So I got my FTP tested the other day at the Athlete Lab. So my FTP is 200w, and I'm still trying to get a handle on exactly what that means.

So if you wanna know a bit more about FTPs and FTP testing, have a look at my blog - http://backoffalls.blogspot.com.au/

Anyone else know their FTP?

Don't know my FTP, however, whilst in Brisbane for work this week I used an exercise bike that output power. Maybe it can be calculated ?

I slowly ramped up the resistance and sat on 230W for the last 5 minutes of the workout. I'm around 75 - 76kg.

Cheers

The FTP test is basically a test is how much wattage you can consistanly maintain over 20 mins. 95% of your average is your FTP

Got a value today via a 30 minute ITT in CP. Pacing was off. FTP 247 w. 3.3 w/kg. just starting a build phase so I'll be disappointed if I don't get 270 plus this year.

Last year when I did Haute Route my FTP was about 195w. 3.1 w/kg (including the bike)

w/kg is important measure. 2 people might have the same FTP, the heavier one will be slower.

W/kg reference is based on one's physical weight, not with the bike. The sad thing about knowing one's peak FTP is that one suddenly realises how far one is from the pros. I found that out 6-7 years ago. Utterly depressing!

PS. Calibration on exercise bikes are generally poor.

FTP is the average watts sustained over an hour. The calculation for 20mins @95% is only an estimate so keep that in mind when using the approximation. Some people can smash 20mins but struggle over the hour, physically and mentally!

As weiyun says, the measurement excludes the bike weight (so that gets your numbers up higher on the graph :) ) but the most important thing is to use your FTP as w/kg to compare with others.

Lose a few kg's = instant improvement, no fancy tests required.

Just make sure the loss wasn‘t in the muscles. Tricky business there. 8)

It is? That seems illogical to me. Anyway if that's the case, then mine was 3.6w/kg ... which makes it appear that I was putting out more watts/kg in July than Andrew is now. And makes me very good not good. Not sure I believe that.

It is. The bike is a sink, not a source, of power.
