I don't really think the club should be endorsing purchases from online sites such as PBK, CRC etc etc.

Just my personal opinion.

I think I can safely say that the club does not have an opinion on where people buy their stuff. People are free to buy from anyone they like. I always try to give my business to those bike shops that sponsor the club, or go the extra mile for us. In my case, I call Peter Bundy first every time.

Not everyone is going to use the bike shops that support the club. I will occasionally buy stuff online, usually when the item I'm after cannot be sourced locally. For example, I went looking for a Sturmey Archer 8-speed internal geared hub. The local distrubutor wanted over $400 for it. Peter Bundy did not have a relationship with the distributor, so I went online, where it could be had for $130.

Since people are going to buy online anyway, I see no harm in sharing discount codes. I'd rather see the savings go to local cyclists, than have us pay higher prices.

The post was from Toff not DHBC, but I don't see an issue with it. We all try and buy things of the local bike shops when we can, but some things you just have to buy on line due to economy, we've all done it. That's my opinion. 8)

I don't think that any post on the forum, other than those obviously endorsed by the club committee and usually in the News & Announcements section (which has restricted access), could be thought of as representing the views of "the club".
As for buying on-line - I do it for parts and accessories and will continue to do so, remembering that some of these shops are in Australia (like Cell for instance) although I wouldn't buy a complete bike from overseas. It's a free country, buy where you like I say.

Given Stuart has just posted I will retract my statement so it doesn't seem like a gang up...Statement retracted. Also - I think one opinion from the same household is enough. Crikey - I can't believe for once I am of the same opinion as Stuart. Go figure.

lol!! good to see you speaking up against it! ...

I buy just about every thing from shops, perhaps as i dont know how to work the internet for buying things, and am scared of countries like the usa and uk, but yeah.

Things like tyres its almost impossible for australian shops to compete with! though i have bought all my road clincher tyres in australia :D

It all depends doesn't it. I recently bought my Colnago Master through Peter Bundy. I wasn't game to buy a frame online, and wanted a master to build the eponymous machine, so Peter sourced the frame from the local distributor (FRF Sports) and then built it up with bits and pieces I bought online from Total Cycling, Wiggle, ProBikeKit and Evans Cycles.

Incidentally if you speak to some LBS people they'll say some local distributors need a kick in the backside. I can think of one or two (I won't name them) who are frankly charging ridiculous prices and offering virtually no service and making it difficult for the local shops to compete with the online retailers.

Oops, sorry.. I didn't mean to start a debate in a topic Toff had other intentions for. I should keep my mouth shut.

I just like to think that new riders are encouraged to build relationships with their bike shops. I have seen lots of new people getting into cycling that really don't ever step foot in their LBS. Such a shame, as there is some great deals to be had and great friends to be made.

Apologies once again, Toff.

In the interests of fairness, we should also post discounts we get at local bikeshops for being DHBC. For example, I can almost guarantee at least 10% discount if you tell Peter Bundy you are DHBC, and you can prove it. Probably more. When he get's back from his holiday I will confirm what you get.

The same applies for Burwood Cycles if you are a member of DHBC, or any club. I think they give 10% some times 15% if they are feeling generous.

l clicked 'add voucher' on the confirm page and got some discount (less than 20%) :D , even with the Platinum discount.

The voucher discount is off the list price.

Cheers
