skin suites...

G'day guys we're aiming to get skins suites in the next order for the track and since it's a one piece garment, i want to have writing on the knicks as well. Because i tend to find in photos and really in general that is the most visible place for writing. I've got a couple of ideas, which are basically how to put the writing on.
Here's some photos, the original skin suite of Al's from the 80's which is the motivation behind the project and a couple of ideas. I think simpler is better but it you add lines round the backside and down both legs like most of the pro teams have, it makes your backside look bigger or so the theory goes so you look strong. I think the red and black writing in the photo is probably best as it maintains the basic colours whilst being easily readable. So if we had the writing down each leg as is and the website across the backside so other riders from behind can identify us from behind as we be beat them over the line.

I suggested to Lindsay on Monday to put the 4 circles of DHBC down the sides of the legs
That would be much nicer.I suggested to Lindsay on Monday to put the 4 circles of DHBC down the sides of the legs

If you put the circles down the sides, will people be able to identify? That's the only issue & why writing is so effective, it can be picked up by a camera really easily... & you've already got the cirlces down the side of the jersey, would we want them again? maybe in in red rather than white?
I was talking to Grant this morning & we can get club knicks as well if people are interested. Just don't put too much on them, so that they arn't too different from plain black knicks if people still want to wear plain black.

If I understand the potential deal with the kiwi concern, we have as many different types of articles as we want, as long as we get 100 units. Lindsay can correct me on this.
So if thats the case, then we can do different vesions if so desired.
I'm being thinking black with the 4 circles down it. We are clearly identified on the tops anyway. There's no reason why the skin suits couldn't have something different.

Here's my impression of the letters, I think having the slogan rather than the straight letters with circles down the sides is better & the colours had to be inverted to suite the black.

We are clearly identified on the front and back but on the track the audience is watching from side on and side on identification is very important. So the crowd don't walk away saying gee those riders in red and black were great tonight, but who were they?

That was quick, so it's not just on the bike that your quick Simon.
It's much more identifible from a distance than plain text, due to the larger letters.
I'd loose the wiggly line and have the letters above each other (top to bottom). The circle could probably do with a bit red around it.
Anyway, we can agree to disaggre.

You wouldn't want the letters top to bottom because the only time your leg is really vertical is when your off the bike walking or standing. When your riding and generally on the track in the saddle, the writing is always going to be horizontal, look at all the pro teams kits...
The letters by themselves would look a bit dull really, we want to move forward in time, not backwards since the 1980's AL's skinsuit. But what will the letters DHBC mean to a spectator from queensland or most of NSW? the words Dulwich Hill leave no doubts?

Simon, don't you do a lot of standing around? I mean while they are doing all those presentations for your victorys that is.
With a membership number of 50, do we not have a graphic artist in our midst? Chucking a few letters here and there is pretty basic and I think we can do better. The kit will be our branding and I think it is important to have it look the part.

If someone wants to design something that would be ace...I just don't know how much time we have till the next order? Grant's pretty keen to go ahead...

Simon, your argument about the writing being read sideways is flawed in your case, cos your cadience is so high, you legs are just a blurr

More experience than brotherly love...
Here's a few examples of what others are doing..
NSW, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania & QLDs not there but is the same...
http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/files/pho ... niors7.htm
On the world level; Russia, Czech, Australia, Cofidis for France, Stada for Germany, Rabbobank for Netherlans..
http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos/2007/ ... ery-wtc071
& they all have plain simple writing which is easily readable, no fancy logos or anything complicated, So that you can easily identify who's who. Alot of the local Sydney clubs are the same, i just can't find good photos. But you can look at the photo gallery in the cycling NSW site...
So i think that straight writing is the most effective & best...

Perhaps the real problem is that text on the side of black pants just doesn't cut it. Out of the states, Victoria is the worst.
The other thing we haven't discussed is the background colour, on the NSW ones, they have continued the light blue theme down the side, while retaining black on the inside.
What if we had a red stripe down the side and was careful with the amount of text? "DULWICH HILL" is a lot of letters, but perhaps it could be done with the correct font.

The real problem is the more text or design you put on the knicks the more you lose the red black theme. The Victoria skinsuit is still easily readable...
Here was my original design but it no longer looks black and red...

That looks good. But I would suggest making the strips bolder, or it'll just vanish at distance. Some thoughts in the selection of font will also go a long way.

I wasn't able to choose the font with paint because it won't write vertical, so i had to do it by hand but yeah it would be no problem when it's actually done...
Yes, I understand. But just for reference, a bolder font for these usually works a lot better than a thin bodied font. Also the size, I'd say that the lettering at on the tail won't be very evident for its intended purpose.

Lindsay suggested changing the shoulders as per what you have as the detail in the existing jersey was a bit lost when they wrinkled.
The different font and line looks much better. What would it look like with red underneath it?
BTW, the way around your vertal font problem, is to rotate the picture 90deg, add the text and then rotate it back.

Looks to be a nice design, we just need to graphics expert to do some work on it.
Hopefully Lindsay or Grant can let us know what else is available, as there may be some other items people would be interested in, though we should probably still limit it, as we probably should lock people in to racing in specific stuff. So probably best to stick to plain black knicks, except for the skinsuit. Though long sleeve jerseys would be good (which i think is in the plan), but i'm not really sure if we'll be needing anything else. Maybe a wind vest or something similar.
