As some of you know, I got 44 flat tyres in 2008. So I'm challenging you lot to beat me in 2009.

AND to make it fair, I'm providing the following points system (after applying for an exemption from equal opportuntity);
- Mikesbytes gets 1/2 point per flat (handicap)
- Any male that gets a flat and has it changed by someone else only gets 1/2 point
- Any female that gets a flat and changes it herself gets and extra point
- Any person who changes a flat for some other DHBC rider gets a 1/2 point. If not related to DHBC then no points are accumulated.
- Any male that pinches the tube putting it on gets deducted 1/2 point
- 1/2 point deducted if you don't have your own tube
- 1/2 point for lending a tube
- 1/2 point deducted if you don't return a tube within 14 days
- The flat itself gets 1 point (except for mikebytes)

Definition of a flat
- The tyre has insufficient air in it to be realistically ridden and that is not due to being slack about pumping it up.
- The tube must be replaced, or patched to count points
- The bike must be ridden on between flats, ie if you change the tube and it goes down again, then were not going to award yah for bad changing, in fact you loose 1/2 a point.

Competition period 01/01/2009 till 31/12/2009

Update the tally when yah post.

I think the tally the moment is something like

+2 Camilla - who put those dam railway tracks there!
+1 Scrubface - gaterskins ain't suppose to puncture

Helping a female scores you a 1/2 point and prevents them from getting an extra point

She did, but to get 4 points she needed to change them herself. Did she change them?

I would further propose that there be another 1/2 point penalty for anyone using certain types of tyre. ;)

"Dodgy" ones!

Oops, just realized that 1/2 point less for you and 1/2 point less for dodgy tyres, it'll nullify at least 2/3 of your annual punctures.

"Scrubface" where did my h and second b go too.

If im being honst lindsay actually changed my tube for me. So thats minus 1/2. Also considering that it usually takes me about 10 minutes with tyre levers, and it took him less than 5 without them, i should probably lose all my points.

Would I get points for...

a) Fixing a flat on my unicycles?
b) Helping other Unicyclists change/fix their flats?

At the end of the day though, I don't think I want to take part, this sounds like a really good way to anger the Puncture Gods...

Of course, your a DHBC rider, but you only get points for the other unicyclists if they are also DHBC riders.

Well at this stage I am at 3 flats for the year, 2 trying to catch James on the way to Galston Gorge and one riding my bike to the car at Jamberoo after the JWC.

On top of that I had 2 change 2 tubes this morning for one of the guys I was training with.

Was he a DHBC rider? if so, you score extra points.

Copy, update and post the tally Glenno.

Gosh! Sorry, missed all that!

So, I was in the process of changing my rear tire when Ron stopped to lend a hand. Thanks Ron! (1/2 a point). Then Declan turned up for moral support. After riding off I quickly realised I'd done the front tire too, and that one was a combo change between Declan & Ron (1/4 a point each). I've not yet returned a tube to Declan (1/2 a point to him for lending it to me, minus 1/2 a point from me for not having one) but have every intention of doing so next time I see him. If that's not within the next 12 days I'll let you know!

If only I'd known I could get 2 extra points I may have shooed Ron away! But who am I kidding.

ha ha, that's complicated. Now you know not to flutter your eyelids at the boys :)

However, you've done yourself out of a point, as being female, you get a point just for getting the flat and as you had 2 flats and half changed one yourself, then you should be on 2.5 points (correct me if I'm wrong)

Well, I only got as far as getting the chain down to the little cogs and releasing the brakes, so I think Ron probably deserves the full half point.

Was that an oxymoron? I think so.

Don't forget I lose half a point for not having the second tube.

After fixing the beast I pumped up the tyres and about 5 minutes later I heard the rush of air, I had a flat front. I took the tube out and pumped it up and couldn't find anything wrong with it, so I assumed that the valve had got stuck, so I put it back in but I couldn't get any more than 40psi in it. I suspected there was a problem with the valve stem and sure enough, once I had it out again I located a fault at the base of the valve. So that's my first one for the year.

But did you ride b/n pumping and the subsequent flat? Sounds like that you've ripped the stem whilst pumping and that to me should have been a technical penalty of 1/2 point. It's a flat that wasn't induced by riding, but utterly poor pumping technique. Much worse than pinching a tube during a tube change.

So please re-allocate yourself and join Shrubb_face at -0.5!

Yes, that wheel has done something like 100k since it last punctured. Unusual to travel that far between punctures.

Tube is a write off, time to turn up to Al's with $40 in hand.

Given the general intention of that rule, ripping the valve head is in the same "poor technique" category and should be penalized!

Excuse my ignorance but why should you be rewared for getting a puncture?

I have so far in my shortish riding career, yet to experience a puncture and therefore would have no idea how long it would take me to change tubes, let alone patch a tube. I have so far done about 3000kms without puncture and may the Gods be with me for a further 3000km.

My goal therefore is to remain firmly on 0 points. I would be of no assitance to either male or female rider if they sustained a puncture, though I guess I could stand around and watch.....would that gain me points?

The points show the relationship between punctures and yourself, there is no reward in getting a puncture.

2000k is a typical average between punctures, however we live in glass city.

If someone else changes your tube, you get -0.5 points, so the only way you are likely to remain on 0 points is not to get a puncture. Changing every 3rd puncture yourself will also see you remain on 0 points.

mmm.....I'd be happy to oblige with fixing only every 3rd puncture :D .

Holy Smoke Mike - how many kms do you do in a year? Think you said you got 40 something punctures in 2008. At a an ave of one puncture per 2000km thats 80000kms!!!!!!!! maybe the glass city comment brings the ave down

My tyres are Bontrager Racelites on the Trek 1.9 and Maxxis Refuse on the Single Speed (tough, but exceedingly dangerous in the wet!) - they seem to be doing the job at least as far as puncture resistance goes.

