Apparently a gent born circa 1930 used this bike as transport when he was an apprentice. His neighbour passed it on to me in 2010, then died, so I can't follow that up any further.
My internet research back in 2010 revealed no trace of "Eclipse Cycles, Campsie", the Sturmey Archer hub was 40's, the shifter 30s. It has monitor brakes, Bell saddle.
With those lovely bullhorn bars, the pinstripes, etc. I'd like to think it was a 1930's racing bike - but maybe it's just a 1940's mock-racer.
It lives 3 metres up a wall in my kitchen. Art. That's what it became when I realised it's aesthetically irreplaceable pinstriped wheels are hopelessly rusted. I just replaced tyres + greased bracket head then hung it as found.

Pictures aren't showing up for me either. :(

I've consulted my lists and can't find any trace of Eclipse up to 1939. They were definitely in existence by 1946 and in 1949 were trading as Eclipse Cycle and Electrical Supply at 307 Beamish Street Campsie. They were still trading there in 1963, but had disappeared by 1970.

From memory, you mentioned that the bike has a Sturmey-Archer quadrant shifter. I think this went out of production in about 1938. If this is original to the bike it can't be much later than the 1940s. What date is on the Sturmey hub? The serious racing fraternity in Sydney frowned on Sturmeys. Likewise the saddle, a racer is more likely to have used a Brooks B17 (or maybe a Mansfield Ormond) than a Bell.

My guess is this is probably a semi-racer probably from the 1940s. You might want compare it to my 1952 Healing, complete with Monitor Speedster front brake. The Healing is a classic semi-racer, and is built out of Reynolds 531.

Drew,
By the looks of the URLs of the images you tried to post you are using a Mac. Good for you. Bug unfortunately you can't (that I've seen) upload images to the forum. Instead you'll need to follow Marc's advice and post to photobucket.net, or even better, imgur.com or flickr. Then link the images using the IMG tag with http attribute.

Cheers

Drew - se this post for information on posting photos to the board >> http://dhbc.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1017

You have to upload them to a website first. Photobucket (easiest), Flickr or Picasa all work.

I don't know much about old bikes John but that Healing is very pretty indeed!
