Kurrajong Classic - 7th August

Entries for this race are closing on Sunday.

It's a great race, doesn't take long to get there. There's one hill to take note of, and the roads can be a bit dead, but apart from that, nothing to be concerned with.

Cheap road race as you don't need to pay for a weekend away

Well at least your were at mudgee! My training has been hopeless in the last two months.

I've been in contact with Eugene Shilter who has also entered. We'll probably catch the train and ride to the start of the race for a warm up.

Good to hear Eugene is racing. I've been meaning to get in contact with him, but i have a habit of forgetting to actually do it.

I'm out : (

I spoke to Eugene. He didn't sound pleased about being bumped into Div 2 since its his first race in a few years. I think he won or placed high in this race several years ago, so he may have reputation in the eyes of the handicappers.

Have a fantastic race everyone.

Eugene hasn't been on the club handicaps that have been sent in recently, so i'm pretty sure they've gone on his previous performances. We should be able to fix this up for his next race.

i'm also out and am gutted (my favourite race in the year). Spent the night waiting at the local medical centre resulting in having a soft tissue infection :!:

On a positive note, i will get to spend the time stripping down a couple of bikes in preparation for the new road racer for next season!

Rumour has it that Mr Wallman scored himself a 2nd place finish, narrowly missing the victory.

Writeup from 3rd place, sounds like there were a fair number of riders left for a bunch sprint
bugger! It was great fun, awesome course.
hehe nice tip, I got 3rd :)

It came down to a bunch sprint. On the first lap the climb wasn't that fast but we lost a few, 2nd lap the climb was faster and we dropped a few more, but there was still a fairly big group which was going to be hard to get away from, though speed was very cruisy for the majority of the time. Only a couple of break attempts were made which were shut down pretty quickly.

My plan was to smash it up the climb on the 2nd lap and hopefully pick up the kom, but when we got to the climb for some reason I was feeling pretty terrible. I was still 3rd over the top but had started to get sort of dizzy and my legs weren't feeling good at all. 5 minutes prior I had had my first ever gel, not sure if that had something to do with it. After the climb my legs started to feel weird as, I guess it was sort of cramps in my thighs (never had before), it wasn't painful but it was hard to turn my legs over, pretty strange feeling. Lucky the pace remained really pretty easy until about 5km to go when people started getting really twitchy. I was just trying to stay on one particular guy's wheel who looked like he'd be good for the sprint but then he tried an attack ~2km to go and was caught, so I tried to stay on some other wheels but it was all pretty crazy, the guy in front of me pulled out so then I had the wind in my face with about 500m to go, I kicked when another guy did, I don't have the best sprint in the world but it is slightly uphill which suits me, sprint was close and I got 3rd. The road was really bumpy and my rear wheel was jumping all over the place in the sprint.

Perfect course for the climber!
Normally yes, but circumstances being what they were I had to do it in a bunch sprint! How about that! In retrospect I was aggressive on the first lap and after I tried to bridge to one too many breaks we hit the hill on the second lap and my plan to win the KOM went out the rear along with myself. After whimpering all the way up I was last over the top and everyone settled in for the sprint. There were maybe 25 guys left by that stage and I felt like I had no chance, my legs were completely empty. After a couple of attacks in the last few k's we kicked from a fair way out, maybe 250m but I had no wheel, in the last 50m I was going a bit faster than everyone in front, reeling in 3rd, then 2nd, then first! I was pretty thrilled when we crossed the line and started flapping my arms about and behaving fairly inappropriately but when we got back to the Start/Finish and looked at the photo I'd missed it by about the depth of my front rim. Still pretty chuffed with second and feel like I'm starting to do myself justice on the road with my results over the past month.

Awesome result Wallman, I would have liked to see the photo finish and the one with you flapping inappropriately. Well done.

Are you looking at this one Tim?

I was a bit over-excited, in my defense the photographer obviously thought I'd won, the race caller thought I'd won, and the actual winner was on the opposite side of the road which made it hard for me to tell. If they hadn't had the photo finish I might have bluffed my way onto the top step!

Great photo too!

Jeez, i recognise the winner. I was warming up with him at Wagga before the crit (he was warming up for 3 grades after me!!!) and had a long chat with him. I should have kept some of the tips to myself. He's also one of Mike's offsiders (a spin instructor @fitnessfirst)

To anyone who has not done the Kurrajong I can highly recommend it.
and on that subject why is the Dinnerville so highly supported by the club and this one hardly gets a mention ? Both are great races and both fairly close to home. See all there next year.

P.S.
Well done again Matt.

Perhaps it gets overlooked due to also being the NSW road champs..

It is a nice course!
I had a good race despite cramping with 3k to go, l was 4th wheel :-) I had reduced power, the pace was picking up and l couldn't jump on :-( I finished solo behind the lead bunch. I worked on positioning myself to stay in the front half of the bunch on the 2nd lap, except for the hill where l was at the back :-( l had to work damn hard, too hard??, to move up and was in the 2nd bunch at the top. Soon after we merged with the lead bunch and then other riders joined. We then had a large-ish bunch for a sprint finish.
