Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club

Since I can't seem to find the bidon type I like anywhere I've decided to look into getting some printed with a DHBC logo etc. I'm expecting these to be sold for around the $10 mark, maybe cheaper. This will also make the club a bit of money. The ones I'm looking at are made by BOA (650ml), so they are made here but using a SureShot lid which is made in USA. With this lid the bidon will re-inflate itself, no annoying bit to push back in. Sorry, the image is a bit small.


So the question is, how many people would be interested in getting some DHBC bidons. You obviously need two for the bike, one for the office, one for the car, a spare.

I'm thinking red with a white logo. Suggestions will be taken.

I'd buy one or two, only because you can always have more bidons.

These days I've been using the Camelbak podium bottles as I like their ability to lock for transport and no need to open the top for drinking. Only dowside is they are a bit expensive.

Is it possible to get them in clear with a red logo?

I don't think that my black bike would look good with red bidons.

I would buy at least two.

I like the idea of clear bottles. Not quite as showy but I think a bit more practical when you want to see what's in your bottle.

Clear with red printing could be the go then. That way they won't clash. These bidons have a clear strip up one side so you can see how much is in them. Obviously this isn't the case with the clear one.

Id personally like black with red text, but in the end im not that bothered.

I have BOA bidon's in black (which is actually dark grey, but they call it black) and found they got a bit scratched up and crappy looking relatively quickly. I think it shows up more on the dark colour.

Light coloured just get stained. So clear bottles are best in the long run.

What about a white bottle?

I'm going to consider this enough feedback. I won't actually be taking orders on these, its not like they are expensive like jerseys. The initial order is likely to be for 100 bottles. They are going to be $10 each, I'm still waiting for some quotes to come in, but this will mainly effect how much profit there is for the club. The design is going to be fairly simple, just a red DH logo on a clear bidon.

I'll keep you all posted. I'll put up the graphic once its done.

Of course, all this depends on the committee for the availability of funds.

What about putting a small patch of colour on each bottle, so we can write our names on them?
I suggest this as it occurs to me that if we all pop a club bidon on a table at, for example, the Marrickville Road Cafe, it may be a little hard to remember which one belongs to which rider!

Pink? Are you serious. As it stands the bidons will be translucent with a DH logo on one side and the web address on the other. I've got the quotes and just need to make sure they won't change due to the design, then its full steam ahead. I think delivery is within 3 weeks of order.

Payment upfront shouldn't be required. As the first batch is only going to be for 100 bidons I expect them to go quite quickly, it'll be first in first served, with a limit on number per person. If they fly off the shelf then we can get some more made.

What's the limit per person??

I agree with T-Bone, considering that there are expecting to be 30 sold before you have even ordered, and as you say they are cheap to purchase, is it worthwhile to order a lot more initially?

We have nearly 200 people registered on this forum as it is, I have no idea how many club members we have, but at $10 each, I would imagine that lot of people would be willing to replace their bidons. I know that I am.

I think the next price break is at 250, They will work out a lot cheaper and the club stands to make more profit but there is a much larger initial out lay. As it stands we will only be making 50c a bidon if we sell them for $10, so if we go with the smaller quantity then we may have to sell them for more. The profit is much better on the larger quantity.

As the cost of getting 250 made will cost more I'll have to get this approved by the committee, someone has to pay for it. I'll get a formal quote for 250.

The artwork has been decided on, its not really open for debate, because if it was it would take 3 months to work it out. I'll post it up soon.

I would buy anything pink. Wot's a bidon anyway? I have never heard this word before, and can't figure out from the image. Is it one of the cycling slangs? It's not even defined on dictionary.com.

I guess there are people like me who haven't ordered because I have no clue wot you are talking about.

This is the bidon design we are considering, its a clear bidon. I don't think we need a specific spot to write your name as there is plenty of real estate for that.

They are a point and squeeze bottles. I have used these for a couple of years now and much prefer them over the older style.

Which is fine if you are riding, but if you want to take a bottle with you in your bag, it sounds like a leak waiting to happen if someone bumps your bag.

Nozzle design will be the decider. Or do they offer a choice?

I have used these type of bottles for a few years now, they don't leak, you can hold them upside down and they don't drip. They actually take a reasonable amount of force to get them to "let go" before you get water.

Obviously, if you put them in your bag, and then lean up against it, they will probably leak.

I can probably get half with the Sureshot lid and half with a normal lid. If you are going to use it on the bike I'd recommend the sureshot lid.

I have the normal lids on my current bidons, and they have leaked into my bag numerous times anyway. They require an abnormal amount of compression and checking to ensure they will not leak, so I would be inclined to go with the sureshot lids anyway.

I heard about these bottles. Have they been ordered and if so, what size?

They haven't been ordered yet, I've been a bit busy of late, will be following it all up this week. They are 650ml.

Update:

I signed off on the final artwork this morning, the deposit has been paid. This means we should have the bidons in about 2 weeks.

As for when and where you can get them when they arrive, I'll take a box down at the track and I can bring some down to the cafe on a Saturday and Sunday. I'll let you all know when this is happening. They will be $10 each, which is a bargain for these types of bidons.

Bidons are great! The shure shot lids are definately the best. So much easier to take a sip while you're trying to power up a hill with a sky rocketing heart rate

I grabbed mine last night.

Christian mentioned that some of the lids don't seem to fit properly (as is shown in the picture above).

When I bought two of these style of bidons several years ago, I had a similar issue, the problem is with the bottle not the lid, but it is easily rectified.

If you look at the lip of the bidon, you will see find that there is some residue from the mould around it. Both inside and outside. Simply pare this away with a sharp knife and you will then find that the lid will fit a lot easier.

On the ride home on Sun I almost dropped the new bidon as I tried to hold it by my teeth but there was nothing to bite on. Habit change instituted.

Otherwise the material and flow rate are good.

We are a long way off selling out, so no need to fear. Main distribution will now be at Tempe Velodrome on Monday and Wednesday nights. I'll look at binging them down to the cafe on another weekend, probably not until early December.

How can we get an alternate lid for the club bidon ie. Not SureShot? Are they available?

This is the first complaint I've had about the lid.

It's not a complaint but personal preference.

The problem I have with SureShot is that there's nothing to bite on like those cheaper nozzles, making changing hand positions on the bottle trickier.

So if there's a source for replacement lids, I'd love to hear about it.

Are any of these still available? I lost one on todays ride.
