Today the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in a dulwich hill jersy! I got my short black for just 2 bux instead of 2.50 because i was wearing a our jersy :D

I was on the way back from out tuesday morning interval cruise, and stopped in there in the 5 mins spare before leaving for work :D but yeah, maybe a certain amount of my viguor is caused by the short black i just had, but yeah, i was impressed :D

It's a worry.

I've been charged $5.50, $5.00 and $4.50 on three consecutive weekends for the same chocolate milkshake. They just shrugged their shoulders when I asked why I was overcharged or undercharged on different occasions.

So it's worth double checking their bill as some of their staffs are not quite with it.

Yes, it's very good that the owner is recognizing our club and good for you. But maybe it was just a refund for the overcharges his staffs have made in the past.

First time ($5 instead of $4.50) I can ignore but the second time with a further increase ($5.50 instead of $4.50) the following week was not acceptable.

I wouldn't get too excited over this cafe until there's some consistency demonstrated in their performance.

I taught the owner's son last year. He's a good guy.
He gave me some really nice CapoForma stuff for Christmas!
I'm pretty sure he's not trying to rip anybody off.

I didn't suggest the owner was, but some staffs were inadequately trained and supervised. The effect on the customer is the same though.

The Girls are young and its busy and they get mixed up I think - they are very pleasant - I gave them a run down on the DHBC groups as they inquired - like Sat slowies and yes its the same club but on sunday we do 90ks and she said: - "your just showing off now"... wonderful

Think your being a bit harsh on 'em Weiyun. The owner of the cafe is a top bloke and I think the staff are very friendly, though they make the occasional mistake... they are friendly, genuine and respectful., and that the most important part of the deal... at least in hospitality, As a small business owner I know how hard it is to get good staff ..and even harder to keep on top of everything they do. Running a cafe would be a nightmare and I reckon the cafe owner's doing a pretty good job on prob. very limited funds. For Tim to get a discount because of his jersey , demonstrates a great deal of goodwill by the owner...and to see such gestures these days is great. I'll take genuine service over "perfection". Now I shall step down from my soapbox.

No deny that the staffs are friendly and respectful and the cafe has a great location. But my statements were also strictly factual.

I don't so much care about the 50c and $1 over charge as that's well within the amount of tip one gives on discretion. But the fact of the matter is, basic errors were made repeatedly and there was no apology nor attempt to correct the error. So for me, that's the perception I have of the cafe. Maybe I should stop ordering choc milkshakes.

Unfortunately, any business is only as good as the people it uses, no different for small businesses. So I do not see anything inappropriate to say that there needs to be better training and supervision of the staffs. I am also sure if the owner was there, it would have been different.

PS. This series of factual events have nothing to do with how good a bloke the owner is. That was never the issue.

Certainly, if only the customer knew there was a mistake.

I have never seen a menu at that cafe and never found choc milkshake on the blackboard. I have always trusted the staffs for charging the correct amount until this series of experience.

I think that the staff at the cafe is tops. When we arrive in big numbers and create a mini chaos, they are never fazed and are always glad to see us. Much better service than we got at Bobos.

Jo, I am not trying to talk down the cafe but pointing out a factual deficiency there. Per any business, it's something they can improve on to make it even better. Blanketing factual deficiencies would not help the future of the business.

There's no question that they are friendly with good attitude, but I would hardly call them "tops" given,

1) Bill errors.
2) Number of times they ignored requests for another bottle of water.
3) Errors in the order, either missed or as MickL pointed out, inability to handle special orders.

As for not getting fazed by a large group... Err, why would they? They just write down the order as we call them out and leave it to us to remember what we ordered. I would hardly call that stress. Now, if they can remember who ordered what when the orders are served, then that's skill and would typically attract big tips.

Marrickville Rd cafe... Nice location, pleasant staff, good coffee and milkshake, but just check the bill. There's nothing biased about it.

Good news,

One of the owners Sasha and I have had a series of discussions and he is developing a loyalty program proposal which should earn us a minimum of $1250 per annum based on current patronage, and even more, for more business provided through us, and our friends. Stay tuned, we are about 4 to 6 weeks off making further announcements!

Ok, my saga of chocolate milk shake continues... This morning at the post-Sat Slowies cafe stop I was charged $4.50. Without me making any comment, I saw the waitress look up a price list behind the counter before informing me of the bill. This is way too weird!

actually, on a day like today, to be charged what the listed price is was very weird.

Today was a public holiday in the morning, so cafe's etc can charge a 10% surcharge. If anything, you got your milkshake cheap today.

Because 1) I don't know what the correct amount is. 2) I didn't expect it to be $4.50 after past experiences, thinking that the correct price has gone up to $5.00. Anyway, I'll wait to see what they charge on my next order before a more in-depth enquiry. I am really curious as to how the price of a simple chocolate shake can vary b/n $4.50 to $5.50 from week to week. Or has it turned into a financial market indicator... "The Shake Indicator"?

Till 1pm ?

Does that mean that I was ripped off getting a 10% surcharge on the pizza I had for dinner?

Maybe the price is a function of bike value. So if your on a Cell you get charged $1.50 and if you are on a Colnago with Campag Super Record its $10 dollars.

I must say the service this morning was quite good (for me at least)
I orderred at one end of the group and sat at the other end when my cofee & food came it was brought straight to me.
Also when I went to pay the waitress remembered what I had. Although I have no idea if I was charged the correct price or not.

