For Europe I'm buying a Shimano triple groupset - Do I need a new rear derailleur as well? Also, the Shimano site says the BB Shell Width is 68/70mm - how do I know what my bike has now, given it has Ultegra? I'm assuming I don't need to buy a new BB or Cups?

Also, how do I know what size front clip-on derailleur I need? 28.6/31.8mm or 34.9mm? Where is this measured? I can't see any sizing on the one I have now.

Thanks

For a triple, you'll need a new left shifter and front derailleur. The rear shifter and derailleur should be fine.

I don't think the bottom bracket width matters much, but you can always check the specs on your frame - English thread is 68mm, Italian is 70mm.

For the front derailiuer, either u have clamp on or braze on. Braze on will have separate clamp on frame which you mount to. Size is measured at the outer seat tube down pipe thickness(sorry not sure formal name for that tube). Normaly measured with say vernier calipers to get the outer tube thikness. If don't have one, check your frame detail specs online somewhere.

Wouldn't going compact be a consideration versus the expense of a new shifter, triple chainset and derailleur?

I already have compacts .... they make the hills big in Europe. They will be transferred to new touring bike that is in pipeline for H2 2012.

If u can't find frame specs online, or not have an old derailiuer(of same bike) to measure. I have some calipers, based in hurlstone park. Pm me if needed

I believe it's the external diameter of your seattube.
I bought a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caliper#Vernier_caliper , you can get a plastic one for a couple of bucks at those discount shops and leave it in the toolbox.

OK. This idea has now been canned. This is entirely due to the unsuitability of the Ultegra triple to being used on a touring bike, therefore killing my re-use plans. Anyway, I've found you can get a 33T to fit 110BCD so I've ordered it. 33/28 it will have to be. Some of those Cols in the Dolomites will just have to stay off my list.

Although a mechanic did claim I could use a Shimano 9 speed MTB derailleur with a 32T SRAM cassette ... sounded dodgy to me but if anyone has any proven ideas that would enable me to use the SRAM 32t with only the addition of a new rear derailleur I'm happy to hear them.

Stu, that's how I set up my old steel tourer for our tassie trip. The front derailleur is a "Shimano Triple". I had to use a road style cos the MTB front mech needs more space between the wheel and the seat tube. The rear is Shimano "Alivio" 9 speed with 11-32T MTB cluster. Really cheap and worked a treat up the walls of Jerusalem with far too many possessions in the panniers! I smiled to myself more than once as I went down yet another gear and saw that there was still more to go!

I've just finished straightening the frame from when I got runover by a nurse late for work and I was going to take it for a test ride tonite to see if it will ever work properly again.

get a track rear wheel with a 32cog, have 2 gears, and manually change the wheel around like they did on all the hills back in the day.

Addit: I used a flat bar and the MTB gear selectors, but I prefer the drops for touring as there's more positions to relieve my creaky old sack of bones. I'm going to try some STI shifters instead, if the frame repairs have proved successful. That's the rub, but then (if it works) you'll have a template.

and here's a post showing that people def have done the 9 (or even 10) speed Deore MTB rear derailleur with a MTB cassette on road bike with 10 speed front derailleur and shifters. http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... p=16697525 : I think that's the solution. Even comes in an 11-36 and 11-34, although a 11-32 is probably the go - giving me a 34/32 ratio which sounds doable.

Stuart,
I can lend you a Triple bar-end shifter if you need it. It actulaly works better that STI as you can make minor adjustments to stop chain rub which is more of an issue on triples.

That's a great idea Adrian. Yes, you really have to do a (time consuming) fine adjustment and even then it can be a bit inconvenient. I've got an old Suntour bar-end shifter that's been hanging around for about 30 years.... :) and I just went down into the cellar and [miracle] put my hand on it straight away! [/miracle]. It was meant to be. Damn this rain.

@Adrian - thanks for the offer but I'm heading down the Shimano MTB derailleur and 11-32 MTB (or SRAM road) cassette route. Cheaper and easier I think.

Well in that case I have a Shimano rapid rise derailleur and cassette hanging on a wall if you wanted to test it out

It is definitely doable. I bought a commuter bike second hand with this setup on ebay - a road bike with ultegra shifters. Happy Col climbing.

My touring bike is set up with a road compact 50/34 crankset and a mountain bike cassette, 9 speed 11-32. I'm running and old Deore XT rear derailleur, road front and a set of Dura Ace bar end shifters. The set up works well and has got me up some hills in Tassie.
