There have been some interesting chats going on surrounding this years tour, with the fall from grace of Bradley Wiggins who has gone from being crowned one of England's greatest (the greatest?) cyclists of all time, to dropping out of the Giro, and now the Tour, and being replaced by Chris Froome, who is the new favorite for the title.

Evans has come into the race after a strong finish in the Giro, bringing a team that doesn't include Thor Hushovd, hinting that it is all about taking the tour and not stage wins (though Gilbert is still in there).

Though Tejay van Garderen says he is behind Evans in the mountains for the tour, he has been riding strong and is also a prospective back up.

Contador is coming into the tour with a team that his manager has labeled a "really strong lineup, a great all-round team with a lot of valuable grand tour experience", including Australia's Michael rogers and Ireland's Nicholas roache.

What could be a more exciting battle, is that of the green jersey, with an;
altered the scoring system for the points competition ahead of the 2011 Tour de France, it appeared to mark a discernible shift in the philosophy behind the green jersey. Rather than ostensibly rewarding consistency over all terrains, the structure now seemed weighted very explicitly in favour of the pure sprinters, with the points for a flat stage win increased to 45 and with one “super” intermediate sprint worth 20 points replacing the traditional brace of sprints worth six points apiece.

This puts Cavendish and André Greipel in the driving seat up against Sagan, and should lead to an exciting tour!

most importantly the tour tracker app!

RaboBank used to have an app that showed the gaps between leader, bunches yellow jersey etc, I think this may have all that, which would be good

Crash report for stage 1;
World time trial champion Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) : suspected fractured collarbone.

Peter Sagan (Cannondale) hitting the ground.

Alberto Contador made contact with the pavement.: "we think I've nothing broken, now a lot of ice and rest. French asphalt is very hard!" Contador tweet.

Sky had at least two riders involved. Geraint Thomas had to be taken to hospital, and Ian Stannard was also involved.

Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil-DCM): team doctor stitched up his elbow and he had abrasions on his shoulder and legs, but did not need to go to hospital.

Chris Froome was the earliest victim of the day,, as he apparently got too close to the curb in the neutralized section.

Has anyone been reading Michael O'Reilly's (fellow DHBC member) blog on the SMH?

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cycling/tou ... .html#poll

A few mentions of other DHBC riders (Timothy Clifford, I mean you)... And possibly Eleri (if you were the one pointing out Michael's spelling mistakes)?

Guilty. I do enjoy Mr O's writing. I also Strava-stalk him. I like having the commentary running with the Tour tracker while watching the stages.

lol I haven't been, but will check it out!

first glimpse
1:14am: Mike Tomalaris has thankfully buttoned up his shirt and he's yarning to Scott McGrory, they are managing to keep it to a beaming delight.
lol!!

but yeah, nice pics etc, will try and keep up a bit.

Man I picked the right few stages to stay up for! its been pretty good even if we haven't gotten to see Cavendish etc in a big man sprint yet! At the moment it looks like Cadel, Contador, and Froom are all on a nice even keel. I never thought I would want to see Contador go well until last year when I started going to bed early during stages that were controlled so well by the skyline.

For those who are on Strava, Laurens tem Dam, a member of the Blanco team, is posting his rides each day. Makes for pretty impressive reading. And 45 pages of KOM's!

Also of note is that Froome's time up to Ax yesterday was the 3rd fastest in history...a small margin behind some guy named Lance from 2001.

loving the Green Edge star studded video, and the Strava lads stats, but Mike, I don't get the link with the Chinese lad. It is informative, but I didn't find the link to cycling!
