Hi all,

It's time to get my road bike serviced, but my regular mech monkey (Israel from Bike Brain in Pyrmont) has shut up shop.

Can anyone recommend a good, not too crazily expensive shop/mechanic? I usually get my commuter bike serviced at Glow Worm, who are very nice and reasonably priced, but they don't seem to work so much on road/racing machines.

I have had great results from Felice at Cycling Projects in Ashbury. He has worked on both of my regularly used bikes recently and did excellent work.

I can suggest Atelier de Velo in the city (depending on where you work). Very friendly and their service department is right in the middle of the shop so you can watch what they do.

+1 for Atelier de Velo. There's not much I don't do myself but they fixed my loose headset which was driving me nuts. There's a young English guy who is ex Clarence St Cyclery.

If you use Atelier de Velo, be prepared to pay OTT prices for parts and components. They charged me $150 for an Ultegra cassette. Never again.

Bates Bikes at Kogarah...always good to me.

Only issue is price of parts. I usually source parts and get them to install if needed.

Give great feedback and mechanics are very exp.

If the price of parts is a concern, The Rolling Fix encourage you to BYO parts. And they come to you to do repairs.

Cheeky Velo Randwick.

Velofix @ Rozelle for my road bike. Originally recommended by friends. I am very happy. They changed my 15 year old bottom bracket and crank set from my commuter, took 5 people and 2 metres of leverage to remove, and no extra charge. Would have made a good you tube video.

Cheeky Transport @ Newtown give great advice and service for commuting and practical bikes. Gets people on to bikes. Did a custom disk braze on to my front fork a while back.

Thanks everyone for all the bike mechanic suggestions. I was intrigued by the idea of a mobile service, did some Googling and ending up going with Barry from Bike Boyz, based in Maroubra.

Bad company name, but very good service. It took about 2 hours all up, he just parked outside my place and got to work - it ended up at $129 ($89 basic service + $10 extra labour as I had cassette/chain issues + $25 call-out fee). He gave it a thorough going over and bike feels much smoother, so I'm a happy camper. I'd recommend him.
