So what happened with Amy's flat ?

+1 flat = 1/2 point for me

My bunny hop of a drain on King st, Newtown failed to clear the rear wheel and in it went, causing a flat spot. Dam stationary motor vehicles getting in the way of real progress.

On my first ride to waterfall I got a flat that Lindsay changed for me (and lent me a tube). Today, I got another flat but changed it myself (I hope there isn't a time penalty for how long it actually takes to change it?!)

However, when I started to pump it up, that's when the trouble started. My pump wouldn't work at all. We then flagged down Michael (DHBC) whos pump, instead of putting air into the tire- sucked it out. Eventully we stopped Douglas, a local rider, pumped up the tire for me.

I hope this doesn't become a regular occurrence...

Got a flat going through the Park today. On the bright side, it means that I got to trial my new saddle bag kit.

Observances. Getting the tyre leavers out with cold fingers isn't much fun. Once you've got whatever you need, you tend to dump the kit on the ground, which then means that it is a great place to put things like your elastic band, and other stuff from the tube while you are installing it.

Jimmy is closing fast on Glenno.

Kate, I don't understand how you have 2.5 points? Have you applied the points rules correctly? BTW there's a penalty for not returning the tube within 14 days, but its not 14 days yet...

Hi Mike,

I think it works out as followed:

Waterfall 1
1 point for the flat
-1/2 no tube

Waterfall 2
1 point for the flat
1 point for fixing it

But, that is going by the notes at the bottom of the page too, I got a bit confused so I could be wrong...

But you only loose the half point if you don't return the tube within 14 days

Front tube blew out while I was at work today, it went near the valve so I can't even repair it.

At least it was only a Conti tube...

joining in at the end, I have no idea about how the points system works.

I got my first flat of this mellenia today (though that indicates how little I have ridden). Is was also the fourth day on my new machine and I did not have the any spanners to remove the wheel, though I did have a spare tube. in the end someone from work came with some spanners to help out and I rode the rest of the way to work.

There are a few ways to ensure that you get a flat

1) Be unprepared for a flat (i.e. no pump, no spare tube, no tyre levers etc)
2) Be really prepared for a flat (i.e. heaps of spare tubes, etc)
3) Piss off the Puncture Gods

Right now, I am in category 2 and 3.

I am in category 2 as I have only 1 tube that is currently unpatched, that is the one with about 30 holes in it. That has had 10-15 patches applied to it, and I am still going. The one from last night is being patched as I type this. I have about 10 or so tubes, most of the them are spares. If I have 8 spares, then I seem to get a lot of flats, when I am down to my last 1 or 2 spares, I seem to be able to go for months without flats. As I have a holiday coming up, I am trying to have all of my spares available.

I am in category 3 as I have recently run some bicycle maintenance courses at work, one topic I covered was "How to Patch a Tube". This means that I have showed about 15 people how to patch a tube with the knowledge that I have gathered from patching tubes over the last 5 years. This does not impress the Puncture Gods. As a result, I am now getting a lot of punctures.

Why do you think that whenever someone gets a flat in a bunch, no one mentions how long it has been since they last had a flat? Otherwise they know they are next on the list. I remember riding out to West Head a couple of years ago, I asked someone about the then new Continental 4000 tyres. He commented that you don't get flats. Guess who flatted on the way back?

4) Talking about the Puncture Gods

I was on the bloody rollers when I got this one. But according to the rules, the bike must be ridden between the flat. I was riding. Got a flat, changed it, and kept riding.

Objectively speaking, Mike got all his flats last years by running all those cheap tyres with zero puncture resistance or end of life ones. What's your secret James?

Actually, I'm running good tyres. The commuter is running Ritchey Tom slicks (RRP of about $70), the front tyre on the road bike is a GP 4000, and the rear is a Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp (RRP $70).

The only thing is that I tend to run tyres into the ground. The flat on the rollers was a wear flat, the nick in the tyre from last night was too big. I have put a tyre boot in there now.

my 20 cents worth on flats.

since i changed all my training tyres over to the conti gator skins no flats. i am replacing these every 2 months.

