I managed to get the DHBC Theme back up and running. I have also set it up so that it is the only theme in use. It overides whatever you as a user have set.

Also, there are only English language icons, so I hope no one wants to use the forum in a language other than English, because you will be out of luck.

Let me know if you see any issues with the template (i.e. repeated sections).

Thanks

James

Am I the only one who thinks that the logo for the forum is out of place? Should we try and have a logo similar to what we have on the jerseys and the website?

I think we're going to put out the challenge to come up with something more modern for the web page, it's a bit dull really. So maybe that will be relate to this page too..

It would be nice to have the same logo for everything, website, jerseys etc. I like the design on the newer jerseys with the two pennies facing each other, and think it would look good on the website. I guess if the whole thing is going to be integrated it will depend at least partly on what the design on the next batch of jerseys will be..

If the logo on the new batch of Jerseys changes from the current Jersey then the current one may as well go in the Bin as it won't able to be raced if the new batch is registered. So essentially the design can't change...

Why not use that design for the basis of the website design?

No, but the logo and heading are out of alignment.

I'd go for the same or similar to the home page, to keep them consistant.

Any chance of a link back to the home page?

One potential link location would be in the location tree ie. Dulwhich Hill Bicycle Club -> Forum Index -> Conversation.

I reckon we should have the Logo as the link back to the home page, considering there's already a link to the forum index.

In either case, I have changed the logo at the top of the page.

Comments?

For those who are observant, I have added a link back to dhbc.org.au on the forum index, within each Forum, and within each topic.

I don't know if we need to add it elsewhere.

I am going to look at overhauling the template completely, so new look and feel, new buttons etc.

I was going to go for a Red on Black/Dark Grey theme

I was stuffing around with the logo last night.

What do you think?

http://www.jamescheetham.net/dhbc

As I design new buttons etc, I will upload them to that site and report it here.

Wow, much more modern. I like it.

Only one comment, the flare over text can be somewhat distracting, especially the one over the letter B.

I will have another go at trying to get it better, probably reduce the size of the flare and where the artifacts end up.

OK

2nd Logo uploaded. Main difference is that the flare is smaller and on a different angle.

I think I need to get the font better, it seems a bit fuzzy to me.

I have also uploaded two different buttons, don't these are two examples button style that I stole from else where.

Which do you prefer, or do you have other suggestions? This would be the style for all of the graphic buttons on he forum (i.e. new topic, post reply etc), the small buttons (quote, edit, pm etc) would be the same style but smaller.

I need to work out the icons for the forum (new messages, no new messages forum locked as you see on the Forum Index) and for the Forum Topics.

More additions.

I have added some forum icons. The first three (which actually look like folders) I took from an icon site, the next two I constructed myself.

While the first three look a lot more professional, I am loathe to use them as this doesn't quite constitute personal use.

As for the other two, do you feel that they look too similar? What can I do to make them more different?

ps: lucky I am already a moderator, or I would probably get banned for spamming this topic...

Looks much better with smaller flares. But from a strictly optical point of view, flares should only exist in a single direction.

One other item. The letter H/B/C seemed to be off-centre with respective to the circles surrounding them.

More testing.

To save you scrolling back up here is the link again.

http://www.jamescheetham.net/dhbc/

I have added a third logo, moved away from the flare and tried something else. I have also straightened up the letters in the circles, so any future logos I try will be better orientated.

There is a third button, which has a sort of 3d feel to it. I need to choose a suitable font, but I like the button style, I think that it will give the page a modern feel without going over the top.

I have put up some fancy icons for the forum, the last three which show new posts, no new posts and new posts in a popular thread. I think that they look pretty good and unless there are strong objections that is what I am planning on using in the new theme.

I'm with Lindsay. First one looks the best.

2nd one with the smaller flare makes me feel there's no need to it at all.
3rd one looks pretty funky, though probably a bit too far out there.

I have updated the display site with a heap of new icons as well as another logo.

The initial page has now become an index and I have split the site into three pages, logos, icons and old icons.

The logos are for the top of the page, icons for the various icons and buttons that are around on the forum, and old icons for the few that I had an attempt at/stole before I decided on a theme.

I had another attempt at the top style logo, with a few differences. See if you prefer the 3rd one over the first.

As far as the logos go, I like the last one, but I can understand other peoples reluctance as it is a bit "out there".

Thanks

James

I change my vote to the 3rd one. The bigger text makes it a lot clearer, and no polygon flare over the circles is good.

The reason i don't like the last one as much is i'd prefer things to remain recognised, and the black text just doesn't fit in. I think it's best to keep it similar to other ideas around, like the jerseys, otherwise we'll end up with a different logo for everything.

The buttons look good as well.

I think it would be best to have a unified logo across the site, the forum and the jerseys. If the jersey design isn't changing, then we should use that. Maybe you can get an original copy and make a gif or do a new jpg without as much aliasing noise.

Lens flare is a bit.... passe.

I am always the first to admit that I am out of touch.

Is there another effect that you would suggest Damain? Alternatively, if there is anyone else with Photoshop/GIMP skills feel free to have a shot yourselves.

The next step in all of this is to learn CSS so I can start constructing the actual pages.

I will see how I go.

I'd suggest none. As I said, the point of a logo and branding is to be consistent and to be an identifier. To that end, you don't want to have one thing on the jersey and another on the website. If the jersey design is staying, then we should go with that.

I'd try to get a higher quality copy of the logo so you can get it cleaner on the web. See how it looks smudgy ? That's because the jpg is compressed a bit much. Gif is a better format for this sort of thing because it is a low number of colours and they are in big blocks. JPG is a better format for photos.

I'm not trying to critisise your design skills at all, I have none and gave up trying to design anything years ago :)
