Scott 24 Hour Entries Open!

The website isn't up yet, but entries are open online now at:

https://www.registernow.com.au/mtba/ERe ... aspx?E=343

This year's cap is 450 (most likely due to the affiliation with the world solo champs, for which qualifying is done and dusted), so getting in quick is a must.

I'm keen on a competitive team of 2 or 4 and have messaged another couple of mates, as I don't want to miss out. If you are keen, let's turn the trails DHBC red!

Shoot me a PM or post here and we'll sort this sucker out!!

I'm in for pairs or fours....have you entered yet?

I want in! My sister was keen on doing it. I was fantasising about racing as a female pair... There was only one of them last year. I don't know how realistic actually doing it is though.

I haven't entered yet John. Pairs'd be sweet, heaps more riding and a good lead up to solo-ing.

V. I shall have to refrain from making an inappropriate comment about your fantasy on such a proper forum as this! lol! Go for it though, that'd be awesome! Or of course you'd be welcome in any team I'm in I'm sure!

I'm ready to "heart magnesium"!!

I would prefer a team of 4 but would also do a 2 if needs be. We should act quick & I'm happy to do an entry.

We need some organizing so copy your names below & we'll work out the teams... do it QUICK.

Teams of 2 or 4 Competitive -

Teams of 2 or 4 or not as Competitive -

Haha Anthony... I am afraid my fantasies are rather dull and cycling related :(

Waiting to speak to Aimee to see if she is still keen. We would be in the not so competitive camp, but secretly we might be competing with something... Quite possibly any slugs or snails that happen to be perusing the trails ;)

As offered in the 'Fling thread, my giant trance full suspension (large/20") could be made available if someone is keen in a non-competitive 4 or 6. Although it'd be good for me to be able to take some or all of my night laps on the full sus. as my back fatigues on the carbon hardtail. Not having a bike should by no means be a deterrent for a 24-hour either! At the recent Mont 24 hour, I raced all 5/6 of my laps on demo bikes (which were great fun!). The more the merrier!

I guess i could be support crew (i think i'll be taking some holidays around that time anyway), though i'd probably have to take my road bike and do some training during the daylight hours.

I heard James will be giving us pre and post ride massages.

(I was going to say 'lap' instead of 'ride', but using lap and massages next to each other in a sentence didn't seem very appropriate)

"The DHBC triple D's" mens three have been entered, John, Anthony and myself. This is one of those events you look forward too, mildly hate whilst you're doing it (if you get the bad lap, 3am) but are keen for the next one about two hours after its finished.

The DHBC Bottom Brackets are in. That's Kevin, Aimee A and Victoria.

This is going to be fun. I'm really happy about doing threes instead of four. It will be good to have others out on the track with you, and keeping you sane back at camp when you're wondering why the hell you signed up for it...

Learning to ride a mountain bike is easy, learning how not to crash, that's a little harder.

I'd like it to stay about 5 degrees. Its a bit early to be placing any bets and it is in Canberra, so it could be anything.

Well this is certainly creeping up on us.

We need to start thinking about transport arrangements as well as stuff we're bringing.

Christian and I will be bringing a 2 room tent, that I guess fits about four people? I need to confirm this though. Tim will be shacking up with us. The map of the village is here - http://www.scott24hr.com.au/village/?In ... ontId=2259. We want to get a camp site that allows us to transition at camp after crossing the timing mats. Those who actually rode last year will probably know where that would be? I'm not sure what way you go out onto the lap.

So someone will need to get there early to reserve a spot. Is anyone planning on heading down later on Friday? I am having problems trying to get out of work early so I might not have a choice, and I think Christian wants to head down early.

Re: Scott 24 Hour Entries Open!

Posted: 22 Sep 2010, 16:16
by christian
If we work on the assumption that transition is in the same place as last year, and the direction is the same then where we camped last year is on the wrong side of transition, the entry not the exit. As the solo 24hr is running at the same time I can't be sure how the transition area will be set up. They release the course map 2 weeks before the event so we will have time to sort it out.

The list of who is bringing what:

20L Water container, Christian (I'll be buying a new one)
Trolley for moving water, Christian

Understand I bought this Primus Gas lantern in 1978 - I kid you not - still works fine though and buy a mantle for a medium lantern. The empty mantle packet says Shields Mantles No. S1 and the Primus originals are for a "Nomad" Part No. LM 176.

We miss out on the long climb (which call me crazy but I actually like it) and get two sharp ones instead. I was a bit concerned when I heard we were just going to get the old blue lap which was a bit too flat, this one could be good, and at 18kms its a good length.

Ted & I are driving down Friday morning.

Meanwhile, I've had to cancel my LWE touring plans with Mark & Amy on the grounds I'm too sick. But I hope to be better by Monday. Anyone fancy doing the Oaks or something? I should probably get a better handle on this MTB thing before next weekend.

