What's the deal on protein powder at the moment, where's the good pricing? Do we need to do a group buy?

Or do we first need a discussion on whether it does any good and/or is safe and wise to take?

What's your take on it Dr Tedrobin?

My kids are mad for it, the crazy little coots. It's all a bit new-fangled for me. Isn't this the stuff that shrinks your testicles to the size of raisins?

The way I understand it, your body needs to rebuild muscle after you flog yourself silly during a workout/training session. You'll rebuild quicker and better if you give yourself some protein powder instead of your body cannibalising itself while you sleep and rebuilding from fat stores etc. (I'm probably wrong but this works in my head)
I take a shaker to practice sometimes. If I've been running a hard gear, or been riding BMX for a few hours I'll have some and I very rarely wake up sore.

Very different to that stuff. We're not talking steroids here.

It's been a few years, so i can't remember the exact details, but protein powder basically provides the body with amino acids which are required to build and/or repair muscles and other body tissues. There are also certain amino acids that the body is unable to manufacture itself and must be taken in through food, etc. It's good for when you are training a lot and your regular diet is unable to provide the body with the amount of protein it requires.

Protein is in products such as cheese and chicken.

The use of protein powder is to increase the consumption of protein. I use it selectively when the food I'm eating doesn't have the quantities of protein I prefer to consume.

So back to the actual topic. What's the current deals on protein powder and who's interested in a group buy?

if you just want protein the best tasteing and cheep stuff is home made. skim milk powder with milo, nesquick, or malt. depends on what taste you have. (seriously check out the protein content on skim mikl powder it's good stuff).
but if it's recovery stuff you want creatine is the way to go.
but for me i'm just on high quality fish oil and lots of eating.

and mike my boyfriend is an exercise physiologist. he does bulk orders of all this stuff for his buisness so i say have a chat with him, he knows more than me.

36% protein, it would work if I double the quantity

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powdered_milk

Though the lactose quantities could be a problem for me, as I'm a little low on a particular en-zine that breaks it down. I'll see what happens

Very different to that stuff. We're not talking steroids here.
My understanding is that you have to be very careful with brand selection because some brands have put steroids into their protein powder in the past in order to get ahead in the market as it is so competitive. Protein powder is typically used by body builders and their primary goal is bulking up, so the addition of steroids can make one brand more appealing than another even if the consumer doesn't know what is in it.

For most people it doesn't matter because they never get drug tested and thus never know what they are consuming. That is the rumour anyhow and if it is not true it has definitely been used as a defence by athletes in the same way Contador is blaming the meat. A few years back a certain masters rider from a certain club in a very well known Sydney based team tested positive for steroids and he claimed he was unaware he was using anything except the protein powder which he bought from asia. It doesn't serve well for anyone to mention who this rider is or who he rode for but most peopl would have known him at RAW.

I need some, I find if I have some after training I don't need to eat again as I have dinner before coming down to the track. I usually get my stuff from http://purenutrition.com.au/

I like plain protein powder that way I can add my own flavours, the winning combination is caramel topping and banana quick.

There's a lot of debate over creatine. From what I've read it seems that increases water retention a little and from a cyclist viewpoint that's extra weight without providing a benefit

Which one do you usually get?

This is the one I have gotten in the past. We put in a big order a couple of years ago but I don't think you get a discount unless you buy the 4.5kg tubs.

I had a look at milk powder at the supermarket, it was $6 for a kilo. At approx 1/3 protein, that works out at about $18 per kilo of protein, a good price.

i have a few friends(male) that were national level gymnasts and that's all they would use.

Regardless of all the claims by the providers, protein is protein. The difference between the products tends to come down to the concentration levels and what's with it.

What is more complex is absorption and timing;
1. The body can only process so much protein at a time
2. It only lasts 4 hours in the body
3. Some carbs are required to be consumed with it

So what does this mean;
1. make sure you have some protein with every meal (chicken, fish, cheese etc)
2. have smaller portions and convert the savings to snacks containing protein
3. have some carbs with the protein

Milk powder, as Lizanne has suggested meets the requirement at a reasonable price and contains all the carbs required and some more.
The commercial the protein powder that we are looking at here is more expensive and comes without the carbs. This gives the flexibility to mix it with whatever is your choice, in my case weetbix - breakfast at work.

I'm going both, providing I can confirm that I'm able to digest the quantity of lactose found in milk powder.

I use maltodextrin to make a cheap electrolyte drink. It's basically a complex carb.

Mixture for 2L (you can vary the sugar contents to suit your taste)
70g Maltodextrin
70g White Sugar
1/4 tsp table salt
1/4 tsp diet salt
3/4 tsp citric acid

The issues with kidneys is where you are consuming a seriously high amount and the body is trying to get rid of the excess.

You don't have to worry about steriods in protein powder made by any reputable brand and sold in Australia... that would be an excuse made by someone who got caught doing the naughty... You do however, have to be very careful with 'pre-workout' formulas and a lot of creatine products. They often contain stimulants which are banned by the UCI.
