James C. did a fantastic job of pulling us today.

At the servo we realised that our average was 33.2Kph, which ment that the record to Bestwick st was up for grabs.

James continued to do most of the work, but the lights didn't luv us so there was a lot of slowing down and speeding up. In the end the averages where;
Alan's speedo - 33.9kph
Jame's speedo - 33.6kph
Chris's speedo - 33.5kph

Record or not?

Shame that Alan, Chris and myself weren't fresh, we could of provided more support to James C.

Here is where it stands for me.

I record all of my training rides, partly for vanity and partly to see if where I was a while ago.

Now, my record to Waterfall solo is 2:25:32, that is from my place which is about 81km or so. I go through the big dipper both ways and return down Kingsway, so I go out and back exactly the same way. The average from that ride was 33.35km/hr.

Today, I obviously had to ride to the shop first, so that increases the distance. For me, a Waterfall ride with the club is about 84km if I don't return to the cafe.

Today, my time was 2:28:57, with a distance of 82.5km or so, subsequently my average was 33.21km/hr. So even if the record didn't fall, it was still bloody fast.

If you want to measure a record, you need to do it based on time, not average. Average is going to be dependent on the wheel size in the computer, which can very easily be wrong. Time is going to be the same regardless of the wheel size.

So, considering my form this week, who's up for the RNP next week?

James

James, I'd have to not race on Saturday to keep up with you at the moment. Great riding James.

Given your current form, the question should be "who are masochistic"?

The pole results so far favour that the record was broken

James, if Weiyun is weak at the knees with your current form what f'en hope do I have.

Maybe I should take my telescope to see if I can spot you in the distance.

James
I'm up for RNP next week as long as there are some other starters to even the pace out a bit. I think we should be encouraging people to do the RNP option rather than intimidating them with the threat of three hours of (in form) James torture!

Today was great.....if we leave on time and keep a good pace down to waterfall we end up being safer because; we don't get passed early on by the other bunches (who we often have to pass again on the 100kmh section when we've sped up which can be quite iffy), & overall pace was more consistent up the hills leading to less concertina effect.

Considering the number of lights we caught I'm happy to go with my avg (33.9), even if the wheel diameter setting is a bit optimistic (which it may be considering the other averages recorded).

And well done to Mike for taking out the loftus sprint and Chris for winning the Bestic consolation sprint.

Cheers,
Alan W

Ok, I'm signing up for RNP next Sun (famous last plan). At least I now have a decent light to use for 5:30am departure from home.

Actually its pretty dark now at 6.00am so all RNP starters must have lights fitted.

Yesterday I ran out of everything - first time ever my backside was like bone and aching, my thighs had nothing. I limped back, James and the bunch flew past me on Captain Cook bridge and James said (sic) "get up". well get up indeed.. - (thanks Joanne and partner for waiting for me - poor communication: I should of told Eric to pass on a message not to wait at Bestic St).

So go figure, 10 days off the bike, a little less weight, maybe, but no energy. However the start to yesterday's ride was pretty fast - and the evidence is that it was maintained overall.

RNP - that ride is enjoyable thru the park = less cars. But the provision above would be not to wait for me as I'll be slower. However, I agree other members may like to be encouraged to complete the RNP at their own pace perhaps?

Mick, so effectively you bonked. Right? Bonking out on a ride is a bazaar feeling.

Weiyun - is that the term? I thought if i bonked i would be nude - but i may of well been nude and jogged home the way I felt. indeed it was an odd feeling, i felt well, not sick, hangover or over exercised, just had zero strength in the legs. Feel asleep as soon as i got home, in me cycle gear to boot. Might have to get some weights tips from Mike. :P

Bonking is a term for hitting the wall, it basically means that you have run out of blood sugar.

When that happens, you are relying on body fat to supply you with energy, which is a slower process than using blood sugar. Subsequently, you have that dead feeling in your legs.

The only real cure for "The Bonk" is food of some description, preferably something with a very high GI. I nearly always carry a Gel for this reason, I don't often need it, but it is a good safety net.

When you are riding in the morning, most of your energy comes from what you ate the previous day. You need to try and eat a good low GI meal the night before to be properly fueled up for the next day.

I wasn't trying to be offensive when I rode past on Captain Cook Bridge, just trying to offer some encouragement. We have all hit the wall in the past and it is a pretty terrible feeling, you just have nothing left in the tank.

I thought that the bonk occurs when the muscle glycogen store has been depleted. I also understand that once you bonk, there's no short term recovery doesn't matter what you ingest.

Before my bike race on Saturday, I determined that crunchie bars had 7gms more sugar that cheery ripe's, both selling for $2.

Still didn't win though.

Of course what matters is not how quickly you rode, but how much style you had at the coffee shop

Adrian must of been channeling Michael Cowan who was wearing the same jersey down in Tassie. Rode in our winning Relay Team.
