Adventure Ride - Easter Fri 3rd April 2015 West Head 5:45am

Posted: 01 Jan 2013, 12:40
by mikesbytes
Welcome to the 2013 DHBC Adventure Rides

This year we have a team putting their heads together and they have come up with some interesting ideas, which we will combine with some of the classic's of past years

Most of these rides, while not quick (C25+) are quite long. Riders must of completed 3 rides to waterfall. If you a new but fairly fit, please contact the ride organiser and discuss. Most of the routes are designed to allow each of us to have fun at our own levels, for example the fast riders will gun it up a big hill and wait at the top for the other riders. In between these 'challenge' sections the group will ride together at the speed comfortable to the slowest rider.

Unless stated otherwise, rides depart Marrickville Rd cafe on Sundays at 6.00am

I'm in for the Earlie Eastie (obviously)

This is probably the perfect ride for anyone who wants to stretch their wings a little having done a couple of Waterfalls. At 70Km-ish it's actually shorter than the Waterfall lap, though there will be a bit more climbing involved.

For anyone unfamiliar with the terrain, there's a few shortish, sharp climbs, but nothing epic. And to reiterate Mike's comments we will regroup at the top of all the climbs, and we'll also stop at least once en route to refill water bottles and the like. And if anyone does find themselves struggling, being in the Eastern Suburbs there's plenty of public transport options on tap and shortcuts galore back to Marrickville Rd Cafe.

Hoping to see a big group on the day

Mike, I was after saturday the 9th/feb not second for the coast one. Will have to check Lindsay can still come as i told him April.
There has been plenty of interest already for this which is good. And it won't matter if its hot as we are going to at least two beaches.

I'm in too... Dougie has been exceptionally generous (Australian of the Year?) as to cover me as Ride Leader so I can do this ride. There is an ocean swim on at Bondi at 10:30am so I will turn off at some point (late in the ride) and double back to Bondi to do the swim. My wonderful mum has agreed to meet me there with my swimming gear.

I'm keen for a change of scenery.

I note that the following adventure ride in Feb (up to 130kms) is on 9th. This is the day before the Johnny Warren which I will probably do too, along with a bunch of other DHBC riders. The selection of 9th feb might mean fewer riders given that the jamberoo ride last year was hot, windy and hard work.

Sorted
The Feb one is now Sunday 3rd. There is now a try the track day on the 9th.
Sorry about any confusion. This is the day and won't change again.

What's the route for the upcoming Early Easties ride? Is it still the same as the one we mapped out back then? Depending on how my recovery goes, may be good for this one.

And a big thanks to Mike for being the ride leader.

Quick ride report - had a crew of around 22. Slowish start picking up a puncture thru Newtown and having the worst possible run of lights possible down George St, but once we got down to the Rocks the view and tempo improved. Quick pic stop @ Lady Macs Chair (plus a strenuous workout with the world's crappiest pump - sorry Adrian) and we piled out to Watsons Bay in good time. Someone suggested we take a pic at the top of the climb out of Watsons, so hence we might look a tad bedraggled in that one. I also doubt the DHBC will get a Xmas card from the people across the road from our photo spot - seems we might have been a little noisy for their taste at 730 on a Sunday. Whoops.

Next top was Bronte beach for a quick coffee break. Fair to say the local coffee emporium didn't prove quite as DHBC friendly as MRC, asking for a $2 surcharge per head. No wonder they were empty. We drank our coffee in the park for zero surcharge. It certainly made us appreciate home turf, but alas, clicking our heels three times didn't take us back, so we remounted and schlepped up the Bronte ankle snapper, then down into Coogee and beyond.

Quick stop at LaPa and we set sail for home. Literally. The king tides had formed a sizable lake at the end of Coward St. I dug the hardcore, moses style, part the water approach some took, but I doubt it did the Ultegra much good. Back to MRC, where the surcharge was zero and the merits of berry smoothie v iced coffee were discussed at length.

Hopefully a good time was had by all, and we stayed dry - hurrah. I think Weiyun will post some of the pics.

Looks like fun!!