Hey Cam,

Bad luck about being sick. There will be a road ride some where on Monday, possibly Akuna - although it will be an easy ride. Drive there, ride 70km. At the moment it will be Mark Hales, Stuart and me although Michele P may be interested. If you guys want to ride harder - I'm happy to cruise around with Stu and take it easy. At this point it probably will be a later start than 6.30 due to Mark going out on the booze Sunday night. Let us know if your interested.

For those of us going down on the Friday you won't be able to drive into the camp site to unload after 2pm. Apparently all cars need to be out by 2pm, which is going to make it difficult if you can't get away early.

That's somewhat inconvenient, so trollies could be the order of the day.
I'm be bringing down a little one-burner Coleman shellite stove which works well in the Canberra cold, a kettle and a little shellite lamp that is quite bright. I'll also bring another 20L of water.

Is anyone taking down an air mattress foot pump, who is going down on Friday?

There has been some more information posted on the Scott website about the parking situation, there is going to be a shuttle service running with trailers to help move heavy stuff to the camp sites. This saves doing lots of trips with the trolley.

I've had a response on Rotorburn now so I am hoping they will ride

Trying to do my best to get Aimee some money back. $150 is a fair bit to lose. If it comes down to us having a spare race plate I have someone who is down there anyway that will ride, maybe not 6 laps but 3 or something. That should ease the pain for us.

Well that was really fun. Thanks everyone for an awesome weekend! I feel totally cooked, but it was soo worth it. What a great track and great company. I don't think all the riding and lack of sleeping would have been possible without everyones encouragement, and the constant supply of food ;)

Shame Kevin missed out on the bike, and Ted on the wheels! I knew his name would be called for something haha.

Hi guys, I was down there with a few mates (we came 10th in the mixed 6s). I bumped into Lindsay after a rider went down on Double Dissolution out the back of the course and cheered on all the DHBC riders I saw. Good to see so many red jerseys down there. Here's a shot I got of one of you guys. The full size version (5 Mb) can be downloaded here: http://electrofishing.net/photos/dhbc_scott_24hr.jpg

It was a great weekend. Here are the results for our team
http://www.onlineresults.com.au/Results ... 8129aa53da
I think we would have finished 4th if I hadn't crashed on the last lap, we were a lap down on 3rd place. John got the fastest lap time, but not by much, I was planing a fast final lap, stupid rock. Off to the doctor to see about the hand now.

Did Ted seriously win some wheels? He'll be very upset not to have been able to claim them (and donate them back to the club). And when you say Kevin "missed out" on the bike, I hope that you meant because he was a number off rather than not being there to take possession!

Great work everyone. I was very impressed by everyone's efforts. It was a brilliant (and very educational) weekend.

Sat in the bath last night and watched my bruises spread. My feet and right armpit are still the correct colour, but that's about it.

That's a really nice shot of Anthony, thanks Tom! Well done on getting 10th too, that's impressive given the field.

I am feeling pretty good today, suprisingly. I am still regretful that I wasn't able to do my last lap. I reckon I could have done at least another two over night if I didn't have to stop to eat/charge batteries etc since I wasn't prepared for back to back riding like that. Probably would have gotten heaps more tired. Anyway, it was just fun to be able to ride as much as I liked.

Thanks Kevin for going out on the last lap after I cracked my helmet. I know how much you didn't want to. And thanks to Michael Churchwood for his blistering 1 hour lap on Sunday morning! Oh I mean, thanks Ted ;) Hehe.

looking at those pics of Camilla, reading that Christian and John have broken bones and that having broken her helmet I assume Vic had a big off shows clearly that to race a 24 hour MTB race you need to be certifiably insane - still, looks like you all had fun.

Did anyone else take photos? At the moment it looks like I wasn't even there. Maybe it was all a dream? I know I dreamt of lots of rocks and dust last night!

Stuart, I think there is some level of insanity involved. The crashes happened later on in the event, as you get pretty tired and do some silly things. For me this was getting competitive and thinking that my 2 man team (or was that 1.75?) could beat Simon's 3 man team, and deciding to tail one of the "elite riders" around some berms. Oops! But really, that's all part of the fun of it. At the end of the day you come away with some great stories to tell. I know I'll be buzzing for weeks after this one, it was all just too exciting. I loved every moment of it, even when I was climbing in the granny ring and about to throw up at 3am!

Yes, sorry about the photos: I got shots of the Le Mans start, and first people finishing their first lap but otherwise the opportunities weren't all that many unless I wanted to hang around on the track for long periods. Just glad that there was some record of the DHBC ghetto by night. Did John break a bone too? If so he's taken his customary stoicism to new heights.

Ouch! Christian, you were not kidding! John - did you do a rib? And there I was lying in my pile of pointy rocks on the "velocity" track in the dark, half wishing I'd broken a bone so that I could be heli-vacced out rather than have to complete the next 8 km of the loop (cheers to absolutely every rider who went past and asked if I was ok so that I finally got bored of say "yeah, thanks, I'm fine" and pulled myself out of the crevice and kept going).

