Want to buy- group set

I'm looking for a deal on groupsets.
i'm thinking about the Campagnolo Veloce groupset or a Shimano Ultegra groupset.

I'm building up an old steel frame so if anyone has a better idea i'm open to suggestions.
I've checked out the usual suspects of ribble and wiggle, i'm just wondering if there was a set sitting in someone’s garage or a bike shop(last years set?) for sale or going for cheep.

PBK does cheap groupsets. They currently have Centaur (better than Veloce) for $756.21 in both compact and normal.

Here's the catch. The shortest crank that Campagnolo currently makes is 170mm in any groupset. I reckon you should buy a 165mm crank, and whilst 170 is going to be much better than the 175mm you are currently riding, it's not as good as 165mm.

I would recommend an e-mail to Steve Hogg to confirm this before you buy. He will probably give you an answer without charging, at least for the first reply. I see injury coming your way eventually if you keep riding such big cranks.

Lizanne: I gather you are taller than me, but from memory not that much taller. I rode with 170's for ages and actually run 155's now and love it. You probably dont need to get that drastic but Shimano and Sram do 165mm which is much more suited to you. So if you are starting from scratch - may aswell get some thing more suited to your size. At this stage you don't need to go to Steve Hogg which will cost you. You are welcome to test ride both my bikes which have shorter cranks than you need but will give you an idea of how they feel or the difference.

Save her the money and Steve's time, I know exactly what he is going to say as I have been through it in detail with him. He is all for the shorter cranks and uses your hieght as a guide unless you have disproportionate legs or torso to your body, this is what the majority of articles on the web say. I'm 153cm tall - I ran 155,s. Stuart who is a giant with long legs compared to me is currently running what Lizanne runs - so it's obvious she shouldn't be running that size.

I run 170 & 172.5. I don't know Lizanne's inseam measurement but I'd guess 160 - 165. With 175's you would be running higher gears to reduce the foot velocity.

If the current leavers are destined for the bin, then I'll have them as I want that shape for my fixie

So 165's would be the right size for Lizanne rather than the 175mms. Not many people would need to go as short as me as I've got extra short legs than normal people.

@ mike when i do get new cranks you can have the old ones

i was planning on going 165's(or whatever the cranks are on the jr track bike i've been riding, they feel great) for this one. and it's nice to be on a bike that actually fits me. i'll bring it by the track tonight. i fnially have it in a semi-rideable state. i'm a little short on the bike funds right now so ther is no real rush for getting a group set. i just wanted to put it out there just incase anyone saw a deal.

and ya the bike is hot! i've been looking for a few years for something that looks good in my size and the waiting has finally paid off. i can't wait to get it on the road.

i have just found a second hand DA group set on gumtree. The dude i'm talking too seems to be fairly clueless(just like me)

I'd say the chances of finding a second hand groupset with 165mm cranks isn't very high. So something like this may help fill the gap.

so i'll need the short cranks...

the big chainring loosk like it needs replacing so the cassette probabally will need a change too.

Do you only have the frame, or do you have the parts that are on it in that picture?
If you do have the parts, are they 600 or Dura ace brifters? Those go for heaps, and would possibly pay for half your groupset. I just sold some clapped-out Dura ace 8-speed 7400 brifters (similar to those pictured) for $200. The 600 ones go for around the same so maybe look at selling some of your parts. If it helps you get better ones, it's worth it.

Sounds like 9spd Dura-Ace. You're best going with 10spd these days for the ease of finding parts or borrowing stuff.