The next one is Sunday 3rd Feb

Central Coast Chase

We will ride from turf
Image
to surf
Image

This ride is suitable for everyone as it has three versions. We will all leave together on the 6.45am train from Central. We get off at different stations with different routes that all lead us to The Entrance by 12.30pm for lunch. After lunch we can all meander back along the lakeside bike track to catch the 2.36pm train from Tuggerah that gets us back to Central at 4.10 pm

http://goo.gl/maps/wdjbcMedium 95k group Ourimbah -> Entrance Flat route.
This one is pretty flat and there is plenty of time so bring your swimmers as you should manage to fit in a swim on the way. A good one for those who ride waterfall in the slower groups.

http://goo.gl/maps/5XKeLFast 135k group Wyong -> Entrance Hilly route including Bumble Hill and dog trap rd then Hue Hue to Wyee
This version has a challenging climb as I have heard there are people who are into that kind of thing
It is also longer and will require an average speed of approx 28km/hr to make it in time for lunch. Recommended for those who want to have a crack at Bumble Hill http://www.strava.com/segments/bumble-hill-633814 and know they can do the distance.

http://goo.gl/maps/wno7qBeginner 60k group Wyee -> Entrance
This is the easy one. It is aimed at those who usually just ride slowies. If you have been to slowies you can do this. You don't need a fancy bike or to be super fit. This one is all about having fun.We will avoid major roads and have plenty of stops. Great for new people.

Didn't mean to make it sound too hard.Lunch is at the pub where all groups meet.
30km is only if you want a long lunch,4 beers, 28km will get you a slightly shorter lunch,2 beers. All refreshment stops will be marked on the map i will provide as well as a few handy shortcuts in case of delays. I have ordered a sun visor to go on my helmet so will be very dorktastic! but still cooler than a triathlete:)

i can totally ride slow. plus i'll be with Sinead who has never been 65km before.

and for all the vintage bike nerds, Sinead will be on a Jim Bundy, with both Columbus and Reynolds tubing and an Italian threaded BB! built with a bit of this and a bit of that, with a miss match of gear components to match. bright orange. it's a real joy

Cool,we are getting a nice group. So it's the 6.45 from central. Will leave from upstairs platform between 6-12. Will say Wyong. Some people will meet at the cafe at 6 to ride there or just make your own way to central.Leave plenty of time to get tickets and stuff. The next stop is strathfield at 6.58 am. John is getting on there so that's an option for those less inner and more westie

Sorry (especially to Anthony), but I'm out. Double booked. I'm going time trialling at Calga instead. I thought the TT was on Saturday so mistakenly thought I'd be able to do both. Enjoy!

I'm tempted to put my hand up for the 135. Having ridden to somersby and mangrove mountain a few times last year im keen to check out bumble hill and the yarramalong valley on the bike. Gorgeous country.

I'll decide tonight and then apply for a leave pass if I decide I want to give it a whirl. A little bit hesitant due to lack of kms this month with three weeks of eating brazillian BBQ instead of riding a bicycle.

Yes, come!!
I can easily trim some distance while keeping in yarramalong and bumble hill if that helps. Can take out 20-30km here and there if needed.

Great day!!

Thank You scully for organising it.!!

Our group of 7, on the 90km had x3 punctured. One beauty or a large nail in and out. (oh and if stop on side of rural road changing a puncture, if you see bike sadle in the bush, caution as a baby Brown snake might be under it. More concerning was where was mama.

Good ride, thanks John for being our gps. Was challenging at times, ok hard in the last quarter of ride with undulating Hills and the bloody head winds!!. We regrouped at a pub in Entrance for lunch and drinks

Unfortunatly one of our guys Jacob had an incident on ride back to train, hopefully the wrist/hand/thumb does not have serious damage. Mend up fast.

