Hi Guys,

Not that I ever enter this (and I won't be), but I know it is popular with the DHBC folk so please remember to get in early - entries open at 9am sharp and they are expected to fill up really quick.
DON'T MISS OUT and good luck to those that do get in.

Last year entries ran out in 11 minutes. So be at your PC and keep entering until your successful.

BTW for those who haven't done a road race this is an excellent one to start with

Being one of those who has never raced, how do you go about attempting to enter this. The web site doesn't seem to have any instructions or phone numbers.

Try this now so you are familiar with the process
1. http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/
2. Click Event Entry -> Online Entry
3. Member Entry, enter your surname, race license number and tick remember me
4. Click Next
5. Check the box next to the event. They will be in race date order, if it doesn't appear then its not there yet, so start the process again until it does appear.
6. Click Next
7. Click Continue
8. Enter your credit card details and click Pay Now

Note: the server will be really busy as 200+ will be trying to enter for the 170 places at the same time, you just keep trying until you are in and you don't muck around, once you can see it, you simply enter. Don't worry about doing multiple race entries, you can go back another time if you want to enter other races, only this race has the entry problem, all other races can be entered at your leisure.

Is this a graded event, if so how do I get graded, as I've never raced before?

The entry list looks a bit like a boys race. Only a handful of women racing this year. Didn't see last years winner in the list either.

When I remembered, I half-heartedly made an entry with my phone, while sitting on my bike at the side of the road. Surprisingly, it went straight through – so I am a slightly unintentional entry. I was assuming this burst of luck would (cosmically) affect my handicap and overall performance in the race; however, I was subsequently gently sideswiped by a car on West St, so maybe everything has been evened out.

Mike, this is my second Road Race and I assume my first Handicap. My first road race was the B2B a couple of years ago. Whilst I wasn't the last the finish the fellow in the Lantern Rouge vehicle did need to stop at the driver reviver station as he was so fatigued waiting for the arriere du peloton to roll in.

I am hoping to be given a good couple of hours on the field.

Dougie, technically it's your first race, the b2b although timed is not a race (or so the organisers say)
1st road race. Who do we bribe for a head start?
Start with the club handicapper who I think is either Alex or Christian. Make sure you tell everyone within earshot of club officials how bad your form is nearer to the event so the club handicapper can submit a favourable one, however cnsw makes the final decision based on what the club submits early in the season.

I think the club has already submitted the handicaps to cnsw for the season so online hacking is your best chance of grabbing a better one from cnsw!

Seriously though, unless you are riding fasties every week you will most likely have a very good handicap (ie maximum or thereabouts)

Can your rough Crit race grading be used as an estimate for handicap? what does the club handicapper take into consideration or is there a middle ground that one starts from?

Crits are usually a bad indicator for a road race since crits are only 1/3 length or less of a road race

Unless riders are very strong, usually they start you off in e or f in your first race and move you up or down after that. Experience would count in the assessment as would strength in the waterfall training rides. I'll leave the explanation of the full assessment criteria to those who are involved in the grading though!

Unless its changed, James F does the road handicaps.

Most of the new guys will be on limit or one bunch behind. Perhaps Phillip in the third bunch.

But I'm not the handicapper.

The guys who have done a few races will end up somewhere similar to previous years, in accordance with their state handicap. At a guess I'll be in the mid field bunch with Strawburger, Mark and Chris one bunch in front of me.

BTW, if the handicapper is reading this, I've only done one road training ride this year....

And crits typically have no hills. Ken Dinnerville has some rolling hills and then one big one that's like drop city! Enjoy!

Hey Noel, you might get lucky, but for me they handicap off my crit and track results. my road form is rather rubbish, but they have put me off times later than girls i regularly beat in crits and on the track... if that's all you've raced, they will go off that.

and you can always plead your case after you see the handicaps posted. although, if you plead into s better handicap and win... watch out

The bunches will head out something like 5 minutes apart. Each bunch will do a paceline as they race the other bunches. The trick is to work for your bunch but not wear yourself out.

The key point of this race is the hill, which we climb 3 times. You need to do everything you can not to get dropped on the hill.

If you get dropped at any point, try not to use too much energy riding solo, wait for the next bunch to come by and tack on the back of it.

Consumption wise 2 water bottles will be sufficient. I'll probably use one energy gel per lap, but will carry 4.

From some years back, I recall the remark of a local Illawarra rider in my bunch some 15mins into the race. He tried to motivate everyone to work together and demanded an average speed of 38km/h to stay ahead and win the race. My jaw dropped... It was still fun though.

By the way - this is Jo not Stuart - forgot to login!

This race from what I hear is pretty hard, and you have to work in the bunch to keep the other groups away - no hiding in the back and be prepared to be dropped within your group at some point. I'd say most of the guys that are riding at the bottom end of Middies or even middies will probably be on Limit, but I guess James will be the judge of that. From memory Amy Vesty had a cracker one year and got like 13th or some thing amazing. That was the year a girl won the whole race and that bunch wasn't the limit bunch but were all fairly strong. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL - and the fact that you got in means luck is on your side !! May the force be with you.

Given that being quick on the Internet does not necessarily equate with being fast on the bike, the present registration demand may have inadvertently eliminated some real contenders. It's good for those who got in. Good luck boys and girls! :)

No one needs to panic too much about their handicap, James F and I have already discussed them. Most people will be in the first couple of bunches and Chris will be near the back.

The front bunches often take the victory in this race, so everyone should be able to have a good crack at the win.

I was thinking of doing a recon ride before the event. Not sure of a date yet but the itinerary would be:

Early Train to Dapto
Ride Ken Dinnerville Course
Macquarie Pass
Re-ride Dinnerville Course
Return to Dapto Station

Let me know if anyone is keen and ill try and line up a suitable weekend. Most likely early May.
