Dear all,

I've been away for a few weekends down at Jervis Bay. We've upgraded our fixed Caravan and purchased a weekend/holiday place at Erowal Bay. I've spent some good time with the roadies down there in recent weeks, and have ridden with many of them for about 4 years now.

I've been thinking about this for about 2 years, but finally proposing a weekend away for training and socialising. It would be from Friday night 24th of April, back on Sunday 26th.

We would stay in Erowal Bay/Bream Beach, on the eastern side of St Georges Basin, 4 kms from Hyams Beach on Jervis Bay.

I can probably get interested parties to book cabins at Bream Beach Caravan Park - these are decent but basic three bedroom holiday houses and very reasonable. probably about $200 to $250 per weekend for 6 to 8 people in total.

Saturday morning we would go through Boderee National Park (Officially part of the A.C.T. - Jervis Bay Territory) for an easy to moderate ride for 50kms or so joining the local roadies and Jervis Bay Triathlon Club who are growing quickly and nice guys. It would include going up some hill climbs of about 2kms and some ankle snappers - nothing like RNP, but much more like the climb up past the Loftus turnoff via the expressway (rather than via Sutherland Station route). So not too hard, but more variety than to Waterfall.

Highlights would include views of the Bay, going as far as Murrays Beach car Park (built as the foundations for Australia's first nuclear power site), passing Greenpatch, stopping right on the beach at Summercloud Bay, and winding past the Botanic Gardens to the Caves Beach Car Park.

Biggest risk for the peleton in this region are not potholes, not taxis, not coffins on wheels (utes), not glass, but rather roos. The bunch has a call for roos and we have to slow down.

It would be followed by coffee at Huskinson or Hyams Beach (tough choices!!!)

For those with full licences, we will then be heading 30 minutes drive to Nowra for one of the regular club road races at Nowra Velo Club at 2.30pm. I think its in handicap format and would be great practise for all the road titles James has put up for us to atttend. I've spoken with the club pesident and he welcomes us.

Saturday would be a night of socialising either a BBQ at one of the houses (maybe mine?) or off to the Huskie Pub or Huskie RSL for Two Up on Anzac Day. But we would ensure it was in moderation because........

On Sunday we will ride again through Jervis Bay, probably 70/80kms including some of the famous triathlon course. We may break the bunches into two or three groups so that each group can work at their own pace, much harder than the Saturday easy pace.

So...... please register your interest below. Based on numbers, I will then confirm the weekend and further details for accommodation.

Looks good to me! The only thing holding me back would be the fact I'll be going away the 2 weekends before as well.

On ya Nick,

Yes, its a well kept secret of the best place in the world.

Sshhhhhh, don't tell anyone, not even your wife......

Good to see interest by others. It would be good if we could get 20 plus riders for our inaugural training weekend since probably Al's time.

Guys - I checked out with Bream Beach holiday park tonight.

There are two cabins I can book. One # 3 is pretty basic but large. It has 3 Double Beds, 2 singles, and 3 singles for about $200 all up for the whole weekend. Linen must be taken by yourselves.

The other is Cabin M is $240 for weekend and two queens, and one room of 3 singles.

Costs would be split evenly for everyone staying.

Please start to indicate now if you are coming and what you would like eg:

1 Double or 1 single (girls room)

I will need to book the place in about one week.

I just did a bit of a count above with probably 14 or so interested at least.

We don't have to pack the cabins/houses out as there are another 4 or so we can rent. At $200 to $240 a house, even if only 5 or 6 people stay in each house, it would work out $20 per night per person. Maybe three or four houses will be the go!

Jo & I will have a queen please! BTW, there is no public holiday (for Anzac day) on the Monday 27th, which is good in a way as the traffic won't be as bad as I thought it would be (although the ACT do have a holiday). I assume we also need to bring food and that the cabins have cooking stuff?

I also texted Mark and Amy. Really looking forward to this weekend away and the ride. Yipeeeeee!

