Eleri and I are planning another visit next week... Looks like it's a good sign he's been on Facebook.

UPDATE from Paul. Greg has asked to see some of the guys he rides with and knows best. If that's you, then PM me and I'll put you in touch with Paul to get you on the visit roster being developed at the moment.
Hi All,

It’s 5 and half weeks since Greg’s accident and he continues to progress nicely.

Yesterday he posted on Facebook , it even made sense – I think most of you saw it and commented or Liked. I just spoke to him a few minutes ago and he sounded remarkably normal – the slur is mostly gone, he’s a touch slower than normal but not massively so.

On Sunday he is going home for a few hours. This is a pretty big step forward and Greg sounds pretty pleased about it. (I did ask Sue if he was making it up).

The food is horrible at the Centre. Does anyone have a spare bar fridge? It would be good if he could store some food in his room.

He still is classified as having Post Traumatic Amnesia and he keeps scoring 10 or 11 out of 12 in his daily tests. He needs to get 12 out of 12 for 3 days in a row before he’s officially over it and they can start the parts of his rehab that require him to remember.

He is quite mobile now, he can walk several hundred metres at a time. He needs to wear a belt that allows his carers to hold onto him whilst he walks as he’s still not super steady on his feet. His left hand is still a little uncoordinated – he can catch a ball only with the right hand side.

I think he will have to focus now on relearning things – he was struggling to remember how to take his daughter to school and other similar tasks. It will take him but that’s what the centre specialises in.

Anyway that’s about it…..hopefully he can start writing his own updates soon.

And you'll be pleased to hear that I got 2 QOM's on our way out back to see you (well, one actually. Eleri got the other one until I stole it from her on my commute on Wednesday)...

I didn't see the accident, but given how you were lying on the ground, and the lack of damage to your helmet and bike, I gather you lost the front wheel and went face first into the ground. There was talk of it being a catseye or a mysterious bump in the road. You were not far off the white centre line (maybe 50cm?). You would have been doing between 50km/h to 60km/h easily.

Michele and I had an uplifting visit with Greg last night. Like all of us, we have been worried about the outcome of his monumental prang.

We entered The Royal Rehab at 259 Morrison Road Ryde last night around 6.30, after getting in touch with Paul and making a booking as suggested.

He is looking great and making terrific progress. Greg has a full dance card of physiotherapy to help him out and he really throwing himself into it. We spent the visit on our feet and walking about. He is really getting strength back.

Greg enjoys having visitors. He also wants to borrow the following DVDs:

Any good sport stuff, especially cycling,

Comedy or lightstuff,

and Fishing.

So have a look through your collections.

When we were there another visitor appeared, Chris from the day of the Johnny Warren. He was with Greg and two other carers til the ambulance appeared, and had been wanting to connect up with him. Through Paul he found out where Greg was.

A very lively conversation ensued. It looks like Greg's adventure has brought many people together and this says a lot about Greg as a person. I thought we might get thrown out for laughing so much.

So go and visit when you can. He thinks he will be there for another 4-6 weeks.

Tried to book Greg today, but there's no real timeslot available.

The good news is that Greg will be home on the weekend.

He will be back in rehab for weekdays, so I'll try and book for another day.

Update from the man himself

Rehab is proving a long haul, thankfully I have a leaving date, Tuesday the 7th of May. This makes rehab seem more bearable knowing that escape is at hand.

I keep my days busy with activities such as improving my typing skills which have eroded rather badly and other key life skills like putting pegs in holes. I also do a running group, daily physio, lots of walking and I’ll be put on a bike this Wednesday - I’ve got a new helmet.

The rehab is going well though the quick improvements have been realised so it feels a bit more like a graft. However today I did secure the ability to go down the road to the shops unaccompanied, so I’m still making a few wins. The visitors and weekend home visits make it bearable and I’m striving to make the most of my time here. I got see both my children play soccer on the weekend and partake in a coffee shop breakfast. I love those times because I stop feeling like a patient for a while.

The odds on a big party after the 7th of May are short but the details are to be confirmed.

Please liaise with Paul about the best times to visit me.
Greg

Oh no.

Next thing he'll be joining the Valley Wheelers, banging on about how great steel is, and going nuts over the Classic Bike Show.

Use the Force Greg. Don't walk towards the light.

I can drop some shaving cream and razors around. I can also bring you some more magazines. I'm sure there are some issues of Carbon Bike Monthly I can dig out for you.

Just say the word mate!

Great to see you back on a saddle, of sorts, Greg.
What's the training program - just k's, or more specific - cadence, hill repeats...?
Look forward to seeing you post-Ryde.

i recon Greg needs a few STRAVA segments for the hospital. I'd love to see Greg smash them as the physio work pays off.

Rolling back home after Waterfall along the Cooks River path this morning a familiar voice said "Hi John". It was Greg. I stopped and had a chat. He was out walking with a friend and is in training for the....

City to Surf :D . He plans to walk the 14 kms and his training is going well. He will be unable to ride an upright bike for a year (doctor's orders), but don't be too surprised to see him turn up to Slowies on a recumbent.

Though he still has a long way to go, every time I see Greg he looks better.

Hey Guys

Just a quick note to let everyone know I returned to 2 wheels yesterday. Just a 6 km chug along the Cooks River on a mates mountain bike rather than a roadie, but it was a bloody nice step on the way back.

Cheers
