Ride for Life - Vintage Scratch Race, Sunday 17 Nov, Heffron

Hi all

The organisers of the Ride for Life are holding their 9th event this year at Heffron Park on Sunday 17 Nov.
The DHBC 'Valley Wheelers' have been invited to organise a 'scratch' race for this event. Would like to get a large contingent of red jerseys on the day. I believe this will be a unisex event.
While we are still in the planning stage, I've been told the race will be 30mins long. Only bikes pre-1986 will be allowed and you will need a CNSW gold 'racing' licence to participate.
Any takers? :D

The 'Ride for Life' organisers asked us to come up with some guidelines. Just emailed this to them.

1. bicycles made before c. 1990.
a. frames made before c. 1990
b. groupsets made before c. 1990
2. No 'brifters' allowed (incorporated gear shifters and brakes), downtube shifters only.
3. No aero bars or other bicycling equipment later than c. 1990 allowed.
4. Toeclips and straps are encouraged but not essential. Clipped pedals acceptable.
5. No fixies and all bikes to have 2 brakes. (for safety reasons)
6. Steel and lugged alloy bikes only. Lugged carbon fibre up to 1990 is acceptable.
7. All entrants are encouraged to wear 'period' cycling clothing.

Think you might have a typo in there Marc, if the bike is no newer than 1990 and the frame no older than 1990, then the bike must be exactly 1990

Wheel sets? Are they able to be on old hubs with new rims and spokes?

I am a tentative at this stage, hoping to firm up unlike my offseason belly is

No other takers?

Info about the race is trickling through today.

The Ride to Life organisers say they will take a look at entries later this week and make a call on scratch vs. handicap by the CNSW gradings of entrants. They have allocated time to the event, however they say they will more likely go with laps, or time + laps. The RBCC are assisting with commissaire duties, so they would deterrmine the number of laps, again by grading.

Looks like our Vintage race starts at 11am and lasts 30 minutes: http://www.rideforlife.org.au/race-info/

I was originally told as paid up participants we are also entitled to enter any other race on the day.

Pending the battery, I will be turning up in a car that will be a decade older than my bike! Hopefully the scrutineer will be kind :)

Hi riders,
I just got an email appeal from one of the organisers of the Ride for Life event. Apparently they need more riders in the other graded races. Apparently not enough riders. I think the vintage race might have more riders than expected. So if anyone is up to some graded racing on the side, please do.

I'm semi-keen at this stage. I'll see how the day pans out for me.

Also Marc, since you are the one who wrote the guidelines for this race. Does my 80s frame single-speed convert (horizontal drop) bike qualify?

Jon, as per my PM, your bike should be okay.

Is anyone taking photos during the vintage race?

Does anyone know if you just show up for the graded races (ie self selected grade) or is it determined by cnsw?

Not sure Simon. The last time I spoke to the organizer! he seemed keen to encourage the vintage riders to participate in the other graded races. Something about not having enough competitors. From that I gathered we (vintage) are a rather large bunch in comparison.

Seeing they are a bit keen, it might be easy to get into whatever graded race u want.

The program:

Time Event Race Time
8.40am. Men B Grade. 50 min
9.40am. Juniors U13 / U15 (Boys and Girls). 30 min
10.20am. ***Men C / D Grade***. 40 min
11.10am. Vintage 30 min
12.20am. TAFE. 60 min
1.20pm. Men A Grade. 70 min
2.30pm. Family Ride. N/A

A total of 13 riders (10 DHBC) turned up for 6 laps of the 2.04km course. In attendance were yours truly, Lindsay, Marc, John Mason, Simon Berry, Ron Webster, Alister, Ray Patton, Carol Rosier (doing her very first race) and Roger Webber (DHBC member and occasional visitor south of the harbour). Peter B also signed up, but sadly yum cha appealed more than a soggy morning at Heffron. The track was very wet, so we took it cautiously through the corners, but we were still relatively quick on the straight bits. I think we added a bit of colour to the proceedings and the DHBC share of the podiums was pretty impressive.

Image

A joint C/D grade race preceded the Vintage race, with our very own Simon Berry (2nd) and John Mason (3rd) on the podium.

Image
Juniors race was won by another DHBCer, Rory - sorry no photo. :(

Event MC Paul Craft interviewed all the riders on track before sending us off in a handicapped/staggered start. Here he speaks to Jimmy with his 1940s Healing road bike.
Image

No photos of the actual race yet - hopefully someone took some. A Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club clean sweep - 1st John Mason (1980 Blom), 2nd Simon Berry (mid 80s unknown) and 3rd Marc Rerceretnam (1985 Raleigh Team Panasonic).

More photos and text from Marc. He's currently unable to post in this part of the forum.

John Mason and Simon Berry receiving their 2nd and 3rd placing prizes for their well deserved wins in the C grade race.

JohnJ discussing tactics in the rain prior to the Vintage race, but no one apart from RogerW listens .....
Note that Lindsay's race number is 531....

L-R: Alister, John, Ron and a non DHBC rider with his pristine 1983, Qld-made 'Rapallo', just before the start of the Vintage race.

DHBC clean sweep on the Vintage race podium. John Mason, Simon Berry and Marc Rerceretnam.

Everyone couldn't but admire Lindsay's bicycle loading skills in his new, and very French, Renault Kango van. Was told he bought the van to house his white TdF, mid-70s Peugeot PX-10 (seen on the extreme right).
