Inaugural Rookwood Necropolis Crit - 14 Sept

In a surprise development we’ve been given the opportunity to hold a Criterium race at Rookwood Cemetery as part of their forthcoming Open Day on September 14. There is the possibility that this can lead to a regular event so the committee is very keen to make the first race a success. Anyone who has cycled through Rookwood will be aware that is a very large site, with a lot of roads of varying condition. We’ve selected a 1,600m circuit that has a small hill, a few technical corners and a hotmix start/finish line. All we need now is you!

Course opens at 7am with Juniors racing up first and graded seniors. We'll run as many grades as we need so please put your hand up if you will be attending. This will be a DHBC only event as there are two other big events on the day unfortunately.

Here's the route:
In
In

BUT - the great news is that there'll be a free breakfast afterwards, put on by Rookwood Cemetery Trust. They are keen and we are keen.

So - who is in?

And - who can help on the day?

Unfortunately I am away doing a triathlon.

But when I started with the club these club crits were a monthly feature and a lot of fun so I heartily recommend everyone to give it a go.

NOTE: this is in school holidays, clashes with Waratah Masters Ashfield Cycles/Specialized Cup and with Amy's Gran Fondo.

Unfortunate, but that's the way it is.

Clockwise or anti?

Re: Inaugural Rookwood Necropolis Crit - 14 September

by Eleri
Anti-clockwise. The downhill is the hot mix - uphill on the rougher, narrower road.
Be careful on the turn into Weekes on the way up. There's a culvert we'll have to mark.

Sounds like fun. I'm in. Is there any idea on gradings at the moment?
Will it follow Waterfall bunches: A = Fasties, B = Middies, C = 28s, D = 25s

Grades will depend on numbers and who turns up on the day I reckon and most likely to be self-graded by consultation.

I assume there will a bunch ride to get out there so we're warmed up a bit? What time and what will the route be?

I know you can go on the Cooks River Bike Path all the way really but there may be faster routes?

I would, but I may drive too - depends really. I'll have a look at some maps. Lots of fastish riders on the bike path is not a good idea I don't think, especially on the return leg.

Did some dead reckoning today. A few nasty potholes on the last climb might need filling or marking, and a sunken access cover on the final sprint. The real fun though will be those two turns at the bottom of the descent, especially the one before the final climb, I guess that's what's known as "technical". It's going to be a great day.

Re: Inaugural Rookwood Necropolis Crit - 14 September

Posted: 30 Jul 2014, 17:18
by Stuart
I'm definitely planning on getting out there before the day, just to check it out ya know. I love technical corners :-)

Re: Inaugural Rookwood Necropolis Crit - 14 September

Posted: 30 Jul 2014, 17:21
by Eleri
That nasty pothole on the final sprint will be coned. It's got a water main access point or something. But the road is wide enough.

I think we can get the holes patched and that corner before the final climb - yes, it's got a culvert that nothing can be done about, except slow down or something.

It will depend on numbers Simon. We've got a committee meeting this Thursday and will sort out a few details. After that I'll probably call for entries via the forum and we'll grade after that.

Re: Entries open Inaugural Rookwood Necropolis Crit - 14 Sep

Posted: 09 Aug 2014, 14:02
by Eleri
Entries are open and will close on Sun 7th September.

Entry fee will be $10 payable on the day - juniors and seniors.
No entry and nominate your grade here = no free breakfast and no guarantee of a ride.
We need to know grades and numbers so we can organise the event to run smoothly.
Race Director and Club Handicapper will shift grades if we think you are in the wrong grade.
If there are insufficient numbers we may combine grades.
Length/time of crits will be determined by the number of grades we need to run.
Some grades may be on the course at the same time.
Cash prizes determined by entry levels.
If you don't have a racing licence you can still race if you purchase a day licence, available on the day from the race directors.
Rookwood will put on a free breakfast for all registered participants at 9am.

Please keep this thread for questions only. Entries will be over on the .

First question. I've never raced a crit or a graded race , where do I start?

Re: Inaugural Rookwood Necropolis Crit - 14 Sept

Posted: 09 Aug 2014, 16:12
by Eleri
Put yourself in C Grade for now and we'll see how it shakes out.

Unless your question is "how do I race?" in which case, that's a whole discussion.

by andrewm
Seriously? C grade for Philip? And John Healy? I agree those 2 should be in the same grade, but they are not middies. Maybe not "genuine" fasties, but they can both ride of the front of the middies bunch pretty much at will. If they are c grade standard, then d grade is for middies and below. Which might be a little intimidating for the 28s.

by James Rogers
Here's a suggestion for grades, just in case anyone is playing along at home, not quite the same speeds as some other crits (although similar to Southern Cross' club crits):
c25s - D grade
c28s - C grade
Middies - B grade
Fasties - A grade

Reluctantly, I agree. :(

Sadly fixies arent allowed in crits, but you could ride a single speed with front and back brakes.

As they're juniors (or just in D grade) is there any roll out restrictions on their road bikes that I have to make adjustments for?

Did you remember those rollouts off the top of your head, Matt?

Re: Inaugural Rookwood Necropolis Crit - 14 Sept

by jcaley
I don't think the club enforces junior rollout limits if they are riding in the graded race unless they are still competing for age group placings (Despite not getting their own start). That's been our experience at Heffron and Southern Cross. Matt, some of the juniors are already riding gears for the next higher age group rollout in preparation for the NJTS round 1 in Sydney which is after 1 Oct.

