of tassie and the pennies instead, as ill be down that way after racing the VIC Madison anyway.

Hope everyone has lots of fun and drinks plenty of beer for me.

Oh, that's a shame Alex.

I will endevour to solely satisfy your last request. My touring diet will consist purely of beer and jelly snakes. Mmmmmmm, I can't wait.

What if it's raining tomorrow? Do we just push through it? It occurs to me of the group going, I've only got Lindsay & Jess's numbers. Christain, Vic - are you going to rollers tonight? We should exchange details. And Miguel? Do you have contact details for anyone? If not PM me.

They were last spotted safe and well at 8.30pm stuffing their faces at Bombaderry Bowling Club. Lindsay was very sunburnt and looked like he had just come back from skiing as well as Victoria who had red arms.

Miguel was making pranks, Christian was completely speechless for once, and Jessica and Camilla were grazing on their food.

When I drove out of the car park I passed under the club internal cark and managed to get my bike wedged between the roof and the car racks

Luckily christian and I managed to get to get the bike down and luckily no damage and I had my regular ride through Jervis Bay this morning.

Anyone heard from them today

Yep, I spoke to Camilla this afternoon (a miracle, apparently, because there is no mobile reception at Bundanoon). Everyone survived day two up the hills, some people barely, but the party is intact for the ride home tomorrow, along the route of the Fixie Century.

Mmmm my arse hurts.

It took me until today to really get into touring mode. Actually one of Lindsay's little stories on Saturday got me there. Unfortunately my knee blew up this afternoon which made the ride very difficult. Particularly the Campbelltown to Sydney part. We were all going to flake out and get the train at Campbelltown but the trains weren't running - doh! It was a slow and painful ride home. Thanks for putting up with me everyone. Especially Christian who bore most of the burden.

Jess did really well for someone who was in heaps of pain on the first day. Camilla just flew up those hills - I never realised what a machine she was! I blew myself up on Day 1 trying to keep up with her and learnt my lesson after that. Miguel seemed to fly past as well. His 'excuse' for being fast was that his gearing was too high. Christian took on the job of looking after the sick and pain bound (me), which I am sure was a complete frustration right to the end. And Lindsay, ahhh, thanks for your support and wisdom - and your ability to sniff out beer in the weirdest of places is just amazing...

Lots of lessons learnt that will hopefully have me in better shape for Tassie. Thanks everyone :)

One very good and extremely fun ride, and as a first touring experience, unforgettable, one to remember, very good company, thank you to everyone for making this ride so incredible good, killer hills, beautiful views, and great food, Camilla took us to a place in Bowral where they had the best banana cake in the whole of Australia and even more I got my banana cake at the same time as all the others. Thank you again to everyone for this ride.

That was indeed heaps of fun! So many memorable moments, right from the start that was almost the end: the sight of a car speeding towards Christian as he flew through the round-a-bout down from Woolies in Marrickville. Luckily we were all wearing our brown knicks.

Thanks to Vic and Lindsay for organizing it, to Miguel for being a top touring buddy and leech removalist, to Jess for our lady chats, to Christian the tour mechanic, and again to Lindsay for one a much appreciated tow down the M5! And to Ted for having a cold beer and dinner waiting for me at the other end! Props also to Peter, who somehow managed to be there at the start and the end, cleverly avoiding Kangaroo Valley. Those are a couple of epic climbs I won't be forgetting in a while!

Picton Pics of some happy climbers. Well done all of you. Was great to catch up for lunch in Picton and hear the Tall Tales and True.

Roll on next tour.

Peter & Michele.
