For more than 50 years, the local community has gathered at the site of the Canterbury Bowling Club on Close Street, Canterbury.

A recent council decision has closed the club and barred the people of Canterbury from use of this great green space.

But the community is not taking this terrible decision lying down.

A concerned group of local residents got together and established a new plan to further develop a live licensed music venue, theatre space, community garden and playing fields for local kids.

It’s clear our community demographic is going through a once in a generation change. The area has, and will continue become a magnet for young families. We desperately need more community spaces, more green spaces. Kids need the facilities and space to grow and develop in a safe environment.

As the local area continues to be redeveloped in a medium and high density capacity, Canterbury needs to retain a place for residents to meet – do things like grow a community garden, be engaged in cultural activities – that’s important in any community.

All we’re asking for is a welcoming space where kids can play, you can get a meal, people can get together for a drink and watch some theatre – get to know their neighbours without being exposed to anti-social activities such as gambling.

Nobody wants to live in a condensed area void of community engagement.

Canterbury Council doesn’t seem to want to look at these ideas – redevelopment appears to be the only objective.

So we need to do something about it.

A community campaign to save this important space is underway.

Vibrant local green spaces are the key to building a community. When you lose green spaces like this they don’t come back.

We won’t let that happen – so get involved!