James it doesn't matter what the tyre cost, or whats in it, if its only got 0.5mm of rubber left. i believed that you could ride a tyre until all the rubber was gone but it just ruins your training. Also if you lock up the wheels and the tyre skids i would not want a thin tyre on. tyres are only good for about 3000km on sydney roads. i have done heaps more than that but the flats start to increase.

I tend to get 2,500 - 3,000km out of a rear tyre, I keep note of a tyre change in my ride dairy, so I can keep an eye on how old it is. I do this with a visual inspection.

However, as stated before, I am cheap, so I tend to use a tyre with a knick that should be replaced by putting a boot under it. It is pretty annoying slapping a new $70 tyre on the bike, and then hitting a piece of glass that puts a decent cut in it. My flat on Saturday was because I wasn't aware of how big the cut that I got on Friday night was. When changing a tube in the dark and the wet, when you are only 20 minutes from home, you tend not to look too closely at the tyre.

I think at the moment that my current rear tyre has about 1,500km of use in it. I will change both of them before I go away on my holiday, and then take 2 spares with me.

James

ps: I think that I have finally finished patching the tube with the multiple pinch flats. I put what I hope is the last patch on this morning. I'll see tonight if it holds any air.

A flat on the way home from work tonight. There was a piece of glass in the tyre. Glass and the wet = more flats. Someone up there must have been concerned that I would shortly have no patching to do...

I got yet another flat yesterday up at Arcadia. I was on school camp and took my bike to escape from the kids in the mornings!

Found a bit of glass in the tyre. Am using conti gator skins and continental tubes but the flats keep alternating, back, front, back.

I'm getting better at changing them but my pump really needs replacing. Does anyone use C02?

I don't use CO2, while it can be quick, you never know how many times you are going to have to inflate a tyre.

I use one of these on the road bike

http://www.serfas.com/product_details.asp?ID=243

It is the best mini pump I have ever used. It is heavy, but I can easily get my tyres back to 120psi with it.

They sell for about $50 in Australia, expensive for a pump, but well worth it.

Mike

I rode the bike home on Thursday as I took it to work for a Lunch Time Ride. I went down on Saturday morning, and had to replace the tube, then I rode it this morning.

So yes, I did ride between flats.

OK, this is bullsh*t now.

I picked up a tiny piece of glass yesterday, so the tyre was soft again this morning. I could only find the hole with a bucket of water.

Just for you.

Staple in front tyre just before Bestic street on way back to city on the Coluzzi ride.

Not fun going through airport tunnel solo in peak hour traffic.

ok bit embarrasing, but i got some one else to change my first flat today, i thought they would be faster. The second flat i had to borrow a tube, as one of the tubes i brought was off a touring wheel, for some reason i took it with me :S. so yes, i was minus half a point, but still got one, so i go up by a half :D

Micklan and Mark L get half a point for my first flat, and micklan gets another half a point for lending me a tube.

Mark L also gets a point for doing his own (well micklan was there, not sure of the percentage, so maybe another half for micklan for helping, though i think mark still gets the point. Maybe up for mike to edit the score if he wants to officiate on this all.

Ok ok, seriously now, I am apparently disastrous with wheels, but tyres, tubes and I are friends. So today whilst "secret training" (shhhh, don't tell any of the NZ team) I rode into a gutter, tipped sideways and, yes you guessed it, bent my rim out of existence.

So the situation thus far...

3 broken spokes, wheel off getting repaired... still... and have borrowed a wheel from Geoff S. Now borrowed wheel appears to have a broken spoke, noticed Friday but wheel remains true (this is a super industrial wheel!). Now the front wheel is completely trashed and Rainbow is yet to have her revival!
Good thing I still have lovely purple-girl at the track. Perhaps my road days are over?

Any contenders?