We can leave Camilla in a house by herself with the pigs and the onions. We will have masterchef Hickson cooking up a storm, although I do a pretty good breakfast.....

Thanks guys. Keep the confirmations coming in. I will start to book on the weekend, and we can add another house/cabin if more come forward.

Its a 2 and a half hours drive at about 180kms from Marrickville. Theres a big Bilo open at Vincentia 10 mins away (I'll check on trading hours at Easter. It used to be 24 hours. Not sure if thats so now).

Each cabin/house has kitchen etc. These are mainly 1970 style, but some cabins have been refurbished. I think our ones are basic but functional and the value is pretty good.

Any couple wanting something really nice can book holiday houses in Erowal Bay for probably $250-$300 a weekend, 3 minutes away from the Caravan Park, but I think its better we are all close together. For those options you can look on Stays.com.au if you want to go independent.

I have a prawning net for those who wish to prawn at Bream Beach for their prawn sandwich the next day.

OK, just back from Jervis Bay.

I've booked two cabins/houses and this will accomodate all the above, and a few more, so don't be afraid to list your name if you wish to come. I've got access to a third house as well, in need.

I'll post some more details up in the next few days, and people can start car pooling, etc, once I've done this.

I would be interested also in those intending to race at Nowra at 2.00pm on Saturday who have a full licence. I will be going to this.

OK here is my first draft of arrangements.

Accommodation:

Cabin 3.
Double - Geoff S and Marian
Double - Camilla,
Two singles - Amy, Michele
Two singles - Mark H, Mark L
One single - PeterOS

Cabin M.
Queeen - Jo & Stuart
Double -
Three Singles - Miclan, Nick B, Willian D

Michael C, Matt and James - you seemed interested but haven't confirmed. Please advise whether coming or not. thanks.

Have I forgotten anyone????

If you guys want to swap around (not the couples!!!) then you can work it out when you get there. The above is illustrative to work out capacity.

We still have spaces and can book another cabin/house easily. New names are welcome right up to next week. I also have a double bed in our caravan in the Park and also a house 1km away in need. Looks like it will be about $20 per head per night.

Places are basic, clean and have kitchens, utensils etc. But do bring personal stuff such as linen, tea towels, toilet paper, etc. They have blankets etc, but if you want to bring your doonas/sleeping bags, you are welcome.

There is a BILO which sells everything including meat, in the nearby town of Vincentia, open to 10pm every night. We will probably do a BBQ at one of the houses or my house on Sat night, but can all agree on proceedings after the Sat morn ride.

Training and Racing Schedule:

Saturday 25th-

Ready for easy 50 to 60kms ride as one group.

Depart from Bream Beach Caravan Park at 6.15am.

Coffee at Huskisson or Hyams Beach at about 8.45am.

Looking at the Nowra VeloClub site, the race is now on Sunday Morning.

Sunday 26th-

Now that the route is known, a much harder ride, broken into two groups of varying ability, covering same route, with option for additional kms (I can provide some add on options).

Club Racing. Graded Scratch Road Race. 9am to 11am. Sounds like about 60kms up and down a country road several times - similar to MacArthur Club race we did 2 years ago. I will confirm location, but believe it is as below. Its about 40 to 45 mins from Caravan Park. About 10 mins north or Nowra along route to Kangaroo Valley.

http://www.nowravelo.com/modules/piCal/ ... =2009-4-14

I will need handicaps so will use Heffron Park as yardstick. Let me know if you disagree.

Micklan - C Grade
Geoff S - D Grade
Geoff M - D Grade
Nick B - D Grade
Peter OS - D Grade
Mark H - D Grade
Mark L - TBA
Amy - D Grade or lower

Here are instructions from Waterfall to Bream Beach.

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&sour ... 38&t=h&z=9

The Office is open to 5pm Friday. They will leave keys in key box outside of Office after 5pm. We don't need to pay until Saturday, so we can collect cash then off everyone and settle then.

Greg and Carol are Park managers on 02 4443 0373. If you need to call them, say you are part of the group booked through Geoff M of Caravan 18.

