Fyi: Geoff Martin and myself are planning to head down to Nowra/Jervis Bay on the weekend of 21/22 July to participate in this handicap road race. The details are at:
http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/cy_nsw/ra ... /12112.htm
There is also a NSW Club Team Time Trial Championships on the day before (Saturday). I believe Mark Lacey, Craig Weller, and Michael Clemet, and Eugene Shilter will be entering a team.
http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/cy_nsw/ra ... /12110.htm
If there are enough people interested in putting together another team, I'd be keen to ride in the clubs team time trial (just for fun!).
If your interested in participating in either race, please let us know. It would also be good to know if you're planning to stay down their on the Friday or Saturday night. Geoff Martin has all the details for good caravan park nearby so it should be a fun weekend.

Adrian
A few of us in the DHBC 'Valley Wheeler' group plan to enter 2 teams (riding vintage steel bikes only).
We are only doing the TT on Saturday, unless there is a change in plans.

Cool. Let me know what your thinking. I think Geoff M will be up for it so we'd just need one other rider. i don't have a TT bike or bars but would enjoy having a go.

Do you need to have TT bars to participate, or can just ride normal road bike?

Can you also just participate or need to be serious about TT ?

Time trial route is on Bikely. Reasonably flat with less than 400m climbing and only 35km.

The answer to your question Bill can be summed up in four words- "Valley Wheelers with moustaches".

However, you do need a team of four riders to compete. There is a spare spot in one of the Wheelers teams, but we've offered it to Adam. Now we just have to find him a bike.

Adrian, as the official club organiser for this event you can put me down for a team on Saturday and accommodation for the weekend.

Cheers

My appearance on the start list was shortlived - I'm out. Unfortunately for the TTT the wife has me booked in for a weekend down in Canberra so i'll be packing the 12-27 cassette rather than the 11-23.

That's a nice ride from Nowra to Sassafras. Thru Norton State Park. I used to go rallying there back in the 70's when it was dirt.

Note that there will also be a women's TTT team competing on the Sat. I'm driving the DHBC team support car, complete with flashing light and spare wheels :-)

I won't be doing the handicap thingo though - not sure about the others.

Bill, I'm keen yet like Strawburger I need to check with my wife for a leave pass. Also I'm likely to monopolise the car for the weekend.

I'll know closer to the date.

Where is the caravan park located?

Masters race report

Left with the second bunch, out of 4. Surprisingly the pace was hot. Something like 5k out, lost Mark. 8.5k Eleri turned up from the limit bunch, tacked on and stayed for a while. 15k Geoff M turned up, but the bunch was climbing, I'm sure not what Geoff wanted. So that left me, the final DHBC rider.

20k out and my hands were so cold, that the left hand wasn't operating the brake correctly, so I rolled off the back and kept myself safe, still in touch with the bunch.

30k out the pace softened, probably to what it should of been, I was amazed how many of our bunch were still there. Then there was a pile up of about 6 riders directly in front of me, I was forced to swap to the other side of the ride, with riders from the elite race coming directly towards me, I quickly ducked back in.

The big hill saw a lot of riders under stress and my bunch pretty much split in 2, I was in the first half. Then I saw the remains of limit go the other way, it was obvious why Eleri and Geoff had been victims, their bunch must of hammered it. I took a speedo reading, then only 800mtrs we reached the turnaround, so they were only 1.6k in front of us.

We caught them pretty quickly and then came the big down hill, our numbers had swelled as many of the riders previously dropped had tacked back on, it was raining and the corners were sharp, the riders around me were really cautious and this resulted in a split, with about 12 riders off the front, while 8 of us chased. They didn't get any further away from us, but we weren't gaining on them either.

Then we got caught by about 12 riders, a mix of scratch and block. I jumped on, as did most of us. The pace was really hot, but they punched a big hole thru the wind, so it was manageable. Strongest of all was the Drapac Porsche rider, who could go to the front at will and push the pace. I spent a fair bit time following him.

The sucked us up to the lead bunch and then they killed the pace, as they thought they were on the front.... wrong.

As we went down the hill to the Airport, we spotted a car ahead with flashing lights.... that's interesting, then we saw the reason, there was a rider behind it. Suddenly the pace was opened up again and we screamed towards the turnaround. At the turnaround we had cut the gap to the solo rider to 50mtrs, you should of seen the expression on his face.

Around the turnaround the pack split up, I went around a number of riders and tried to ride across the gap to the front group, but the headwind repelled me and I ended up fighting off the riders around me to finish, say 30mtrs behind the winner. Roland was perhaps 10 metres in front of me and I though, I might of made the M5+ podium, but alas I didn't.

Haven't got proper data yet, but I think my average speed was around the same as what I did in Saturday's 40k TTT

Well, um. One could put a positive spin on this race and claim to be 2nd Masters woman over the line.

However, there were 2 of us and I came last in the whole race. Cold (min 4 degrees according to my garmin), raining so hard it was stinging our faces at times and got dropped off limit group before we'd even hit the 2km mark! Just too fast for me. But at least I finished (sort of), thanks to a tow from Mark Lacey who caught me about 20km in or something.

But a chap who was following us in one of the race cars felt sorry for us and gave us a couple of boxes of Dextro energy gels. And quite nice they were too. Nothing much else to say.

Well, that hurt. I got dropped at 15km from the start and soloed the remainding 75kms . I still put in a maximum effort for the remainder of the race. Even if I wasn't going to be competitive, I wanted to get the most out of this race as training.

Lessons learnt: don't ride in the elites race if you don't have to (I'm a masters 1). Droping your sunglasses out of your rear pocket will probably slow you down considerably.

Positive spin: I was the first DHBC Elite rider home... (I was the only DHBC elite rider )
