So there was a crash at Waterfall. I was part of it but came off with only bruises, scrapes and sore hands. Need a new helmet. Nick (shoulder or collarbone) and Jason not so lucky as they were carted off in the ambulance. Wishing a speedy recovery to them both.
Stay safe people. Stay vigilant and watch the gap. Crashes happen very fast.

Yep, ditto! It was an amazing ride! Thanks so much to the ride leaders for getting us to Waterfall and to those who led us through the RNP. Also, it was wonderful to see how the group rallied together to assist Jason and Nick after the crash. Wishing them a speedy recovery. Stuart - hope you are also ok.Thank you to the guys who guided the group of us through the RNP - you did a great job keeping the pace inclusive and the ride enjoyable. While I found it quite tough it was very satisfying!
Cheers,
Rajiv
Sorry to hear about the crash.
Get well soon Jason and Nick.
(edit) ... and Stuart too.

Spot the difference;
Black hole
Bundeena Ferry
That makes 3 attempts to get there.
I'm available Sunday 18th August for another ride. Do we want to make a 4th attempt at Bundeena Ferry or do something different, like 'The Wall', or a suggestion of yours?

The Wall for mine. Ferry appears to be jinxed...
For what it's worth .... Adventure rides used to be slow, meandering, inclusive events. They were at a genuine C25+ pace and could take all day (especially if ferries were missed). This ethos seems to have been replaced by a fast, large bunch training ride pace and mind set.
Time to reset? Maybe those wanting training rides could organise as such ....

Or when the Bridge to Bridge speedboat race is on on the Hawkesbury so we get to snooze on the bank for a couple of hours while watching it.They were at a genuine C25+ pace and could take all day (especially if ferries were missed).
As someone who is transitioning from c25s to c28s, I found the pace just manageable and certainly enjoyed the challenge to step up. Those who led us through the RNP also did a great job of waiting for us at the top of the hills and even riding back down to see where we were at.For what it's worth .... However I think I would've struggled with the pace to Waterfall 6 to 12 months ago. I therefore tend to agree with Stuart that the adventure rides may need to run at a slightly more relaxed pace if the intention is to be inclusive of newer or less stronger riders.
Rajiv
Despite what I just said, I'm keen to give the infamous "Wall" a go too!

Illness stopped my riding on Sunday but I must admit the presence of riders well beyond C25 gave me concern! The male ego has trouble coping with "slow" ... I am sure I would have suffered rather than enjoyed the ride.

I think there is a misunderstanding here. The pace is set by the slowest rider, so how fast it is, depends on who is riding. Usually myself or another quick rider will be at the rear and will advise the bunch to slow down if a rider is unable to keep up and/or assist the rider.
Anyone know if Jason is out of hospital?Any updates on the condition of the lads?

The Wall - 6am Sunday 19th August
Last year was the first time we ventured up this one. Its got some bite in it at 20% but then it levels out to 10%.
The route is Marrickville -> RNP Audley in -> Otford pie shop (probably grab a coffee) -> helensburgh -> Waterfall -> Marrickville
Pace is that of the slowest rider and the quicker riders will challenge themselves on the hills.

I may or may not turn left after the wall, head down to stanwell park then turn around and head back to waterfall through the park. It's only a slight maybe but a maybe none the less.

The legends are true! Treat Audley Hill south and the Wall with respect! Great ride guys. Thanks to everyone and especially ride leader Mike who dragged us home from Waterfall.
The only two that worked, next time we'll have to take a professional photographer along

Hi Mike. I liked your idea of an adventure ride that left early, headed a long way out, then caught a train home. Much safer than coming back into Sydney during mid morning peak hour. In that vein i really like the thought of heading north - via the gorges and then beyond? Is there a route that could make that work? All best. Andrew

Hi Andrew, agree its good to ride out of Sydney early and not so great to ride into Sydney later
I'm thinking of a ride to Wisemans ferry, grab a feed then onto Wyong and train home. Need to investigate the feasibility of it.
Also looking at the feasibility of putting on a ride for the C25ers

Excellent indeed! An adventure ride for C25ers?! Excellent idea. Thanks Mike.
Wyong via Wiseman's sounds grand.
http://app.strava.com/routes/20275 I think Strava's elevation data for some of this is kaput but the rest of it looks good.
Has anyone ridden the Wiseman's Ferry Rd?

Mike has led two adventure rides through wisemans ferry (I've been on both). It's fine. Not awesome riding but good.
I have done all of that except central mangrove to wyong.

It's fine.
Actually, better than fine. The section from wisemans to mangrove mountain is fantastic!
And I'm sure yarramalong valley would be awesome.
I was tempted to do that rather than ride back to sydney.

Whose up for an Adventure Ride this Spring?
It's been a while. I'd like to revisit Mike's Windsor ride (minus my fixie). But there are lots of other possibilities. Maybe a 3 gorges for those who've not done it before?
In essence, I'd like to see this endeavour re-invigorated. It's lots of fun & a great way to meet people/challenge yourself. I'm proposing November Sunday 23 as a date (because I'm away before that).
Thoughts?

Windsor sounds Fab.
Other places in my mind:
- Macquarie Pass, train home
- Headlands, all of them, Bundeena, ferry, Cronulla, Kurnell, la per, south head, water taxi, north head, Barrenjoey, ferry, Box Head , train home
Might need to do that one in two separate days.

There's 2 Windsor routes; Is that 100k or 160k? IMO 160k is too far for an inclusive Adventure Ride i.e. too far for me.
1. the long one that goes via Wisemans and is more than 160k off memory. The early part of the ride is hard, going over north side hills. From Wisemans its fairly easy following the Hawkesbury, only one big hill of note.
2. the direct one where we ride direct to Windsor have a quick breakie then that the road to Springwood, stopping for a photo op on the great view. That's the one you did before Stuart. What was the total distance? 90 - 100k ???
I'm happy to do either

Is that something that involves a bike ride followed and/or preceded by a swim and a run?
Have a great ride,

So what's the decision?
1. Blue Mountains 3rd route (100k ???) Which Stu is keen on. Marrickville -> Windsor (coffee at the bakery) -> Springwood (beer) and a train
2. The Century, actually a little more (180k ???) Not Stu's cup of tea. Marrickville -> Wisman's (coffee and brunch) -> Hawkesbury river -> Windsor and a train

Who rode back last year? (while the rest of us enjoyed beer and caught a train)
The M5 is still a write off due to road works. Definitely recommend a beer and a train trip for the return run.

laptop in the back packI'm on-call for work. Can't make it.
The newsletter reminded me that we've got an adventure ride happening on Sunday!
We need to decide which route we're doing. Mike, are you able to be ride leader either way (i.e. be in charge of directions)?
Stuart, did you want to come? In which case we could do the shorter route if you preferred.
