Welcome to the 2011 competition. For 2011 the point system has been simplified a little, however the rewards are still there for those who exhibit independence. There are no handicaps for previous winners, its a level playing field apart from a reduced amount of sexual discrimination. Competition period is 1st Jan 2011 until about a week or so before the DHBC 2011 Christmas Party.

But first before the points. some have expressed a desire to count flats, so to cater for this the format is as follows;

02
01.5 Megarider(3)
01
0

Where (3) represents any number you feel fit, there are no rules on what the (n) is used for. However those who want to count physical flats can use this number.

The Rules
Definition: Requirement to replace tube/single due to its inability to maintain air. Valve failure is accepted.
Traveling requirements: Wheel must be ridden on, to deem it to be a separate flat

Basic Points (Gender separated)
Get flat tyre
0.0 male
0.5 female
Repair own flat tyre, ie change the tube
1.0 male
1.0 female

Bonus Points
0.5 Repair another DHBC riders tyre, ie change the tube
0.5 Patch your own tube
0.5 Lend another DHBC rider a tube

Penalty Points
-0.5 Someone else repairs your tyre, ie replaces the tube or tyre
-0.5 Don't return the tube within 14 days
-0.5 Cause of flat is patch failure
-0.5 Pinch the tube putting it on, even if its someone else doing it for you
-1.0 Get a flat while not having a pump or spare tube. Not applicable at the velodrome

To get the 2011 flat tyre season rolling. Had 5 flats on our little tour on Lindsay's "Black Beauty" 2 of which were in 2010, the other 3 in 2011. Borrowed 1 tube from Lindsay. Lindsay helped repair two flats. Simon helped repair one flat.

All I can say is... Sigh. Tomorrow I am putting some durable training tyres on my roadie and I am NOT going to use a training/racing tyre on there again. Over it.

Two flats on the roadie over two days. Changed self, patched one tube, blah blah.

I've made this message a sticky, and removed the sticky from the 2010 flat tyre thread.

ya the tyre was flat, i went away for the weekend and when i came back i noticed half way into work it was flat (not just low tyre pressure, i could press my finger all the way to the rim)
I was half expecting it to be flat again this morning, but still all good.

Not really a flat according to this rule "Definition: Requirement to replace tube/single due to its inability to maintain air. Valve failure is accepted." Tube wasn't replaced, so no flat.

I agree, can't be counted as a flat
definition: Requirement to replace tube/single due to its inability to maintain air. Valve failure is accepted.
Traveling requirements: Wheel must be ridden on, to deem it to be a separate flat
The tube hasn't been repaired or replaced.

i did take the tube out and spend about 15 min trying to find the hole... i then replaced it and went on my way.
common i spent way too much time on the side of the road doing this for it not to count.

I am in with a chance this year I think with 3 flats already! 2 on the roadie and 1 on the MTB which I blame on running into Orphic on my way to work this week. Her bad flat luck must be contagious!

I'm confused over the rules, so work this out. Had a tube with a slow leak so changed it thinking it was a normal puncher, I put the new tube on in a hurry and that tube pinched the rim about 2km down the road and broke so had to change that. I'm down two tubes and I had to change my wheel twice so I'm claiming 2 points unless told differently !

Cheers

I got a flat coming up from Watson's Bay this morning. I did it all by myself except for the last tricky bit of getting the tyre back onto the rim. Struggled with it for maybe 15 mins before some chaps turned up and got the last bit of the tyre back onto the rim and then insisted on CO2ing it for me and then gave me gratuitous advice :) However, as it was my intention to fix it and I did 98% of the fixing the flat by myself; and I had a pump to pump it up ... but by then the heros had taken over, I'm not awarding myself any penalty points on the grounds that it would have been churlish to say "sorry chaps if you pump up my tyre with your fancy canister then I'll lose all my flat tyre points in the club comp," because they might have heard "bugger off you bastions of the patriarchy, I can fix my own tyre." OK?

Two flats on the road this evening, one front one rear. Lucky I was carrying a patch kit as I only had one tube. So had to patch one on the side of the road when I was busting to get home and have some dinner...

How do these flats on track bikes occur? I got a flat at Goulburn and fixed it, raced on it... All was good. Then I find another flat that I had to change before training tonight. Couldn't find the cause, but it definately wouldn't hold air.

I'm using them in the fixie, but I had trouble with the tuffey ends causing flats, so I've booted the tube at that point with an old piece of tube. I've also got some of that liquid stuff you put inside the tubes, but haven't put it in yet

OK, time to start my account. Due to my own laziness/stupidity, I thought it would be a good idea to tour 620km around Tassie (with stretches of gravel) on a pair of worn 23
gatorskins, freshly embedded with shards of glass from the recent NY period. It was not. A total of 5 flats (5). I also changed one of Ted's (0.5) and patched 5 tubes (2.5 - although these are yet to be used so does that count?) Oh, and I get extra points for being a girl (2.5)!