Pics of day will follow from others hopefully, and other tales of the day.
Cheers

Thanks everyone who came and made it a fun day. We ended up having 15 people in two groups and great weather.
The 65km group started from Wyee. Our first stop was Chain Valley Bay South where we saw some jumping fish and noticed how much rain the area had had.Next was a sneaky bike track with a cool bridge followed by a short dirt section. Soon we entered munmorah recreation area. There were a few little hills that I may have forgotten the steepness of when describing the ride, but everyone was very helpfull in pointing it out. It was worth it as the water was great for swimming. There was a very refreshing breeze on the way to The Entrance. This had slowed us down a bit but the other group had multiple punctures so we weren't far behind. Lunch was good.We swapped stories then took the bike track around the lake. There were quite a few puddles to ride through and various waterbirds to be seen. Jacob had an altercation with a bridge and I think the bridge won. I hope it's not too bad, but looked painfull. We made it to the station were reinited will Bill who we had abandoned at the shop, sorry dude.
There were a few naps to be had on the train and then we were home.
things I learnt- put sunscreen on legs, not just face and arms
take housekey

We went to RPAH Cas, but it was too difficult a job for a Sunday night. He has a displaced fracture of the 4th metacarpal.
Jake went back this morning and was to decide whether he wanted it pinned (i.e. an operation) or splinted. Last I spoke, he was thinking splint.

things I learnt:

1. Inner tubes can balloon and puncture thru surprisingly small holes in a tyre.
2. Don't put used co2 pumps in your back pocket till they've warmed up
3. Hills can sometimes appear much steeper, longer and more frequent than they have been described.
4. Our club has some great people in it.

Had a great out, Thanks Dana! It was enjoyable riding along looking at the lovely scenery. Particularly enjoyed the beer and watching Lindsay go through the deeper puddles with legs spread. Thanks to John and Bill for the train company when crazy came to visit.
Excellent day out, looking forward to the next one already!

It was an excellent day out in good company. Pia and Lencia did a sterling job into the 40-50 kph headwind heading in to The Entrance (I spent a fair bit of time drafting at this point :) ) My best wishes to Jacob. It was amazing to think he was able to ride back to the station with a fractured finger. Those Carswells must be made of stern stuff.

Thanks Dayna for organising it. Just as well we got lost and cut off some of the route, with 4 punctures total and the howling headwind we needed to reduce the kms a bit. Anyway, here's the crew at Lakes Beach:

Oaks Fire Trail MTB ride
Catch the train at Central Station 5.48am Sun 10th Mar
- ride organiser: Christian L
- cycle coach: Christian L, Mike C

Technically the Adventure Ride thread should be moved to the MTB forum but lets not get boring technicalities in the way of having fun. This ride is off road and requires a MTB to complete. We catch the train to the Blue Mountains and return via train from another station. Christian our resident MTBer will fill in on the details.

So who's in;
Christian
Mike C (assuming Christian sells him a MTB)

Unfortunately I'm ride leader so can't make this one (note my sigh of relief)... But I do have a Medium size mountain bike if anyone would like to borrow it. It's an Avanti Barracuda and is slightly too big for me to give you an indication of size.

As I've been talked into this, I'll give you the run down on what to expect.

The Oaks fire trail runs from Woodford to Glennbrook in the Blue mountains. Its approximately 25km and I'd call it mostly down hill. Now my definition of down hill may be different to yours but it does start further up the mountain, so it must be down hill, right? The first half is undulating fire trail with a couple of steepish descents and climbs to remind you that you are on a bike. From the halfway point its about 8km downhill on a fire trail, then for the fun part. There is about 5km of single track, which if you are feeling game, you can do quite fast. Then to finish it all off there is everyones favourite part, a nice steep climb up a sealed road, and by steep, I mean steep.

To top it off, there is a bakery in Glennbrook and no mountain bike ride is complete without a pie and an ice coffee milk.

Now before someone mentions that 25km off road is equivalent to 50km on road, no its not, it's 25km.

The plan is for most to meet at Central and catch the 5.48am train, but when I look there is no such train, Mike, may want to check this one. I'll meet you at Glennbrook station and jump on the train there as I'll be driving.

Out of interest (well, more than just interest), does it have to be such an early start? One of the main attractions of off road is the later starts...

I also have a spare mountain bike (medium) that someone can borrow.

I vote for 7:18 :-) And I will also drive to the end point station (Glenbrook) and get the train there. I will have room for one other person.

For the newbies, this says you should have MTB experience. http://www.trailflix.com.au/tfx_new/tra ... =trailinfo Does riding one to the shops count?
