Hi all,

I'm not sure if this has previously been posted on the forum as I don't keep too up to date with cycling politics. But I received an email from a cycle way advocate requesting the clubs support. Bike paths are very important infrastructure and it seems that the current project may be pulled from the budget.

So if anybody has the time on their hands they are requesting that everybody emails the letter to the premier and minister for transport which can be copied from this link: http://www.friendsofthegreenway.org.au/

Cheers Simon.

Absolutely right Simon. Since the state election the LNP have been very quiet regarding not only the Greenway and Cycleway but also the light rail itself. I woudl urge you send the email - try adding something personal to it as well.

I HOPE the rumours aren't right. I've been looking forward to sailing over Parramatta Rd on my commute for ages! I've sent off some emails...

Cycle Way Abandoned
The NSW Transport Minister is raising fears that a long-planned cycle path and walkway from the Cooks River to Iron Cove could be the victim of early budget cuts by the new government. The inner west GreenWay was to have been built along the extension of the light rail line from the Lilyfield terminus to a new stop at Dulwich Hill. Media Reports

It looks like the LNP are going to ignore 15 years of campaigning and good transport sense and not build the cycleway or the Greenway. Hardly an unexpected move from the Tories as the Greenway/Cycleway is in ALP / Greens heartland but we still have a chance to save it. Here's the link again to email the Premier and Minister for Transport. http://www.friendsofthegreenway.org.au/ Please do it today.

here's a report from today's SMH http://smh.drive.com.au/roads-and-traff ... 1imr3.html

Twitter is also alive the news that its sunk.

On Cadel's Day, took the time to write to Barry O'Farrell and Gladys Berejiklian, the Minister for Transport about this.

Here's hoping we can get this anticipated cyclepath completed.

Writing letter on an individual basis is fine, and I've sent one already.

May I ask if DHBC would consider writing a letter to the same effect , throwing the weight / numbers of the club behind such support ?

Thanks for posting this Simon.

Could I suggest that we take copies of the petition to pass around and sign at both the Saturday and Sunday rides. I'll bring some for Saturday. The petition needs to be delivered/posted to 244 Illawarra Rd, Marrickville 2204.

An official club letter to Minister Berejiklian would also be good.

Same as I posted in day of action thread:

he LNP have 'deferred' the Greenway - IMO meaning it is dead in the water. Here's what the Greenway site has to say. http://www.greenway.org.au/

Government has 'deferred' the GreenWay - Tuesday, 06 September 2011 16:02

The NSW State Government has 'deferred' the GreenWay in the State budget, stating that it was not properly costed by the Labour Government and was expected to cost more than originally planned. The Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklan went on to say:"It makes no sense to continue Labor’s incompetent attempts at building a cycling network without an integrated transport masterplan that includes active transport. "

This decision is very disappointing for the GreenWay stakeholders.

The full Department of Transport media release can be seen here as a PDF.

Weirdly, Berejiklan blames the ALP for the decision not to proceed, although the LNP are in government. So, we get little, expensive trains (maybe, that is also not actually fully funded) but no active transport options, while roads get billions & billions in extra funding.

If you do write to an MP, this blog post from Labor MLC Penny Clarke is very useful: it explains how to write good letters to MPs.