Exactly 2.5 hour drive from Marrickville at about 185 kms.

I will be leave on Friday night about 7pm arriving about 9.30pm. I have room for one bike on my roof rack and up to three people. Let me know if you need a lift.

Stuart and I can fit one more bike, and 1 passenger. We have a subaru Impreza but bike racks to fit 3 on the top.

I will be coming back from Adelaide on the Friday, but I am hoping to get a flight that gets me home just after lunch, so hopefully we will leave by 3 in the afternoon. Michelle mentioned she may need a lift.

Do you mean Jo T here Geoff or is there another Jo I'm not aware of as Jo's last name is Troutman, hence Trouty on the forum. I can't race as I don't have a racing licence. This ride on Sunday for the non racers, I need more details as I'm a little confused as to where it's going?

Do you mean Jo T here Geoff or is there another Jo I'm not aware of as Jo's last name is Troutman, hence Trouty on the forum. I can't race as I don't have a racing licence. This ride on Sunday for the non racers, I need more details as I'm a little confused as to where it's going?
Yes, apologies to Jo T. There's only one Joey Troutman.....

Stuart, don't be too worried about Sunday route at this stage. It will be similar to Saturday, but with an extended 30kms option. All will be revealed when we ride on Saturday.

When I spoke to the girls on Wednesday night - Marian, Amy and Camilla said they would race as long as the grade was low enough (unless they have private messaged you and pulled out). Michelle doesn't have a riders license to my knowledge so she probably wont race.

I will take the spot if it's still available Jo and Stuart. I'll repay the favour and pull you up the hills Stuart! No racing licence for me, so a weekend of recreation.

No worries Michele, I have private messaged you. We can pick you up no worries. I can text or call you on the way home from the airport, my plane gets in at 2.30, so I shouldn't have too much delay getting home. Stuart will have every thing packed. He will definitely take you up on the offer to haul him up the hills !!!! PM your phone and address so we can come and get you.

Guys - this is really good race turnout.

Micklan - C Grade
Geoff S - D Grade
Geoff M - D Grade
Nick B - D Grade
Peter OS - D Grade
Mark H - D Grade
Mark L - TBA
Amy - Below D Grade
Marian - Below D Grade
Camilla - Below D Grade
Bill D - Belwo D Grade
Jo T - Below D Grade or lower

I've just got instructions from Nowra Velo Club. Don't forget to bring you racing licence. Without this, you won't be able to race. No one day licences will be available.

I've got the directions as well and its not north of Nowra as I indicated previously (I will edit that out of previous postings). Its just South West of Nowra, and probably 25 minutes from Bream Beach.

We will need you at the race start area/parking area approx. 30 to 40 mins before race start at 9.00am, so we can talk you through our course and race rules. The cost of entry per person will be $5.

To access the race assemble area, head in from Bream Beach/Erowal Bay as if you where heading back to Sydney, turn LEFT onto BTU Rd and this will take you to the Navy base. At the intersection (T intersection) you will see the Navy base main entry gates on your LEFT; you will need to turn RIGHT here!

Follow this road for approx 1.5km and turn LEFT onto Braidwood Road (Known locally as MR92). Follow this road until you come to an intersection on your LEFT, take this LEFT and follow it to the end where you will find cyclists and vehicle parking area. Look for a White Van in which Doug Holland (Club Secretary and Chief Commissarie) will be waiting to collect your money, and present you with a race number. NOTE – Before he issues you with a number and collects your cash, he will need to view and may want to hold onto your race license until the end of the race

Here is Google link although final destination is guess. It would be within about 1km from here, so follow actual instructions above.

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&sour ... 8&t=h&z=13

I will see when Cabins/houses need to be vacated on Sunday. It would be good if as many as possible go back for lunch - we could even go to the Husky Pub. Would be good if we don't need to vacate in morning. If we do, then my place 1km nearby can be the regrouping point.

