Fixie Century 2015!!! Oct 18

Hold onto your caps! It's DHBC Fixie Century time of year!!!

Sunday October 18
2015 will see the 9th edition of this infamous ride: an imperial century (161kms) from Bundanoon to the Tempe Velodrome (then onto the German Club for a well earned beer or 3). We'll either go via Wollongong or take the Picton route. We can vote on that later!

Most participants chose to stay in the Bundanoon Hotel on the Saturday night (c $55 p.p) and dine in their bistro:

http://www.bundanoonhotel.com.au/

A number of rooms have been put on hold at the hotel. Once we've got numbers I'll confirm everything, so no need to ring them directly.

If anyone would like to act as support (i.e. drive the route, carry the riders' bags back to Sydney and pick up anyone who blows up along the way) that would be sensational! A donation from all riders is requested to help cover the support driver's accommodation & petrol costs. It is possible to share this role, so that you can do some riding too.

Entry requirements:
• Must have a cycling Australia recognized license and be part of an Australian bike club and if not a DHBC member must be able to prove such before starting
• Must be 18+ years of age and fit enough to complete the designated distance (strong 28s riders and above, with a penchant for endurance). If you haven’t before ridden a Fixie Century don't be offended if we ask you a few questions
• If any known medical conditions must consult your General Practitioner on your health and be cleared to start

Bike requirements:
• All bikes must be fixed with one single gear. Gears can be changed if a flip flop hub is available during ride. No freewheels allowed
• All bikes must have 2 working brakes and enough brake pad to be safe
• Steel is real baby.

Ride Rules:
• All riders must comply with road rules at all times
• All riders are responsible for their own safety and if not up to the distance must get themselves home
• Riders must comply with bunch rules and ride rules when needed
• Australian standard helmet must be worn at all times, by all riders

For anyone out there like me who hasn't ridden a fixie before, I'm pretty sure that this video pretty much sums up what it is all about.

Yep - we do all that, and more. But outdoors and with a helmet on because this is Australia. :-)

Not clear from the video, but it's probably actually Lindsay or Eleri in the billiard room on the Saturday night beforehand at Bundanoon after five or so pints.

Hello, for those of you visiting this thread from the newsletter, it included a couple of mistakes I'd just like to clarify:

1. this is the 9th edition
2. we did the Picton route last year & will do it again this year, by popular demand
3. Breakfast will be in Bowral

See the top post for full details!

I'm keen guys but only run a front brake (my bike doesn't have a hole for a rear) is that acceptable or make me ineligible?

You need to have working front & rear brakes. It's a long ride on the road - effective brakes are a legal and practical necessity.

Cheers,
Andrew

I'm going to be driving Eleri's car so if anyone wants to drop a bag around at mine to take down let me know. And of course I can bring all the bags back too. I'm currently scouting for someone to share the support driving with, so if there's anyone out there who only feels up to riding a portion of the distance let me know.

We're going the Picton route, btw, which is roughly this:
http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/501478116

I know there are still a few people out there who are intending on coming. Please put your name on the list asap as i have to confirm numbers with the Bundanoon hotel.

My car can take 4 bikes on the roof* and possibly one in the back with the wheels off - depends how many people and bags are in the car.

Some people will go up on the train so we can either take a bike and you can take a bag or a bag and you take your bike on the train. But there is a limit to how many bikes you can stack on the train.

*requires tall person to put the bikes on the roof. This is not me.

There is track work. The train is still running to Moss Vale however it could be running upto 15 minutes late and more importantly, it is running via Regents park. This is not reflected on the timetable, it is not clear where/if the train stops, for example Strathfield.

Unless more info comes my way, I'll be catching the 2.54pm train from Central arriving at Moss Vale at 5.23pm (+ upto 15 min). There's a bus at 5.45pm arriving at Bundanoon at 6.06pm if you don't feel like riding.

http://www.sydneytrains.info/service_up ... 2128FCDDD6

If anyone wants to start the weekend with a Pilates class, I've got one at 10.30 at 5Dock, can get you in. And I could be talked into catching a train from Strathfield such as the 12.14 one to Campbelltown/Macarther, which would leave enough time for a bite to eat before catching the 2.04pm train to Moss Vale

Also I've figured out where the error was that put us on the busy and hilly Henry Lawson Drive. There's a footbridge next to the railway tracks over saltpan creek

Hi Camilla,

I don't have a fixed gear bike. Would it be acceptable, nevertheless, to participate / join your ride with my normal road bike? Just want to understand how stringent the rules are re: bike requirements. I could promise not to change gears during the ride?

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul, sorry, we're actually pretty strict about that one rule: you need to be fixed. That said, surely someone could lend you a fixie? It would be great if you could come.

Paul, you're welcome to borrow mine as I'm unable to go this year. It is too big for me but you'd be welcome to borrow it and have a go.

Part of the joy of the Fixie Century is being able to lament with one another the chafing and tired legs. Unfortunately you just wouldn't suffer the same on a standard roadie.

Bistro is booked for 7pm.

Don't forget to pack your butt cream! Toff is still unsure of his weekend commitments so we may be without the communal minty fresh wax stick.

Paul, are you in?

Last chance to put your name on the list! Or indeed take it off. I'm confirming names & numbers with the Bundanoon Hotel today.

I'll ride to Bowral with you all for breakfast then go back & get the car & all our bags & meet you on the road - hopefully just the other side of Picton to commune with the 12 tribes and contemplate Old Razor back.

It's about 25 kms to Bowral so those of you who require feulling prior to a ride remember to bring a pre-breakfast snack! We'll try and get away at a decent (but not obscene) hour.

I'm reckoning on catching the T2 at Platform 6, Strathfield at 14:44

This, according to transportnsw.info, lobs one at Campbelltown Station (Platform 1) at 15:45, allowing a leisurely 19 minutes to get one's arse to Campbelltown Station (Platform 4), for the 16:04 Southern Highlands Line, arriving Moss Vale 17:23 (with Mike, if he sticks to Plan A, above).

This would then be followed by a 20km-ish bike trip to Bundanoon, allowing plenty of time to freshen and frock up before dinner in the bistro at 1900.

(There is also a 17:45 bus from Moss Vale, arriving 18:06 at Bundanoon, but I have no idea if they would take a bike also.)

Andrew

PS does anyone have the key to the velodrome for the triumphant lap on our return?

I have a lot of fond memories of Bundanoon as I spent a lot of time there as a kid, hopefully I can have a little snoop around and take some pics when we arrive
