2012- ‘Tempetation’ Fixie Century No.6 – ‘Conquer the Castle’ 21/10/2012

Hello all DHBCer’s,

The year is progressing and the time has come to book yourself in for another year of fun as we once again get set for the annual –Tempetation- fixie century in 2012, to be run on the 21/10/2012 pending accomodation booking.

This year marks the sixth edition and as such we have decided to mark this special occasion we will have a special change of route and starting destination. Dubbed ‘Conquer the Castle’ in 2012 we will ride from Newcastle to Sydney, starting in Stockton down the coastal road to Tempe. Between Ettalong and Palm beach this will require a short ferry trip, meaning riders will need to stick sharp to the timing schedule and it will be more important than ever to keep to together in one bunch.

Image

Course:

New course:

• Beginning is Stockton at 7:00am this year the ride will be able to commence much earlier than previous years as food stops will be available earlier.
• Breakfast will be schedule at 7:30am in Newcastle.
• Morning tea will be at the 50km mark in the Swansea area, which will be a brief half hour stop for a cofee.
• Riders will need to arrive in Wattsgate by 12 midday to catch the ferry to Palm Beach. This ferry trip will take approx 30 mins putting the group at Palm Beach for lunch.
• After Lunch the trip will resume with 50kms left to travel.
• We will travel down the backstreets through the heart of Sydney finishing in the iconic Tempe Velodrome for the sixth ‘tempetation’.

• Must be 18 years of age and fit enough to complete the designated distance and be able to prove so if haven’t before ridden a fixie century.
• If any known medical conditions must consult your General Practitioner on your health and be cleared to start.

Bike requirements:
• All bikes must be fixed with one single gear. Gears can be changed if a flip flop hub is available during ride. No freewheels allowed.
• All bikes must have 2 working brakes and enough brake pad to be safe.
• Steel is real baby.

Ride Rules:
• All riders must comply with road rules at all times.
• All riders are responsible for their own safety and if not up to the distance must get themselves home.
• Riders must comply with bunch rules and ride rules when needed.
• Australian standard helmet must be worn at all times, by all riders.

Just to note, the road from Stockton to Newcastle proper includes quite a dangerous bridge where a cyclist was killed a couple of years ago. Perhaps might be worth considering the ferry from Stockton to Newcastle?

And do we have a driver? My sister could be convinced if Kevin would prefer not to do it this year.

I've never come because my fixie won't accomodate a rear brake. But this year I'll look into whether P Bundy can do something about that or maybe I'll look for an old frame to build up for the day.

Dad has roof rails on his car so if anyone has a bike roof rack that we could borrow it might assist with things?

Two questions:
Is there a 'I would like to come and don't need accommodation' option?
What does one have to do to prove they are 'fit enough to complete the designated distance'?

You can just start a list that is titles 'I would like to come and don't need accommodation' .

I'd say if you can do Waterfall fixed and not be dead at the end then you're fit enough.

Vacancy created in the #11 spot as I now find myself booked on a holiday to Italy on this date. It will be like my own little Giro.
The next person to join up, please use that spot.

Hey! I saw that!

I blame my crappy Greek Sim card, which only worked randomly while in France, normally when everyone else was fast asleep at 4am. Not that I wanted to talk to you people anyway, being in France and all!

Hi all,

Due to complications in accommodation and the ferry ride, the fixie century will return to Bundanoon this year!

I have booked in 24 spots at the bundanoon hotel for Saturday the 20/10/2012. To confirm your spot rather than paying me you must ring up the Bundanoon hotel and pay directly for your spot before the end of July or else it will be lost!

Cost: most rooms are $45 per person for those who get in early or $50 for those who are late and only fancier rooms are left.

Call 4883 6005 & book in your spot! the reservation is under my name Simon Llewellyn

Once you have book copy and paste your name to the list.

If you are a couple or a single female please advise them as special rooms are allocated for you!

Simon, I took the liberty of booking dinner for us all at the hotel for Saturday night when I paid for my accomodation. They asked if you could confirm the booking.

Cheers Chris. I phoned them today & we are booked in for dinner for 20 people at present.

They told me 15 people have now paid which means there is 5-6 people left to pay at least. Could people please pay ASAP!

I was thinking,
jump on the train @ 9:38 from wolli creek, transfer at campbelltown and head to bowral. arrive @ 11:40, go to the pub for lunch.
then ride out to Bundanoon, via the newly re-surfaced velodrome!

a nice easy 30 or so km.
who else wants in?

I'll be driving down with the driver at this stage...

So it means that, when riding from Mona Vale station to Bundanoon on the Saturday, at a pace I am struggling to keep up with, I don't have Toff in my ear freaking me out that the pace on Sunday will be much quicker (a la last year).

...except it's a Bianchi Sei Giorni: you can mount a front brake, but not a rear brake. The rules of the ride require two working brakes, so the bike doesn't pass muster.

I might ride there again, just no random back road route from Picton this time. I'll decide closer to the time.

Sorted! Craig's had to withdraw so I've got his room. This'll be my first decent ride for ages so it may only be a half century for me, but the Bundanoon-Gong section is the best anyway. And I've got this weekend to train, so who knows.

No breakfast for me thanks, and presumably Craig's got a place at the dinner table already reserved that I can also take over?

Yee-ha!!!

Yep, sorry to say, I'm a late withdrawal due to some unforseen work committments.

I hope you all have a great day. And camilla don't be too concerned if there's a knock on the door late at night from someone dressed in a gimp suit - just let them know I changed my mind!!