So, what's the price of milkshakes on the menu then? Has anyone actually looked? Is there a price or do they just do milkshakes and charge whatever they feel like at the time as it seems?

Have never come across a menu there and every time at the cashier, I could never find milkshake listed on the overhead menu board. I'll have to try harder next time.

The saga continues...

I visited the cafe today, and I went in and ordered a caramel milkshake and paid for it on the spot. The girl clocked up $5.50 on the till and I said that I thought they were only $4.50, she then charged me that.

Glad that I wasn't the only one receiving their "favouritism".

From the left field. Was this inflated pricing an enforced tip? Given the way how our orders are paid, the waitresses won't typically receive any tips.

In Australia, we don't have a tipping culture, their staff would be paid the minimum wage at least. As it is a Sunday, they would be paid something like 1.5 their standard wage anyway.

Here, I feel that we should only tip if you feel that the service/food was good enough to deserve a tip.

Personally, if they can't get the prices right, then they don't deserve a tip.

For two consecutive Sundays, the lady boss of the cafe has been in attendance. Menu has been out on each table with a good supply of bottled water. Specific clarifications were made for the $4.50 choc milkshake and I note that smoothies are $5.50.

Good response by the cafe! Image

Seeing as I am sitting in a hotel room whilst stuart is doing all the hard work and packing and organising our departure..I feel I have to have a say in this over worked thread.

I am with Tim - point out the price....Milkshake isn't on the menu, there are different kids serving us all the time, and we swarm on the cafe in pretty large numbers. I reckon these girls get paid a very small fraction of any of our wages and they do not overcharge to be spiteful but it is obviously a very "loose" guess. So if you are not happy with the price of a milkshake....use that voice that you are all blessed with when there is some thing on the forum you think is worth mentioning...but use it to the cafe staff and eventually they will get the message.

That is it...I'm off the soap box. Also remember since we are all wearing DHBC shirt......doesn't hurt to be nice when you tell them.

Avoir every one!!!

Jo, you are a quite a few days late on your message,

1) The issue was never about not happy with the price of the shake but the inconsistency of it. People would not care if it was $6 or $8, as long as it was good. But just don't charge differently from day to day.

2) As said earlier, there were no menu to check on the price.

3) When questioned about the price discrepancy, the waitresses reaffirmed those irregular prices. Not questioning them further was already an act of respect.

In any case, the thread is now done and can be closed as we have finally got the words from the lady boss that a choc milkshake is $4.50. She has affirmatively accepted that consistency and correct billing is the responsibility of the cafe and its employees.

Au revoir et c'est fini!

oK - Glad that thread is done. I am exited - I actually get to go on a bike tomorrow !!! Yu think $4.50 for a milkshake at Dulwich Hill is expensive, have some sympathy for me in France...a milkshake here would be at least $15aud minimum - with the usual coffee being $6 AUD. I just paid $20 for 2 baguettes with chicken and tomato...OUCH!! Us Australians have so got it made!!!!

Yu think $4.50 for a milkshake at Dulwich Hill is expensive, have some sympathy for me in France...
As said multiple times, it's not about the amount but accuracy and consistency.

Anyway, spending big on food in France is always a pleasure. Don't forget steak tartare!

Yes I agree. When I think about accuracy and consistency, it's not the Germans or the Swiss I think of... It's the French :!:

That's definitely weird! But glad you didn't bring the Italians in.

The Italians are the most consistent of all. It's not always what you want, but it's definitely consistent. I recall arriving at Rome airport at something like 4.30 in the morning. Someone had to wake up the customs clerk so he could stamp our passports. I would have been surprised if this wasn't the case!

Another story... I know of a fellow who wanted to restore an old frame from a well known Italian frame builder. He wrote a letter to the framebuilder and posted it off to Italy. The letter explained what he was doing, and asked for some information on how the original bike would have looked like. Anyway, there was no reply from Italy for over 3 months. Then one day a big package arrived in the post. The package came from the frame builder, and it contained lots of old catalogues and pictures of frames in their original condition, as well as a set of period correct original decals to go on the bike. All sent free of charge, but unfortunately too late to go underneath the clearcoat of the recently repainted frame...

So typical of the Italian way. :?

What is the point of the photo of Mike and Co standing on their heads? To prove who has the best abbs, balance or talent for doing the most ridiculous thing on a Sunday morning? My bet is Mike stayed up the shortest time given Gee has all that hair to use as a pillow.

I would love to get a hot bacon and egg wrap - the thing is they add salad and the salad is from the fridge and this then cools the wrap, the wrap concept is just a marketing ploy which is subtracting from the need for hot food - i want it hot

BTW G, do you have a leg length discrepancy? Or didn't you stretch your left leg properly during the headstand? If so, that's a 0.5 technical point deduction.

Fake. It originated from Specialized's web site.

Short video to record the fantastic turnout we had yesterday after Waterfall.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBuLuECAXmk

Otherwise they never brought out my chocolate milkshake despite being the one of the first to order and asking the waitress. Our numbers must be overwhelming the staffs.

Stuart, is embedding of Youtube videos allowed on this forum?

Yeh I saw two huge DHBC bunches was I was returning on the mad mile. Probably lucky that not everyone went for coffee.

There was a scattering of DHBC riders for about 3k after the two bunches, like the tail of a comet.
