That doesn't matter Tim, it's just so they can split us up to start in different bunches.

Signed up for 250 km, group A

Because I've not done a ride like this before, I've been informed by the ride organisers that I need to carry extra lights and a reflective garment.
Does anyone have any spare front/rear lights and a reflective vest or sash that I could borrow for the day?
Should I put this in a separate post on the forum too?

You can get a reflective hi viz work vest from a $2 shop that'll suffice. I'm sorting out a new rear light so I'll bring an extra with me that you can use if required. If anyone else has input please speak up because I'm no expert.

So how does this work from a navigation point of view (I am new to organised Audax riding) - how easy is it to find your way around the course if you haven't done it before? Is a Garmin / GPS / Smartphone on your bars with google maps open required, or are there waypoint markers?

I looked at the Audax Australia site, but they seem to be more preoccupied with lots of documents full of rules and arcane french certification organisations than the practicalities of getting from A to B.

There's nothing to find. Navigation is your responsibility. There are no waypoint markers or turn signs on a ride like this. (On the bigger Alpine Classic there are signs).

There is a link on the entry page to a map. You can download that into your Garmin and it will direct you - it does that on a 500 as well as an 800 or 1000. BUT - I always print out the map and the turn directions onto paper and stick that into my pocket as a back up. Or ride with someone who knows where they are going. However, that only works if you ride at exactly the same speed.

For most longer rides your iPhone won't last long enough.

200km Group A should do the trick.

I'm looking unlikely now. Still struggling with the back injury and I was clearly optimistic about my recovery speed. It's getting better, but not nearly as quickly as I'd like it to be. 9 hours on the bike might be a bit too much of a jump. We'll see what the physio says tomorrow! I don't cope very well with injuries, I'm going a bit mad!

Good weather - hopeful (although iPhone weather app keeps changing its mind)

I've did the 200k option on my fixie, its a good ride. Unfortunately there was an accident that day and the rider was taken away but ended up OK. The end result was a rather late finish due to the delay combined with a bit too much social at the stops

If anyone's feeling a little crazy, I'll be riding up to the start from Marrickville.
I looked a last years ride and it was 1 hr 40 mins elapsed to Hornsby.
I'll swing by the post office at 4.30am Sunday to see if anyone is there. Alternatively I'd be at the northern steps of the Harbour Bridge at about 5.

36k to the start off memory, didn't take 1h40, that's leaving about 20mins contingency.

Easy to catch the train home afterwards if you don't want to compete for road space afterwards

The trio taking part in the 250km option finished just inside the 13.5 hour time limit for Group A, although there was no-one left at the finish line to give them the recognition they felt they truly deserved.

Bownes and Timich were imperious, duelling for King of the Mountain points on most climbs, with Mayson a distant third.

And Bownes - as if a +250km ride with over 4km of pure climbing wasn't enough - rode to Hornsby and back as well, mockingly challenging the race organisers to come up with something more brutal next year to sate his thirst for punishment.

One of the great days out that you could have on a bike.