Hi Mark L,
Sorry - I just gave our space to Michele so you just missed out. I think some other spaces are on offer - check out the forum.

Mark,

Both Mick and myself are leaving about 7.30pm separately and have space. I have roof rack spot for bike going down. Coming back, my bike (currently down there) will be on this. So you might need to find a lift back for your bike and you.

Let me know

Cheers

OK, some last minutes updates.

Great news is that we don't need to vacate the cabins/houses in the morning, but anytime later on Sunday arvo. This means that those leaving to go racing early in the morning, don't need to pack up. We can all come back to the cabins at lunchtime, and regroup and later packup.

The cabins/houses need to be left in a clean state after use. That includes dishes away, floors swept and rubbish taken up to the park bins. Otherwise a fee will apply.

Payment is not due until Saturday, so we can all work this out and make payment.

The Park Managers shut up shop at 5pm and whilst they can help out of hours for urgent issues, it shouldn't be necessary to disturb them. If anyone gets down by 5pm, they can collect their key (try to get a second if they have one) to the house they are using. Anyone arriving after hours should go straight to their house (see previous posting under this thread for assigned cabins/beds) to see if anyone else is there. If not, the keys are left in the 'key box' outside the office.

As people will be arriving throughout the night, make sure someone is home to allow others to get in.

Bring down stuff to cook in the kitchens for dinner that night, or do a Maccas at Albian Park Rail or South Nowra on the way. On the last 6 kms you will see a sign left to 'Vincentia' at a huge round about. Rather than head straight thru the roundabout towards Bream Beach, you could go left into Vincentia and get shopping stuff/breakfast foods etc at the BILO which is fully stocked with everything and open to 10pm.

Sat morn we leave Bream Beach at 6.15am sharp for our training ride.

We can talk about activities for rest of the weekend over coffee after our ride. Some ideas are:

Swim/walk along Hyams Beach (water has remained relatively warm)
Visit to Greenpatch
Visit to Murrays Beach
Stroll around Huskinson shops and drinks at Husky Pub, and two up on Anzac day.
Visit the A.C.T. (he, he. :D :D :D :D not many people know about this one)
People may just want to do their own thing as well. Dolphin tours are well worth going on, with high rate of spotting and drawing near pods.

We definitely want to do a communal BBQ (catering to all dietary needs) on Sat night and we can discuss organising this on the Saturday, so no one needs to bring anything down for this.

For those racing, dont' forget to bring your race licences or receipts. You should also bring fuel as the race is 60kms.

I think that covers about everything.

OK

I haven't read Wikipeida's page yet, so here goes

It was because Canberra wanted to have a Navel Base, and so they claimed Jarvis Bay so that Canberra has one.

On a side note, Canberra is one of about 6 world capitals that doesn't have an International Airport.

OK - Part of the Saturday ride will be to go to Murray's Beach car park, the foundations of Jervis Bay Nuclear Power Plant. You will need to put on special protective lycra.

Another interesting yarn.... one of the local roadies was telling me last week when one companion rider was fiddling with his speedometer on his forks whilst riding and did a somersault, breaking his collarbone.

They were near Caves Beach (yes we even take you here on Saturday). They rang the NSW amulance service, but when no one came in 30 minutes they rang back to say that they couldn't find the cyclists (at Caves Beach Newcastle!!).

He then tried to explain that Caves Beach was in the ACT on the coast, which confused the Ambo guy. They then despatched another ambo but when it didn't come and they rang back he said it was heading to the ACT from Goulburn.

He then asked for Huskison Ambo Depot direct number, rang them himself, and they arrived in 10 mins!!!

True Story.

I've got your address being number 22, x street. I'll ring you before I leave home. room for bike on my roof rack. Coming home we might need to put your bike in the back seat of the car, or get a lift back with someone else.

Australopithecus

The genus Australopithecus (Latin australis "southern", Greek πίθηκος pithekos "ape") is a genus of extinct hominids, made up of the gracile australopiths, and formerly also included their larger relatives, the robust australopiths (which are now given their own genus). The genus Australopithecus is closely related to the human genus Homo, and may be ancestral to it.