Okie doke, false alarm: there'll be no rollout limits for juniors.

Any advice on what route we ride out from Marrickville to Rookwood? (Bike path would be simplest, but maybe not with that many riders.) Some of us may want to join partway along.

I'm being asked annoying questions pertaining to domestic duties which I hope to fend off with some authority once I understand when I need to show up and for how long...

I'll aim to out up a draft schedule tonight. But it might be tomorrow. However as a rough guide - leave Marrickville on bikes at 6:20. Arrive Rookwood 7:00. Racing finished about 8:45am for all grades. Presentations then complimentary breakfast at 9:00am. Eat. Talk race rubbish. Ride back to the 'Ville at your leisure or with one of several bunches.

Essential facts

If you are racing you must bring your CA licence card. And your $10 entry plus $33 if you need a day race licence. Cash only.

6:20am Ride out to warm up - leaving the new start point near the Post Office square in Marrickville Road at 6:20am. 2 bunches: C25s and a faster bunch
6:45 -7:00am Unassigned volunteers arrive and see Eleri for a job (all welcome on the day)
7:00am Sign on starts and track open for warmup, familiarisation
7:15 Juniors race
7:30 C & D start
8:10 A & B start
8:55 racing finished
9:00 breakfast at the Reflections Cafe - all welcome.

Where does the race start?
See the map in the newsletter.
Enter in the Strathfield entry (that's the one closest to the Cooks River cycle path)
Turn left into Memorial Avenue (you'll see the Reflections cafe on the corner)
Then you should see the course but if not, bear left into Barnet Avenue and the start is at the carpark near the Catholic Office and buildings. There are toilets there.
Sign on and marshalling area is in the car park.

If you are volunteering and have an iPad or vid recorder, please bring it we would like someone to video the finishes. This will assist if there is a close finish.

Please bring a hat and sun protection - you will most likely be standing or sitting in the sun if you are a course marshall. This is a great job btw - you'll be on a corner and get to see the race up close.

Hi Stuart,
Geoff and Peter Bownes were discussing it this morning, but I don't know that any final decision was made.

Geoff and the slower bunch (at least) will head towards Georges River Road.

I have arranged to meet Geoff and the slower bunch near the corner of McCall Ave and Georges River Road. I'm expecting them to be there about 0640 or shortly afterwards.

Looks like we'll go Illawarra, Warren, Ewart, Crinian, Queen, Armstrong, Holden, Palace, Milton, Georges River, Coronation, The Boulevarde, Albyn, Chalmers, Barker, Necropolis.

Great day, didn't hurt a bit! Next time I might try riding. There were a lot of riders giving everything they had and then some. It was actually great to watch for once and not ride, really inspiring. From kids to fellow old guys, some really gutsy rides. It's a shame there's not a way to reward effort, because there were some amazing efforts today. Some of the pictures I took today will start appearing on Instagram over the next few days, @le_masurier. I took a lot of pictures, lots of rubbish mixed in with some gems, not sure how many will make the cut. Thanks for the great organizing, a great event!

Can I download from Photobucket, sorry probably a simple question but I don't know about photo bucket. I don't see my self with a camera very often. I almost look like I know what I'm doing.

Philip,

Thanks amigo. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your shots.

Yes, you can download from photobucket. I've reduced all these to 74 dpi as this is the highest resolution that computer monitors can display. They're still fairly large though. 1-3MB.

Just click on the photo you want, then on the right side you'll see 'Option' and one of these is 'Download'.

That was my first every experience at watching a crit , and it was awesome.
A big Thank you to the club for organising it, and the Trust as well.

It was my first time at trying to take videos too and lots of things to learn ; like iPad was a bad idea due to the sunglare
Anyway, here are 3 very bad videos (you have been warned) retrieved from my helmet camera that wasn't obstructed by the iPad
(don't worry , I'm not giving up my day job )

OK, done at last. Below is a link to all the pictures I've kept from the Rookwood crit. There are a lot of them so if you're interested be prepared to trawl through a few before you find yourself. I still probably missed a lot of you, sorry. Drop box is not an archive so if you find something you like download it for yourself. I will eventually delete this folder to save space. They are all high Rez so if you do want to print them they'll be fine for that. They are all free for personal use. If you use them on Instagram please credit me, @le_masurier . On facebook just my name is fine, Philip Le Masurier. Hope you find something you like. I generally shoot still life, so please excuse any less than pin sharp ones. Consider these the work of an "action" amateur.

Fantastic work Philip!

It was a race I'd rather forget, but you've made it one that was unforgettable.

Thanks so much for your time and effort on behalf of the club.

Great work! Thanks for sharing Philip. For a still life photographer, your action shots are great!
Looking at the pic of me has taught me I need to lower my posture to a more racing position.
Fashion flatlay to bicycle race day, who better to shoot than Mr Le Masurier!

Karzie and Philip have shared their works of art with us.

I have something far less professional, some jelly vision from my el cheapo front cam and some better vision from my Fly6.

Two laps of C Grade.

Nice one Anthony. That Fly6 is surprisingly good. With that view you can't tell how much work one is doing on the front, too. :) Might have to get one! Thanx for that.

Thanks very much Anthony.

I was number 40 so it help show me where all my issues are! Couldnt have asked for better vision if I had planned it.

Was the Fly6 mounted on the bike?

Cheers,
Steve.

Steve, the rear facing cam is on the seat post.