Rainbow, perhaps you should start a spoke breakage comp next year. The problem is that your simply too strong, you'll have to use the same wheels as Huw

Update, Rainbow has made a spectacular recovery. You may see us gliding past you, a blur of Rainbows and single-speedness :D

Trouble averted, now lets just hope I don't break any spokes on my 650 wheels which are only 20 spoke! Oh the potential for disaster

Rainbow

Saw you today on the Cooks River bike path.

That bike path is hard on wheels so be careful on your 650 ones.

Well I think its time for quick update of my score.

Puncture on the fixie about a month ago after riding over/through a vodka bottle at 60km/h on the way back from water fall. +1

Puncture front and back on my road bike while it was in the car on saturday. I have no idea at all how it happened, one puncture was next to the tube stem and the other was in centre of the tube. +2

Got my first ever flat tyre (rear tyre) at Centennial Park last Saturday (6 June)after 2 years - I think those Mr Tuffy tyre liners certainly have helped in the past, considering the amount of commuting I do.

Yenwenyi and Jono kindly assisted in the repair work and many DHBC riders stopped to check I was all OK - well done team! Yenwenyi should get 1/2 point at least for putting tube back into wheel for me and reattaching wheel to bike - and guiding me through the process. I now know why having spare tube, pump and tyre removing plastic thingys comes in handy - we were able to escape Centennial Park bang on 8am to head back to Marrickville for coffee. Found the smallest hole in the old tube when at home - must have been a super sharp piece of glass to get through tube AND tyre liner!

Thanks to everyone that helped - much appreciated! :)

7 days down, and no flats (touch wood), it is nice to ride on glass free roads though...

OK - Tim got a flat today. I helped repair (a little bit), as did Mark L.
Do we both get a 1/2 point?

On 8 June I lent Tim a tube - today he returned the same tube to me due to said flat. It was a repaired tube, but this was a new stab to the tube - tube returned to me within the 14 days. :D

(BTW I think Suzie's post altered the points a bit?)

Interesting facts:

1. You can ride about 1km on the rim when the tyre is flat. I did it yesterday. (No tubes left after two flats in the same ride)
2. The rain makes every little piece of glass like a magnet that attracts them to rubber. ( i spent about an hour yesterday picking small pieces of glass from my tyre. These tyres are so new they still have the bead down the middle)
3. Bourke street in Darlinghurst/Surry Hills has laid claim to being a constant in my flats unquest..
4. White bar tape is a bad idea when you have to change a flat. (I keep my bike very clean but wet pads leave alot of black stuff every where)

I agree 100% - see I have no entry in this thread before now although i could have had 1 point for a torn (old, 2nd hand) tyre and flat on the way to slowies. Good tyres are expensive, but flats are a pain in the ass.

Camilla - Off subject - to go with the new tyres, where's the new bike pics? I want to see this piece of finery.

my tyres came with the bike, and the bike is pretty new. my flat count is over 4 bikes though :P but yeah, my road bike has only done 1000km's or so, how often are you supposed to change tyres?
speaking of, a flat on the track front wheel?! well it was a slow one, went from 120 on friday night, to 80 today, terry said i was better off changing it if there was a risk it would blow.

camilla

i can assure that i replace my tyres frequently. I change them every 2 months. (1600km/month x 2 = 3200km which is about what they should get

yes i don't want to win in this either

i patch all the tubes but don't actually use the patched tubes (there are 17 old tubes here)

If you see previous posts I actually don't care what the tyres cost. So far this year I have tried:

ultremo's - flat after 15km
Conti - gator skins (no grip in wet)
michellin pro race - the worst every for punctures
hutchison -
Vredstein fortezza com
25mm maxxis

I hate getting flats but i probably do more km's than most here also so when you average the km's to flats, i would be lower.

i ride every day. the simple fact is glass cuts rubber. there is a *censored* load of glass closer to the city and thats were i ride/live

anyone want to but some patched tubes!

And to further prove the point. Brand new conti gatorskin tyre used this morning and got a flat Clovelly. Very big piece of glass embedded in the tyre.

I will have to relegate my leaders position, in this comp in true Lance style, by quitting while I am ahead.