Hey we have winners in our midst at the road race at Nowra today.
D grade - 9 entries. The podium was dominated by DHBC riders. 1st - MarkL; 2nd GeoffM; 3rd MarkH; 4th GeoffS.

E grade - 9 entries. The place holders : 1st Amy; 4th Camilla with Jo finishing very close behind.

The wind was absolutely brutal. It was the first road race for many of our place holders.

The weekend was highly successful. We had a great time! Thanks to GeoffM for organising it. There will be lots of photo very soon.

Yeah AWESOME - thanks Geoff for organizing, every one had a top weekend!! Thanks to Geoff S Master Chef for his culinary creations, and Geoff M did a great job on the Barbecue at his palace. I think Marion's brownies were a success and kept every one well fueled. Every one chipped in at some point so it was well organised all round.

Note to Bill Micklans post:
Don't get into a trivia game with Micklan, he knows every bit of useless information as we found out this weekend. I think he spends his spare time reading wikapedia? Hence the reference to below and a thousand other facts we were surprised he knew.

All up a great weekend indeed. Enjoyed both days of riding and the cafe at Huskison was really Sydney quality with fast, cheerful service and excellent coffee. Didn't race of course but had a nice ride today with the non racers - I hope Jess's wheel gets better - how many spokes can one girl break?

Great crisp snaps Stuart,

Here's the official Nowra Velo Club Race Report. Looks like we need to take a regular group down so that their club can run an E Grade!

CARMELOTTI WINS A GRADE

Last weekends racing was held on the MR92 course in very windy conditions. Forty riders fronted the starter for the graded scratch format. With gusts up to 50 knots there was going to be nowhere to hide. Several riders from Dulwich hill turned up for a race and were a welcome addition to the C and D grade ranks.

A grade was off first into the mini cyclone, with only six riders it promised to be a difficult day. First to test the legs was Adam Rourke, as the bunch headed out into the teeth of the wind. He was quickly reeled in by Andrew Jarman. The group settled into a smooth rhythm with Matt Carmelotti and Damian Mason pulling strong consistent turns. The group had dropped Rob Hernandez of Illawarra in the first lap as Mason and Carmelottie showed no sign of letting up. By the start of lap 3 Roger Bird of Northern Sydney and Jarman were also dropped. With Adam Rouke providing good support Mason and Carmelotti continued to test each other keeping the pace high. At times the pace slowed to 20km/h as the head wind was unforgiving. All three riders continued to work hard right up to the final turn, with Rourke leading out Carmelotti jumped first putting a 5 meter gap on Mason, Mason chased hard narrowing the gap to half a bike length but it wasn’t enough as Carmelotti took the win with Rourke third.

B Grade rolled off with nine riders, this bunch was pretty even so it was going to be difficult for any riders to break clear. This didn’t stop several riders from trying to get away, but each time the bunch reeled them back in. For the most part the bunch stayed together each rider doing their best to find some protection out of the wind. Joe Pereira newly promoted from C grade was riding strongly as was Nathan Miller, both riders tried their hands at solo breakaways. In the end it came down to the bunch sprint and it was Henry Wakeford who got the jump on the bunch by going before the final turn. The bunch gave chase but Wakeford was able to hold them off for and excellent win. He was followed over the line by a strong finishing Mark Williams and Dave Morris.

C grade started with eight riders taking on the elements. Again this bunch was very even and there were very few attempts to break clear. The bunch rolled along solidly with no one prepared to chance their hand. Gary Bryce was seen on the front doing his best to break the stalemate, all to no avail. The bunch hit the finishing straight together and it was young Scott Thompson who again showed the older more experienced riders his speed. Winning by several bike lengths he even had time to sit up and coast over the line with Lawrence Byrne coming in a fast finishing second place and the hard working Gary Bryce taking third

The D grade ranks were swelled with several riders from Dulwich Hill. Down in the area for the weekend a large group of riders turned up to take on Nowra Velos finest. The strength of the wind was guaranteed to make life extremely difficult for the lower grades. This bunch worked hard with all riders rolling through keeping the pace high. The likes of Michael Thompson and young Jacob Stuart where flying the flag for Nowra as the Dulwich riders where holding their own. In a time only two minutes slower than C grade they crossed the line in yet another bunch sprint, Mark Lacey of Dulwich Hill proving too strong followed closely by Geoff Martin. Michael Thompson came home in a well deserved third.

