History
HAROLD’S DREAMIt was a dream come true for Harold Strahley who had long fostered the idea of a great Australian cycling classic with all the characteristics of the big European events, a race that had the potential for world class status and would attract International competitors. He visualized a bicycle race linking the East Coast town of Grafton with the Northern Tablelands town of Inverell.
But it remained little more than a dream, for separating the town stood the formidable Gibraltar Range with the only way across a winding track built way back in the horse and cart era. Suddenly, the idea was converted to reality when construction of a sealed road over the Mountain Range began in 1960. Immediately Harold Strahley set his plans in motion.
The immediate reaction to the study was one of doubt, with comments of “it won’t be viable, it is too far, no one will finish, it would not receive sufficient cyclists support”; were some expressions of opinion. Undaunted the committee continued its work and within four months reported the race feasible, and backed its judgment with the sum of 1600 pounds sterling in support of the proposal.
Later Local Government, service clubs and the news media were involved and the stage was set for the first Grafton to Inverell bicycle race on Saturday, 16 September 1961.
Mr Jack Griffin, served as the race director for 30 years. He rode it and saw the race grow from a dream, to it being staged as an international race in the 80’s. His passion continues and we still have his presence on current race days.

Ok Camilla, I am not sure what drugs your dr has you on, but I do think that RACING 95ks would be just sufficient, and just little more intense than cruising in a bunch! I could never imagine trying to RACE the whole 228k! Whoa!

I'm seriously thinking of doing this one
Personally, I think that riding 95k's is sufficient, let alone racing - and 228k's IS RIGHT OUT - under any circumstances.Ok Camilla, I am not sure what drugs your dr has you on, but I do think that RACING 95ks would be just sufficient, and just little more intense than cruising in a bunch! OK, I know that this race is on the 12th September, so I thought that I would organise a couple of extra training rides for anyone who is interested.
Dates: 9th August, 23rd August
Route: Stanwell Tops - Ride to Waterfall, Descend turn right, through National Park to Stanwell Tops, Helensburgh, old Princess Highway to Waterfall back to Marrickville.
Distance: approx 110km
Time: 5:45am Mick Mazza's
This is a drop ride. The idea is that if we can average about 30km/hr, then we can meet up with the rest of the club at Sutherland (or earlier if we are lucky). There will be one regroup point, that is at the roundabout at Helensburgh. Everywhere else, the group will ease up to bring it back together.
Expect a pretty solid pace.
Here is a Map My Ride view of the course

Is anyone interested?

Having a blonde moment Tim, enlighten me
There would have been about 20 or 30 riders ahead of me by the end of the climb I was in the top ten coning up to the hill, this means nothing though as they were almost crawling?!
Hey I met the guy from our club called alex, he's heaps nice, good rider too, don't know where he finished yet, but I'm thinking miles ahead of me