Did you include Ted's penalty for not changing his own tube? That puts Ted on -0.5 points I think
patched 5 tubes (2.5 - although these are yet to be used so does that count?)
If in doubt read the rules http://www.dhbc.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2201 There is no reference as to what happened to the tube after patching it.

+1 Front was flat when I left the gym this morning. I think the cause was the tub rubbing where the joins of the tyre liner meet. Need to boot that area with a piece of tube, like what I have done to the rear

Total / Bike / Wheel / Tyre
1 Focus Front GP4000s chilli
1 Fuji Fixie Front Gatorskin & tyre liner

And Anthony disappeared, so I've put em back in

OK, I can't work the points for this one out. Here's what happened.

I put new tires my commuter/tourer on Saturday (after the Tassie debacle) and this morning pumped them up and rode to uni. At about 2.30, sitting at my desk, I heard the front one explode (my bike was next to me). I had obvioulsy over-pumped. The new tires have a 102 psi rating and I'm used to 120. The only spare tube I had was for an 18-25 mm tire, and the new tire is 28, so I patched the blown tube. It was a nasty spot for a hole though - right next to the valve. Then I didn't have a pump with me, so I tapped into the Usyd DHBC chapter and made a coffee date with Christian. After a bit of a blather we tried fixing the tire. Christian got understandably bored of watching my futile efforts at pumping (combo of crappy pump and a bursitis-ridden shoulder) so took over, but he couldn't get it to inflate either. Thinking the patch hadn't taken (it hadn't) we wandered back to my office and used the 25 mm tube instead. Christian did the whole thing. (Thanks Christian!)

I'm pretty sure i just dropped a few rankings, and certainly know Christian deserves a point or two.

And here's the kicker to the story, which I'm almost too ashamed to admit. I didn't end up riding home! I stayed late and then Ted, who was at a function and had bumped into Richard S. and was driving him home, swung by my office to give me a lift too because it was raining. We shoved the bike in the back seat and I climbed in under it and we all merrily drove off. (Sorry Christian! But who wants to work when you can have coffee anyway).

Let me put this in Tabloid Newspaper speak, you know the one the acha-demis deny ever reading (since they removed boobs from page 3)
Got a flat - boom
Patched it
Patch failed
Christian put another tube in
There was acha-demis travel insest organised by Ted

How many bonus points do you get for blowing both front and rear on the one pothole.

Hit the offending crater on King St in the city this morning and soon found out that the the bike doesn't handle so well at speed with no air in either tyre!

Didn't fall but it did get the pulse racing for a while.

Went down at lunchtime to see WTF I hit.

In the middle of the intersection of King and George St (near the Apple Store) some bright spark had saw cut a long rectangular trench in the road surface and after finishing their work this was backfilled using a soft asphalt mix. The soft asphalt had become compressed leaving a 2 inch vertical sharp face on the original sawcut line which nicely pinch flatted both tyres.

Called Sydney City Council and hopefully it will be fixed shortly but keep a look out when commuting up King St heading towards Macquarie.

Random (rear) commuting flat Friday night, plus five previous flats (at Amy's ride, also on way home from Amy's ride, random commuting flat about a month ago, two flats on M7 one due to a blown valve) I keep forgetting to list.
But today my front wheel developed a wobble on the descent from waterfall today. Wobble turned into a consistent knock-knock-knock and I was thinking I'd done a wheel. But no - I had a bulging tyre/tube about the size of a cocktail frankfurter. Nursed it down to Sutherland and was gently but firmly red-carded by the binch. Hopped on the train, made it home the 1km from Sydnenham and about 10 minutes after I arrived home ---- BANG! We thought a picture had fallen off the wall but it was actually this happening:

Image

Given that I had just big-ringed it down from Waterfall on it, I feel that I well and truly dodged a bullet.

Richard - road workers did exactly the same thing at the bottom of Audley Street a while back, in the roundabout outside Petersham Station: cut a bathtub-sized hole in the cement, filled it with asphalt which immediately subsided 4-6 inches, leaving a big, deep and very sharp-edged trench. Mike Clement got a double flat I think; Camilla did the same and went over the handlebars. God knows how many others cyclists got caught, since it was an almost-perfect trap: the roundabout's on a slight rise so the hole was camouflaged, and you tend to be looking at traffic rather than the road at that point. Despite being reported it took a couple of months to fix.

Two flats on the way back from Waterfall. Someone will need to check the maths, but I think it is -2 for not having a spare tube (oops), -0.5 for Stuart replacing the first tube and +1 for replacing my own the second time = -1.5. Thanks to Douglas for the loan of tubes and the 25's in general for hanging around in the rain and cold.

I'll be changing the rear tyre to a Gatorskin as well so hopefully I will have fewer punctures (and less chance to gain points). Hope your taking good care of it Timmy as the spoon could soon be mine !!!!!