With the extra riders from Dulwich Hill it allowed the rare running of an E grade race. This also gave some Nowra riders who would normally battle in D Grade a chance to go the whole race distance in a bunch of equal ability. It was this bunch which felt the brutal conditions the most. To their credit this bunch stuck together and raced as hard and enthusiastically as any on the day. Alyssa Glide and Tony Kerr fought hard for Nowra coming in an excellent second and third respectively behind Amy Vesty of Dulwich Hill.

The Nowra Club would like to thank the Dulwich Hill club for coming down and providing some excellent racing. Riders would also like to thank the Marshals for the day led by Phil Jones and race organiser Doug Holland. Racing next week is on Saturday the 2nd of May at the MR 92 course. The race will be a short course handicap. The race starts at 2.30pm with entries closing by 2.15pm.

Next weekend will see the running of the 25th edition of the Canberra tour. This multistage event has been a favourite of Nowra riders for years with this year seeing its largest entry ever heading over the range. Nowra will be represented in the following grades, A grade Robbie Williams, B grade Mark Fenner, Jason Cladwell, Matt Carmelotti and Damian Mason. D Grade Greg Molony, Phil Jones, Andrew Jarman, Rob Rix and Richard Oconnell. Womens C Grade, Jody De Souza, Nicole Otte and Alyssa Glyde. We wish these riders all the best.

It was a great weekend - the Sat tour de Jervis Bay was very scenic, with views and fun side rides to Caves Beach and Wreck Bay. It was excellent to hook up with the local riders for the tour - thanks Geoff for arranging that.

Sat night was a very tasty BBQ, thank you to the iron chefs. Local kangaroos at Geoff's were a bit testy; even though a possbile hazard they just lounge about the postcode on front lawns & nature strip.

The race - well very windy. - C grade was a small group and one rider and I got dropped on the 2nd trip up the hill. Well done to the winners & bunches who pretty much finished together.

Geoff - thanks again for organizing the weekend very enjoyable :D

Mick Australipethicus.

Where does it fit into the training camp weekend.

Is it a Kangaroo

Please explain?
Ok so when we were on the training ride/tour de Jervis Bay, Trouty asked micklan what he saw? - micklan advised that the inhabitants of the camping ground were possibly part of the australipethicus group, also identified were the blue receptacles for their waste items. The camping ground had a healthy coverage of Scleria http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scleria and coastal eucalypts. http://www.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/science/cu ... cyperaceae

The Thai rice porridge was a topic in conjunction with Sat nights iron chef which was an episode with a starch component as the challenge ingredient - rice porridge possbily being one of the best pre-ride energy foods known to mankind...Trouty considered this to be incorrect

ends...

Not much difference between C and D grade, was it one of those situations in C where they went fast slow fast slow while in D the pace was steady ?

Mike - I think you would love the course. I was told that we did the 42km course and it is extended to 96 kms on other occasions. No wind on a fair day, it would also be a quick course. There is a hill; about 1km long, of course you do come back down the hill 3 times and with the westerly winds yesterday this was completed at I'd say close to 70kmph. My speedo didn't work so others will have that data.

C grade was a small group, there was advantage in tucking in behind the leader, there was surging, but then again I didn't finish the second half of the race...D grade av I heard was 32kmph, for a 42km course. (this computes with the times). Now thats very good av in those conditions.

Oops - That's Jo's new "hand built by bloody slow Italian elves" track bike that she picked up late Sun arvo - I took some pics for her and they got uploaded with all the others.