And Vic - the dust is just a subtle device to cover the cuts and bruises. Had to open a gash on my knee and scrape out the bike grease on Sunday night when I got home, suddenly realising I'd be tattooed for life. Am going shopping for a sequined kaftan tomorrow for the annual Nicholson Museum party. The mini-dress I'd been indending on is going to be more Friday the 13th than sexy!

That would have been John. It's a real school clock! There is also a white board to the left keeping track of their teams expected arrival times, and a sign to the right reminding Victoria to take her insulin. I didn't remember despite the sign, but luckily team nurse Simon did!

Thanks Ted, yeah, I'm interested in yours and Tom's. There's plenty of res. for profile pics, cheers.

V, the Mont is very similar to the Scott, if not a little less technical. You are right, no solos, so it tends to flow better, but there are generally plenty of opportunities to pass anyway. I can't wait til the next 24, this Scott was my most enjoyable yet and least painful, so your body definitely gets used to those strange sensations that 24-hours can induce. I have also found my personal management improves each race as well.

Here is a quick summary of the results

Number of laps completed
Christian 7
Anthony 7
John 6
Victoria 6
Kevin 5
Simon 5
Chris 4
Camilla 4
Megan 3
Lindsay 3

Top three lap times (not all that accurate since we transitioned in camp, but I'm going to say the order is correct)
John 1:01:21
Christian 1:02:27
Anthony 1:02:54

No Christian + 1 :( If I hadn't cracked that helmet I would have done = Christian. Definately going for + 1 next time though.

Re: Scott 24 Hour Entries Open!

Posted: 12 Oct 2010, 16:44
by Camilla
That's not 100% accurate. I rolled over the line for Lindsay after he did his final lap. He didn't go through transition and went for a shower instead, because we had to wait until after 11.15 to record a time. No way we either of us doing another lap! (Going through I saw something like 11 hours flash up on the board, which I'm proud to think must be the DHBC record for the slowest lap time!)

But I'm deducting .4 of a lap from Lindsay for that sneaky shortcut on his night lap (that we all wished we'd taken).

Number of laps completed
Christian 7
Anthony 7
John 6
Victoria 6
Kevin 5
Simon 5
Chris 4
Lindsay 3.6
Camilla 3
Megan 3

John - did you do a rib?
I went to the hospital for x-rays after work today. The damage is two fractured ribs.
Both the fractures were tiny though, I could hardly see them. I was more impressed with my resting heart rate. 45 bpm!

A lap is 18.7km and a really fast one would be an hour. I never saw the true ugliness of the single-track up the hill, but I suspect that all these people are completely mad for wanting to ride it.

Overall DHBC did really well.

The team of three males got fifth in their category out of a large field - something like 26 teams. They were really close to coming fourth. It was a really massive achievement and I think with a bit of fine tuning they could be on that podium. They rode really consistently through the night and there was rarely a moment when one of them wasn't out on course.

The mixed threes don't attract a very large field, which is unfortunate because I reckon it's one of the most fun categories. There were five teams - Sydney CCC came in first and another team who I believe are a group of adventure racers came in second. Simon/Chris/Megan came in third closely followed by Victoria/Kevin - on the same number of laps but came in from the last one later than the threesome. Lindsay/Camilla came in next and were probably the most sensible of the bunch, getting a bit more sleep. Lindsay was seen to be socialising out on course wherever he could, and helping hurt riders. Camilla was seen to be getting some impressive bruises and scratches in true heroic fashion!

I went to the hospital for x-rays after work today. The damage is two fractured ribs.
Both the fractures were tiny though, I could hardly see them. I was more impressed with my resting heart rate. 45 bpm!
Sorry to hear about the ribs John, that's hard luck. You're right about being able to discover your resting heart rate in hospital though, at PoW mine was...32! It would drop every time I tried to sleep and set off an alarm that would wake me up. I tried to get the alarm turned off but they didn't want me dying without them knowing. After an hour or so of nodding off and being alarmed awake every 10 minutes they relented, thankfully.

Just got my x-rays back. All clear! The ribs are just sprained and bruised, but as I'm in no immediate danger of tearing a lung I shall keep calm and carry on. (However I do reserve the right to whimper going up hills on the fixie century this Sunday).

I didn't get to find out my resting heart rate, although I have no doubt it's nowhere near as impressive as John or Matt's. They did say "my heart size was on the upper limits of normal". I like to think that means I'm built alike Pharlap, rather than anything insidious.

So, only 80% of DHBC riders broke bones at the 2010 Scott. That's a relief. People might be put off otherwise.

Meanwhile, great photos. I particularly like the first one of Anthony. And the clock. Heaps of good ones in the professional series too.

Camilla - we have laughed so hard we may need Xrays too!

Best wishes for recovery to all our riders.

Correction: 80% didn't break bones. Although I still don't consider 1 in 5 a great stat, I didn't mean to put people off quite that much!

Hi guys, late into the thread again but that thanks for a great weekend which I really enjoyed. Thanks particularly Simon and Megan and to Lindsay and Victoria for organising the 3s. Had a few tests and scans this week and everything is - quite literally - all clear. Cheers again for a fun ride.