I'm joining in...
way too much with too few tubes

so got two pinch flats on a pot hole.
had one tube + one with a hole (i didn't know...) Borrowed all the stuff to fix one wheel. Got a friend to donate a tube later in that day. didn't have a spanner to remove my wheelnut. went home on the train. tube at home was too big, stole one from spare wheel, pinched the tube :( took another one from another bike, valve was already dodgy and didn't hold air. removed tube from my front wheel. WIN took fron wheel from spare bike. today... the (ususally)useless boyfriend fixed my front tube. neither of the pinched tubes can be patched. and my hands are still black.
so that's
+1 for 2 flats
+2 for the repairs
-.5 for boyfriend fixing one
-.5 for not returning a tube
-.5 for pinching a tube
-2 for not having the right stuff (twice)

luckily i'm a chick! or i'de be winning the wodden spoon with this one.

Double flat from hitting a trench in the road a week or so ago. Yesterday two more on the way to work. Green glass = flat 1 Clear glass = flat 2. Bugger was that I chewed up the side wall of the tyre before I could stop.

OK, this gets interesting. After racing on Sunday Morning, I discovered that both of my tubes had been taken. What happened was that Lindsay had used my tubes to fix Amy's bike.
So the points are;
Mikebytes 1 (Lend another DHBC rider a tube 0.5 * 2)
Lindsay 1 (Repair another DHBC riders tyre, ie change the tube 0.5 *2)
kiwiamies 1 (Female get flat 0.5 *2)

The question above, is the definition of "Lend". As far as I can see, I'm still lending the tubes, even if its done without my knowledge

Now this is where it gets interesting kiwiamies is returning the value of the tubes in iced coffees. So where does that fit the following rule or not?
-0.5 Don't return the tube within 14 days

I'll leave the points as they are for now, as I'm sure we are going to debate this one

I believe the returning of the "tube" must be determined by the person who lent it. So, if you're happy to have your tubes returned in the form of iced coffees, then it's returned.

Got a flat in the park this morning just as it started to rain. Apologies to all those who had to stand around in the cold (13 degrees) and rain (lots) waiting for me - very nice of you!, and to Toff for glass extraction from the tyre and Mike for loaning me a 700 tube which I then squashed into the 650 tyre.

My flats have been spread evenly between 4 bikes, and the last two have been tyres that seem to have been in the wheel for years! totally stuck in!

Anyone looking to increase their flat tire count you’d be wise to head down the Cooks River cycleway. About 50m nth of the Canterbury Rd underpass is a fine piece of sculpture in the form of a burnt out car. The artist(s) responsible have graciously left about half a metre of path for cyclists, and the glass and general debris has been distributed with a generous flair

not good for the river or the people who lost their cars, but its the Marrickville i grew up in :)

Bonus Points
0.5 Lend another DHBC rider a tube
This I did twice on the weekend, lending a tube to Peter O. However, it wasn't because Peter O had a flat, it was because, Peter O had forgotten to bring spare tubes

My first flat for the year - a big staple picked up on Marrickville Rd about 0640 this morning (running late). Repaired it (+1.0) outside The Shop Formerly Known As Mick Mazza's, then off to CP and 7 times up the bloody hill.

[saw the burnt out car still on the bike path on my way home. Because I'd already used my tube that morning, did the cyclocross thing by picking up the bike and clip-clopping past as per Lizanne's recommendation.]

repaired the tube this afternoon. (+0.5)

First one on the way out to Waterfall, appeared to be an intrusion puncture and the intrusion was gone. Second one on the way back. Second inspection discovered a hole in the sidewall next to the rim. Booted it with a $5 note, got a couple of K's and it went down again, turned out I hadn't done the boot correctly. Bludged a tube of a RBCC rider, booted and put it together just as Lindsay's group went past. 1k thurther Lindsay got a flat (nail), so I waited for him and worked on riding him back onto the bunch, but then we came upon 2 slower riders and Lindsay stayed with them. 4th flat returning from the coffee shop about 3/4k from home, so I walked it. Haven't looked at it yet, but you can guess...

Well it was an epic ride for lots of people today with at least 11 flats that I know about and broken spoke(s). The C25s had the worst of it, although Mike had his own travails.

I got one flat on the mad mile, that I fixed myself, with some assist from Peter T because while I did everything else, I'm just not strong enough to get the tyre back onto the 650 rim. He also helped pump it, but worried me because he put the tyre down on the bit of cliff where I had carefully hidden the whopping bit of brown glass I had just extracted from the tyre

Slow leak started on the way to work. Riding home wondering why the steering worked better in one direction than the other as they tyre was deflated rather than flat before I realised why.

Get the race bike out for Tomorrow (Mudgee) and the rear is flat. Latex tube. Lucky it didn't happen at last weekend's ITT, must of just made it.

some thing or other happened, chain ended off and through the spokes, 30 or 40 meter fish tail skid through the tyre etc.

2 flat tyres today, no tubes (fail) fortunately got a 650 from Marian for the first but another flat meant a folded 700. Geoff helped with the first one and Christian just did the second with a tube borrowed from Stuart while I just acted, well, like a bit of a girl.

a nail went thru the tyre and also punched a hole in the rim.

I had to go to the bike shop and buy patches and leavers. Normally I can rip the tyre off, but I didn't want to try that while I have a broken rib