13,248K in 2008, so I should of got 6 or 7 punctures

My punctures were on 3 different bikes, 8 different wheels, about 12 different tyres.

I predict Mike's puncture rate will drop significantly this year once he gets back on his new GP4000S shod wheels.

My flat rate for last year was around 1200km/puncture.

I'm also going to order gator skins for the commuter and perhaps use tyre liners too.

The problem with tyre liners is that above about 100psi, the liner damages the tube where the fold is, I've heard that some electrical insulation tape can prevent that problem.

Until I get the hyperglide removal tool, I stuck with a pro2race on the rear of the beast.

Edit: Gatorskins out of stock http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=Y1320

You're stuffed now.

You have just incurred the wrath of the Puncture Gods. You will now probably average about 5 punctures/100km for the next month.

Don't believe me? I've seen it too many times. When someone gets a flat in a bunch, ever noticed that no one says "Gee, can't remember the last time I had a flat"? This is why, if someone does, they'll get the next flat (usually within 10kms).

So this really is just a puncture repair competition for the male specie, not a puncture competition...

thats what i was thinking?!
i think you need to start a seperate comp just for the amount of punctures?!

speaking of the liner things though, id love to have those, but yeah have heard about them being bad for tubes :( is it much harder to ride at 100 than 110 or 20?

This is a competition that tests your ability to change your own flats and to test your ability to help others that are down and out.

It also personalised those who bludge tubes and don't return them.

With 2 flats before I even left the house this morning, I am all over this competition!

New tally stands at:

Points
10

08
07

06.5 Camilla

03 Glenno
02
01 geoffs
0.75 Ron Declan
0.5 Lindsay mikesbytes

I'm already being awarded for being female, should I really be awarded for be stupid? Both flats were my fault. The first I over-inflated, the second I guess I pinched.

Have to check those rules more carefully....

- The bike must be ridden on between flats, ie if you change the tube and it goes down again, then were not going to award yah for bad changing, in fact you loose 1/2 a point.

So, the way i see it, one of the flats must have been ridden on, so you gain 2points for the first flat, and lose 1/2 a point for the second, total gain 1.5points.

Then again, if overflating is determined to be saboutage, there could be more points that should be lost. We'll have to wait for Mike to pass judgement on this one.

I incured a 1 point flat this mornig on the way back from Waterfall. Changed the myself but was assisted by Lindsay with pumping. Moral support/adjudication provided by commisaire Mikesbytes.
As there is nothing in the rule book about who has to pump up the tyre i start my tally on 1 point. :(

Let me check the point scoring classifications

Get Flat tyre
0 male
1 female

So miss'em out is also a miss'em out for getting the flat tyre.

However, once you get your totalled wheel fixed or replaced, then;

Repair own flat tyre
1 male
1 female
mikesbytes only gets 1/2 point (handicap)

BTW, sorrry to hear about your off.

Alex, Just thinking about your points, if you give the wheel to Lindsay, don't give him the tube and tyre, cos if Lindsay changes it, instead of getting 1 point, you'll loose another 1/2 point.

Mike, I got another flat this morning. I am getting very fast at changing tubes now. How come there is so much glass on the roads in Sydney? Or am i riding too much? I have a challenge for you. I need to find a source of tubes for less than $4/tube for a new tube. I don't care about the weight of the tube, the country of origin or the brand. I am happy to buy in quanity (up to 10 tubes)

What about patching? Last Sunday after Waterfall I engaged in a big, sweaty, hardcore, consensual patch session with a bunch of punctured rubber*. I was using my Weldtite Cure-C-Cure patch kit (the only kit I've found with patches small enough). Most bike shops also sell just the strips of 6 Weldtite patches - I last bought from Burwood Cycles for $2.
Image

So (ignoring the obvious screwy logic), there's a way of getting a "new tube" for 30 cents!

I reckon patches make a tube as good and strong as new, plus, you get a satisfied buzz from fixing something, if you're into that sort of thing.

After awaiting judication from Mike, I'm told I have to put my own 2 cents worth in. So here goes: I fully accept the deduction of 2 points from my initial interpreation of the rules (for not riding on the tyre between flats) but refute the further 0.5 reduction, due to yet another XX chromosome favouring sub-rule:

"Any male that pinches the tube putting it on gets deducted 1/2 point"

So I'd like to claim this half point back, being not male, epsecially as I need it so that I can lose it again tomorrow in case Declan doesn't turn up to receive the tube I've been carrying around for him for 13 days.

Grand-master Mikesbyte! Update the tally! The way I see it I stand on 4.5. Glenno I've not idea about. But do we really want to wrestle this particular comp out? What do we win anyway? A muffin? Everyone's unpatched flats for the year?

In future, all of you can update the tally yourselves, unless you also need someone to wipe your bottom after going to the bathroom.

What does the populous think, should we award, say an extra 1/2 point for successfully patching a tube?

BTW Alex, unless I'm mistaken -0.5 + 1 = 0.5

Flat at heffron in the middle of the race due to glass on the track, its great that Easts have some spare wheels to borrow otherwise I would have had to to hit up Simon who was bludging behind the C grade pack.

+2

Last night, something went thru the rear tyre, possilbly a nail. As I'm down to 13 spare tubes, I decided to patch the tube and put it back in. I patched the tyre too and now I'm out of patches.

This morning the same rear went flat and the problem was that the valve had ripped out from tube. I know dam well I didn't cause that when changing or pumping, it looks like the rubber has unglued itself from the valve stem.