I am having 3 months off from cycling, commencing this Friday. Unfortunately this is not a Festina or Landis style forced layoff, but rather a medical one.

However I have an incentive to that unlucky person who wins:

The choice of either:
a box of patched tubes
or
2 new tyres

(someone had better remind me at the end of the year)

Sidewall split on the way back from Waterfall today resulted in a slow leak. Ha, sidwall splits usually result in a bang

That makes 16 flats this year.... another 1/2 point

I got and changed my first flat ever yesterday on the way home from the track. It was on my roadie.

Noticed a hissing sound just as I was turning into my street. A nice chunk of glass was found in the tyre.

I'm a little confused about the point scoring system - mostly the gender favouritism. Does this mean I get 1 point for getting the flat and 1 point for changing it myself?

Yes, the system encourages the female kind to ride more and be self-sufficient in the event of a flat tyre.

+1

Rear on the commuter on the way to the gym in the morning, riding thru the rain. Missed my yoga class, so I sat on an indoor spin bike instead.

So that's another 1/2 point.

I think that its either Glenno or Jimmy, but 3rd is still up for grabs.

OK, one flat between Kununurra and Turkey Creek, hit a stone, which cut the tyre and gave me a flat so +1. I also got a flat at Fitzroy Crossing, ran over a thorn in the grass, and got a flat, so again, +1.

Now, on the way to Turkey Creek, I had another flat, but it was due to the tube I had been carrying since Alice Springs. Apparently, your sweat can degrade tubes, so I think that it was worse for wear. However, I did ride on between flats, so I am throwing that open the jury. It was something like 20 or 30 kilometres before the tube gave way.

Then, after changing that tube, I did again ride on, but only a kilometre if that. The tube was faulty as it had a hole near the valve. So again, I am throwing that open to the jury.

james,

i think your right about the sweat. i put the tubes in a zip lock bag with a bit of extra talc powder to ensure they stay dry. also it protects them from rubbing against things that might wear a hole in them.

before i started repacking the tubes i had a few that got rub holes from being in the saddle pack.

Works for me.

I've also heard that saliva can also damage tubes, this is why you shouldn't put a puff of air into a tube with your mouth. I know it is a hassle getting the pump out for that amount of air, but it will save your tubes in the long run.

I don't have an issue with the tube in my saddle bag getting a hole in it now that I have my kit. One woman on the ride had a spare tube in her saddle bag that was holed. I know I used to check mine every now and again.

Tim,

you increase the K's and the flats go up. Strange.

I'm still off the bike might see if i can do a lap or 2 at the park next week, but walking is still difficult it might be a challenge.

If i get out on the bike i'll sms you for a coffee after.

Valve on tube appears to have rotted a bit and popped off while checking tyre pressure. I guess the tube has been in use for 3 1/2 months now.

Bonus points for changing it myself.

Do the rules on page one question the reason for the tyre going down or just whether the bike was actually ridden before the tyre went down

Mike

What I am questioning, is you state that the bike must be ridden on between flats. So, if I put in a dodgy tube, that can hold air for a short distance, then I am eligible for another point, as long as I can throw a leg over the bike, even if I only get one or two pedal strokes in. That is why I threw it open to the jury.

In the first case, the tube lasted for a reasonable distance, the tube was able to hold air, and it deteriorated further while in the tyre, in the second case, the tube was already faulty when it went in, just not bad enough for it to go down straight away.

James, how do you feel your situation relates to the following rule

Definition of a flat
- The tyre has insufficient air in it to be realistically ridden and that is not due to being slack about pumping it up.
- The tube must be replaced, or patched to count points
- The bike must be ridden on between flats, ie if you change the tube and it goes down again, then were not going to award yah for bad changing, in fact you loose 1/2 a point.

Hoping I have the points right for this - flat on the mountain bike in between running into trees and rocks at Manly dam yesterday. Changed it myself, but had to borrow a tube (and a leaver). I did return it within a couple of hours however. So I guess that's 1 1/2 points?
